Windows "8", me, and Co* on it.

Hover over the "start flag" at the bottom left, click Settings, then in the panel that pops up click "Power" and you'll get the option to shut down or restart from there.

I have it installed on my living room computer and so far it has provided lots of entertainment -- every time a friend comes over, I tell them "hey, a beta of Windows 8 is out, check it out" and then dump them on Metro. Watching their faces while they try to figure out what happened to Windows is hilarious.

I forget what it the exact name for this was, but I did some digging into the core changes into the Windows 8 boot process. It seems that they're trying to build a system that prevents boot viruses amongst other things....

EDIT: found a link similar to what I read on it:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/desktop-...ears-40094017/

That said, the OS allows for NATIVE ISO and VHD loading! They've successfully integrated virtualization into the OS. And it only took them How long to copy this Mac feature?

Yes, prevent boot viruses and Linux.

Well Microsoft may think of Linux as a boot virus.

MS already stated, you can dual boot to Linux.

A point of the article that the post before mine linked too was it's in the hardware manufacturers hands. Now when was the last time you saw a DIYer friendly BIOS in your basic Home PC from a store? And since I'm guessing 95% of the owners of those machines will never install a new OS on the computer, even a Microsoft one, what motivation do PC manufacturers have to include the option to bypass the secure OS check?

Ok, I actually laughed out loud at this! I can see it, and the tilted confused dog look comes to mind. Heh.

Bill, I wasn't tryin' to dual boot. Although, it *was* interesting that on an older drive with a Win2k on it, W8P wanted to actually upgrade it. As if I'm gonna do that. I only do fresh installs these days, and only single boots. Not interested in supporting dual boots, hence, spare drive installs. Messier mechanically, if you will, but cleaner logically, and I prefer it that way.

---

I did manage to get the 32bit W8P on a P4 2.40GHz 1G machine... and to my disappointment, this OS is slower than Win7 on it. By a lot. But it does work... And after about 5 minutes, I did the registry thing to kill Metro. A restart helps.

But the oddest thing is that Win7 WILL NOT do Aero on this machine, because it's not got a good enough 'card' on the motherboard, what with it being an 82845G chipset. But W8P? Aero *can't be turned off completely*. The 'peek' function works, the transparencies work, all that. You can turn off some of it, but some of it won't ever go away.

Odd. o.0

It's sluggish. I'm wondering if the thing being forced to do Aero funcitons in some way is part of the problem. It's not unusable, but I don't think I'll bother using W8P for upgrades unless it improves on these machines. Which is odd as well, I would have thought the slimmer, trimmer OS wouldn't be as much of a burden. Literally 'out of the box' installs, before any tweaks, Win7 beats W8P on a single core P4 box. If it's a 'go to W8 or else' situation, there will have to be new boxes. Ah well. Time catches up to us all...

Very very interesting results. I'm still looking at it, will do some more tomorrow... throwing programs at it. Found a couple that already are gonna need work to run from the makers... or tweaks in the compatiblity settings... or permissions... or outright replacement of the product. Sigh...

Oh, in case anyone doesn't know this... Microsoft Defender, which comes standard, is also equipped with the antivirus portion of Security Essentials... effectively, Microsoft is sending W8 with Antivirus and Antimalware. You can't get Outlook Express anymore, or Windows Mail, due to competition issues, but you CAN get AV and AM with your OS now... bet that doesn't last. And honestly, I'm not terribly sure that you want a single source AV product... seems a really good way to ensure success at breaking it and getting in the computer... but maybe I'm paranoid... the OS itself, as well as common programming languages, is that sort of a problem, as we well know... I'm looking at you, Flash Ad Banners.

This is more a Work issue. When I found I could upgrade the P4s with Win7 and they work fine, that was a good thing (tm). But the early results are... Win8 isn't gonna happen.

Which will be really pitiful if Microsoft pulls a 'no more Win7, folks'. Maybe there will be a Win8 Business that acts like Win7/Vista/XP for that purpose... Metro isn't made for the professional world, IMO.

My home one, well, I'm not really messing with it much at the moment. All my stuff is on my Vista disk, and I've not transferred it. Co* ran like a dream, despite Metro and it's weirdness, which is all I wanted to know. Although, I haven't printed anything, nor burned a CD yet... might oughtta try those...

