I am at my wits end and may murder my video card tonight.

So, CoX keeps freezing up for me when I am around a few other players, even if I put my graphics settings on "City of Stickmen". This is a new issue for me, that started around mid-August. I am tempted to blame my Radeon HD 5700 videa card, but I don't want to run out and drop $150 for nothing. I've tried reinstalling drivers (the last attempt actually made it worse) and CoH, but neither has helped. I thought maybe something was overheating, but CoX has even froze up for me within a couple minutes of switching on the machine, immediately logging in and porting to Pocket D.

Any thoughts? I'm hoping this is a software issue, so I can spend that big wad of cash buying up every last thing on Paragon Market that I don't have yet.

Head over to the Technical Forums and post this there. The people there are friendly and more able to help you out. Usually they ask for some info/computer specs to help with the diagnosing; there is a stickied thread there with instructions on what info to provide.

Hope you get the help you need!

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

If you're on a Radeon 5700 card, try the 11.4 or 11.5 drivers (with 11.4 generally thought to be the best). Anything later than that causes lock-ups similar to those you describe, or even outright crashes, on my machine.

Here's a link to the 11.4 drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

Thanks you two. I'll try both ideas.

There are a couple of known issues with the AMD driver set introduced in the 11.5 driver.

Drop back to the 11.4 driver and things should work fine.

just want to echo the others and say go back to the 11.4 drivers

The 11.4 worked great. The only issue is that Ice Patch "blinks" some when I put it on non-flat surfaces. But... I'll take it.

Thanks people.

I had issues with "pigg crashes" on my GeForce 9600 GSO and the solution, like yours, was to downgrade the drivers. I also turned off FSAA and Ambient Occlusion and don't miss them, and it ups my FPS, under load, in theory.

AO is a framerate killer even with a high end card. It's the first thing I recommend people turn off when asked.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Update:

11.4 wasn't the cure-all that I'd hoped for. While other games ran just fine, CoH would inevitably crash my computer with a black screen and endless accessing of the hard drive until I rebooted manually. Frustrating to say the least (not to mention that half of Justice must want my head by now for bailing on iTrials and TFs unannounced).

But, after reading TJ's advice about Ambient Occlusion (whatever the heck it is), I turned it off and I was able to happily solo for about an hour before sleep with no incidents. I'm going to try to get into a group and see how it goes.

Yep, same crash again. It just took a little longer.

New video card time?

Try using the /unloadgfx command from time to time as you play. If that makes a difference then the issue is memory.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

Post a CoH Helper report. That will let us see the rest of the graphics settings. We might be able to suggest other graphics tweaks that will help.

Instructions for downloading, running and posting the CoH Helper report (as well as HiJackThis) are in Hyperstike's excellent [Guide] Asking for technical help on the forum thread that is stickied in the Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bugs forum section.

Actually, any driver set from 11.7 onward should be stable (on 32-bit Windows, at least). Unfortunately, without completely getting rid of any previous problematic driver sets, issues will continue even with the stable drivers installed.

Thanks for the heads up! I was really getting tired of computer going to PANCAKE every 30 minutes of CoH.

You didn't specify the card type in your initial note but if you have an ATI/AMD card, look for software release 11.3, it's the only stable release that works with CoX, all other versions cause random GPFs including 11.8.

I should have mentioned my Radeon HD 5700 card, yeah.

I got the 11.9 last night and managed to play a bit, but I didn't join any teams. I did go full Ultramode though, and it was running rather well. More updates as events unfold.
