"LFG" vs Global Channels
"LFG" is a recent addition.
The global channels you find so elitist were established over the course of the past few years.
All servers have at least one, sometimes more.
The requirement for a moderator to unsilence you on a channel is to prevent RMT accounts from joining and then spamming.
Not only are global channels global, but they can be added to one of the chat tabs no matter which server the character is on. I have the Infinity channels on chat tabs for my characters on Infinity, Triumph, Union, Guardian, etc. The LFG channel is server-specific, so I have no way of knowing what might be happening on another server should I care to switch.
I'm sorry you find them so evil, I have found them very useful. They are an altoholic's best chat friend.

The "allowed by one of our moderators to chat in it" part is to discourage trolls. It was a huge problem for a while in several global channels. Although a large number of the LFG globals are not silenced on join.

Aha. So basically it's a legacy issue. People haven't left them yet, despite a new tool?
A community version of "Technical debt" I suppose?

Well, as was just mentioned above, they also have greater functionality than the new LFG channel since they can be monitored even while playing on another server. So while the relatively new LFG channels might eventually gather momentum, I very much doubt many people will leave the old global channels anytime soon since they remain superior in some respects.
As it is not a binary proposition, I imagine people will continue to make use of the globals even if they do begin to use the LFG chat more.

Playing an alt on virtue, but want to get in on that Mothership/Hami raid that just started on Triumph where your mains are? Or perhaps you want in on those raids but were on Freedom because lol-pvp-on-any-other-server. Global channels can let you know about them while you are off in RP/PVP-land
LFG-chat will fail you in this regard. However, I do support those forming teams to advertise in both lfg and Global channels. Also, global channel have the additional benefit of being moderated - anyone gets too spamy or flippant, and the mods can cut the annoyance off at the root.

The good news is that free players will not have access to them, so this may encourage some vets to come out of their hidey holes and communicate out in the open.
Wouldn't that be nice? To have communication going on where everyone can actually see it?

Pinnacle is cliquey? With the exception of a very small handful of people (and I'm reasonably sure you're not one of them), anyone can join and chat in its biggest channel (it's only silence-upon-join because of those few people, as long as you're not one of them an op will unsilence you). And no, it doesn't have anything to do with RMT spammers. Just a couple rotten eggs who had to spoil things for everyone else.
Anyway, people don't use LFG because 1) it's new and 2) it's useless.
EDIT: Wait, there's an LFG channel??? Maybe nobody uses it because nobody knows it exists. I thought it was just the tab thing that you use for trials.

But it seems to be system only. No player messages.
I tried it on beta. You get messages relating the queue, but that's it. If you tried to join all trials at a level less that 50, for example, it tells you there are some queues you don't qualify for.

Oh well. It sounds like it ought to be a 'team building' version of the Help channel.

I'm a long-time opponent of global channels, as I feel they divided the community and make the game look deserted to those not in the know about them.
The good news is that free players will not have access to them, so this may encourage some vets to come out of their hidey holes and communicate out in the open. Wouldn't that be nice? To have communication going on where everyone can actually see it? |

I've added Help to my default list of channels, and I answer questions when I'm able.
I do think one more server wide channel that everyone, even Free players, have access to by default would be a good idea. It would at least leave Help for those actually needing help, and LFG and general chatter could go on the new channel. Some folks have proposed calling this new channel "Freedom".
But regardless, yes, there are going to be folks chatting with the newbies, myself included.
I agree that an open lfg channel should be added and made usable by free players. They are just going to use the help channel for that otherwise.
Okay, apparently "LFG" is effectively global. You can see this chat channel from any zone you happen to be, as long as you're sitting on the same server.
HOWEVER, it appears that many servers, including most of the ones I play on (Liberty, Pinnacle, Virtue) have decided to eschew these for a more... cliquish, elitist "you must join this particular global channel and then be allowed by one of our moderators to chat in it" method. This just seems very inefficient, and also unwelcoming.
Why is this? Why are we avoiding this useful tool (the /lfg channel) that the developers have already created? This tool that will allow us to welcome new players (who won't know about global channels, etc.)?
Are other servers doing this?