More to come... and y'all keep it up too! Good info goin' on here.

So they are calling the phone/tablet interface metro...

That really should be an option to load that as the shell or explorer. or even better make it function like media center does in windows 7...which I have load as the shell on my media pc >.>

Downloading the dev preview now and I'll load it on a virtual machine

I thought Aero was an interesting name for the visual interface, but Metro just makes my mind jump to the image of an emotionally confused man...

Today's info from me is a short version.. not much happened. Power is out at house (I'm at another one on my cell phone as a hotspot... 3g sucks. ), and it went out at work too when I was playing with that W8P experi-box.

---

I'm getting used to the whole interface now. Even the little bit I was able to play with it today, the interface is... well... nice.

o.0

I actually GET it. It's stupidly simple. Which might be handy. I'm not really cool with the fourth pane of Desktop icons, but... I can drag those about, plonk them where I want among the tiles...

Goofy thing switches to desktop then opens the program. A little odd, but ok.

I *really* don't see the point of two IEs on the machine, 9 for the desktop, and 10 for the metro. But you can 'desktop' IE10, but I didn't get to where I could see if that means the desktop IE icon would run 9 or 10 if you set 10 that way... In any case, MS needs to pick one and go with it, and be done with it.

Downloaded a cute litte program that requires Net 3.51, but allows you to switch between the Metro/non-Metro setting. You can do it with a registry, but the program is easier. Have to restart W8 to activate the change.

Likin' the left side previous window thingy. Nice.

Likin' the right click in IE10 to bring up other IE10 windows.

Likin' the Windows Button takes you to Metro, and then you flick about to the desktop or whatever.

Like I said... I am actually liking Metro now.. it's easy to deal with in many respects. The dumbing down of the interface could actually be handy... and the idea of this being prevalent in phones, tablets, TVs, whatever, so it's all similar and you can expect a similar interface in them all? Kinda interesting. I see their point...

But still think as a pro interface, it's stupid. Too many 'tricks' to deal with things. That would be turned off as default, and clones made from that...

Ooh. I need to Ghost one to se if I can... Ghost 15 is weird, but works on Win7... Yeah, yeah, I know, other programs... I tried those, but me and they didn't exactly work right for some reason. I gave in.

One other thing: we use VNC to remote desktop inside our network. Long story short: It works for two reasons we need it to. We use RDP for outside sessions to a couple of central servers, then VNC into the workstations from those. Eh, it works.

Anyway, RealVNC? Not on W8. TightVNC (my fav flavor) Nope. UltraVNC (not my fav, but...) Yep, we have a winner. I don't know why, but the other two won't work/install. UltraVNC does. And it works with the Metro, no problem.

In case anyone was wonderin' about that. Use UltraVNC, and it'll work.

Then the power went out as I was installing old school programs we need... so there'll be more later.

Righto, off to bed. g'night all.

Question for you once you wake up.

We use TightVNC as well on our network and I keep a TightVNC Viewer app on my flash drive so that I can remote from whatever computer I'm working on to my own desktop.

Have you tried the TightVNC Viewer app to see if it will work?

I tried it on my VM, and it worked...
It wasn't pretty. During installation (GNU version, if that matters) about five "Access Denied (Error code 5)" windows popped up, so something isn't working right.
But it did install, and I was able to use it to connect to one of my Linux boxes.

Haven't checked the reverse, or on anything with serious security.

Apparently you and I are talking about two different things.

It's a standalone app that requires no installation.

Quite possible.

I used this. It was the first thing in a Google search.

In the Download table on this page, it is the third download in the Windows section. It's labeled "Viewer executable, does not require installation".

Since it run on XP, Vista and 7 and allows me to connect with any of those three no matter which version of TightVNC they are running, I just keep using this older viewer for the small size and portability.

The version you use works just fine.

Same as my previous post, just without the installing commentary.

It could connect to my Linux box, but that is on a local network with only a password required. So anything more secure might show hiccups that my test can't.

I only use it on our local domain network and only using a password.

Sounds like that will at least still work.

Well, at least until we see how much (or little) the underlying Windows 7 desktop is changed.
