Gun Arms?

I've been thinking about this idea a very long time, as far back as Issue 1 when I made my main, a assault rifle/devices blaster. People probably won't like it, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

Sets like assault rifle, dual pistols and beam rifle don't have alternate animations, just different weapon models. So, why not make the alternate animation to be weaponless? Have the attacks come from the hands and wrists.

By making it an alternate animation, the people that love having the weapon out wouldn't lose a thing, as it would be a choice. Quite a few of the current animations in game could easily be recycled for this, except I'd guess pistols would need new animations from scratch.

As a long time fan of "power armor" type characters, this would be really great. I have always pictured my main character with gun arms. Bet some armored people out there would love beam arms and such also.

Just something I'd love to see, I doubt it's doable, but I'd actually buy and spend points on top of my subscription to get something like this.

Personally, I've wanted the arm cannon seen on the Warwork on the banner since the 1st time I saw it.

Currently I'm making a Clockwork rogue and kept going back and forth on powersets. I wanted to be a blaster but all the sets that would work, I already have toons with. I don't like repeating sets. So I relented and decided to make him an Electric scrapper instead. If I could have Beam Rifle, coming from a wrist cannon or such!

Not sure how much work that would be though, see also: SCR.

I've been dreaming up a Mech Epic AT, kind of a mesh of Kheldians and VEATs, with a human form (pilot of mech) The MechSuit then either deciding to go Melee power mode or Ranged assault mode. Only issue I see would be the sudden emergence of numerous giant HVAS sized players...

Otherwise most of the animations and rigs are already ingame and would only need minor tweaking. Also size issues in caves etc.

The problem with swapping weapon sets to use non-weapon attacks and non-weapon sets to shoot out of weapons is activation sequences, which last I heard were hard-coded per power and VERY specific and exacting. Right now, there is no precedent in this game to so much as suggest that this is possible, and wile I'm sure new tech could bring down the stars from the night sky, I suspect this is one of the BIGGEST projects the art team could undertake.

Activation sequences seem to have become notoriously difficult to work around, and they keep throwing up unexpected results. BABs once described it as "If the engine wants to use an animation called 'swipe' but doesn't find it for this activation sequence, it may well activate an animation called 'petrol bomb' because it had a PE in it." I'm not sure how accurate this is and how well I remember it, but that's a pretty big obstacle, considering activation sequences ensure that we actually HOLD our swords, instead of waving around an open arm with a sword stuck to our palm via magic glue, and I've no reason to believe that anyone has ever even seriously considered swapping power activation sequences on the fly.

All of that said... Yeah, I'd like that. Greatly. Of course, I'd like for there to be actual GUNS on those gun arms, such as the way MegaMan's arm transforms into an arm cannon. What this means is new geometry and new props, but these should be much simpler to make as compared to swapping weapon models.

Yeah I agree with it being a lot of work to make something like this happen. Just had the idea rolling around in my head a long time and had to get it out there. I knew activation times and such would be a nightmare to get exact.

With the amount of work it would take to make this idea feasible, I'd guess they would be better off making an entirely new set.

I would be pretty happy with even a new powerset doing this. But I don't know how possible that would be, since it may involve changing the character model.

Anorexic Christian society would be all over this...

ontopically,

One of my favourite bugs / exploits to this game was that certain colour combination that rendered body parts invisible.

Using that to turn gloves into stumps and combining with energy blast was an awesome, ghetto way of doing this.

The same way things like Stone Fists work - just a larger, oversized model that fits over your existing glove. Sure, it might clip with bigger gloves, but if that bothers you, then don't use bigger gloves

Doesn't bother me, but the art people here seem to have the idea that anything that could clip is very bad and shouldn't be in the game. Letting use have the pieces to use, either accepting the clipping or not as we choose, does not seem to be in their mindset.

You can always do the "BABs shield thing" - scale the gun arms up when the player uses larger gloves so they still fit over them, the same way shields become farther offset from the arm as you use bigger gloves.
