if i bought this pc

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-x...52257-pdt.html

would i be able to run CoX on recommended settings without crashes?

or do i need to get better specs etc?

Or would any of the below PCs run on recommended also?

Even easier questions... how much cash have you got available to spend, and have you ever put a computer system together, and would you feel comfortable doing so?

Okay, the Acer system looks a bit...low end for the price you're paying. And from the image given, it's a slimline case. Likely that means integrated graphics. nVidia graphics, but still integrated. So while it'll probably run CoH, it's not going to do it at Ultra settings or high framerates.

Pretty much any of the systems you see at CyberPower will run CoH fine. Don't simply take the default box though. Most of the base models are sporting bottom-run video cards. Unless you're planning to put a beefier card in yourself.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Please don't go to PC World.
If you're from the UK (Union is your home so I'm guessing you are), you should try webites like scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk
Do you currently have a PC that you could salvage parts from?
If so, then overcockers do some very good bundles (CPU, MB and RAM). For £400 you could get a very good pc put together if you already had the peripherals (screen, mouse, keyboard etc).
Building is pretty easy, the hardest part is picking the components you want (so much choice)

Im starting from scratch, I have a rubbishy laptop that just about run coh on minimum with that .textcombine thingy you put into the NCSoft Launcher

I have a mouse lol thats about it

Can't say I'm familiar with cyberpower. The system builder looked a bit messy
As much as it pains me, you'll probably be better off with getting a pre-built as it'll include the monitor, keyboard and an operating system.
The PC World machine is pretty old, so it's not going to have much of a shelf life.
What else would you use it for? Any other games etc?

I would go with what Hyperstrike said, as in "choose one of the systems and then start knocking components off/downgrading them" to save money.

You dont *need* liquid cooling, so you can save £23 just by choosing the stock fan option...

The one thing you will have to remember with the CyberPower stuff... you have to pay extra for a monitor and your operating system on top (so add roughly £160 to the price)

Depending on wich CPU you pick, i wouldnt recommend the stock cooler that comes with the CPU. Unless you dont mind a 'high pitch fan sound', any decent silent cooler (like the Vortex) is pretty much the same price as the liquid cooling set.

What current hardware do you own that can be re-used again?

50)Sinergy X/(50)Mika.
(50)MaceX/(50)Encore

Sign the petition, dont let CoH go down! SIGN!

wow this is confusing....maybe ill go ask tech people at uni as reading it is quite hard to pick up what you guys are on about (sorry my bad)

Ask the Computer Engineers rather than the Computer Scientists (personal bias ) - most of them will work for Beer & Pizza.

If you're not comfortable building your own PC then it's probably best not to attempt it without help, but I would strongly recommend reading up on general specs so you know what you're after when looking at pre-built machines. Almost every one will have a couple of components that aren't really want you need.

Right well i dont want a mega machine, as i said before it only has to play CoH on recommended to make me happy as larry so this leads me onto....

....what specs are necessary to achieve recommended settings?

the current laptop im on (family laptop, cant take it with me ) can run on recommended and has:

- AMD Phenom II X4 Mobile Processor N930 (2 GHz)
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
- 4GB DDR3 Memory
- 320 GB HDD

How do i go about achieving these sort of specs but in desktop form?

Well the drive size is fine (dependent on what you need to store, obviously) and 4Gb is sufficient (make sure you're running a 64-bit OS) though if you can afford it 6 or 8 would be better (again, 64-bit only).

Graphics card-wise, nvidia is your best bet for this game as ATI still has some issues and you're probably looking at something like the GTX 460 1Gb.

CPU-wise a core i5 would probably be a good choice, or a high-end i3 if you're on more of a budget, but you don't want a Core2 as they're much very last-gen.

Right ill have a look online and see what i can find, if i wanted to build my own what is the best way to go about it?

Read reviews on sites like TomsHardware, Anandtech, Hexus, etc. Most of them will do "Best Component for $x" articles so you can tailor what you want to your budget. The more you have to spend the better your PC will be, but you can still make a pretty decent one for £300-£400.

Read a couple of articles on building your own PC, again the sites above may help, as will Google. As a base you need: A case, a power supply, a motherboard, a CPU, some RAM, a graphics card and a hard drive. If you don't have keyboard/mouse/monitor/Windows license then you'll need them as well.

Once you know what you want, go shopping; dabs.com, scan.co.uk, overclockers.co.uk & ebuyer.com are all good choices. Don't feel you have to buy everything from one place, you may find it's cheaper to buy some stuff from one place and some from another (pay attention to P&P costs though).

The graphics on that Acer is the really old nVidia 6150SE integrated (nForce 430 motherboard chipset).

Not nice at all.
