absolute toughest pets?
Bots
Thugs probably has higher DEF though
"Taken by itself" is probably not very useful. It's all about synergy between primary and secondary. But if you just want to know the pets' inherent resistance/defense numbers, you can check them all here.

That is an interesting summarization of resistances that pets have. It doesn't show the attack types that each set of pets is vulnerable to. For instance, the vaunted robots are weak against smashing attacks. The family melee smashing attack is resisted well by thugs, but not robots, and consiglieres can wreak havoc AoE style on the Bots. Against carnies, the bots giggle about the illusionists psionic attacks and sleeps, but are susceptible to the strong man hammer attacks.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
On paper bots are the most toughest, with their defense (slotted) and heal they can survive quite some time. Thugs are close runner up, they have also a huge chunk of defense but less softcontrol and no heal.
Although i must say Necro is pretty solid also, with their selfheal, Lich fear and graveknight knockup, they are a nice bunch of zombies.
Demons i put between bots/thugs and necro, decent softcontrol, heal and shield are pretty solid.
Then Ninja, mainly due fire rain from Oni and the KB/KU from the pets, because outside that.. they are squishy. If Jonin however uses calltrops correcty, they get a huge chunck of softcontrol added.
At the bottom i put Mercs. Softcontrol is too short, too long recharge, they get rooted too often with their powers, medic is a plain joke. The only advantage they have, they are ranged.

On paper (if RedTomax is to be believed...) Demons by far have the most resist, even before factoring in Ember Shield or Abyssal Reconstruction: no comparison. Not to mention they can slot Recharge Intensive Pet procs
Below them I'd (maybe) put Necromancy: they have alot of exotic damage resist, fears, self heals, KDs, and -ToHit (which is equal to +def), but they are missing s/l resist, which is most common. Also can take RIP procs
*Then* I'd put the all-favored bots: they have average resist, plus +def from Protector Bots. Cannot take RIP procs
Pair any of these w/ /thermal and as many def/res procs as you can slot and your pets should be indestructible.
Do different sets get different HPs?
Wondering which set taken by itself is the 'toughest', most hp, most resists/def, and powers that mitigate damage (outside of heals which are easy to quantify even for a noob like myself).
