The Original Gundam Movies...

...rule!!!

Now Sunrise needs to let Hollywood make them into real movies and take over the US. I, for one, would welcome our giant-mecha driving, newtype overlords.

"And for us this is the end of all stories, and we can mostly say they lived happily ever after. But for them it was the beginning of the real story. All there life in this world and all there adventures in Narnia had only be the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of The Great Story which no one on earth has ever read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before" - C.S Lewis, The Last Battle.

Well it is 32 years old now, the original series that is.

It reminds me of a list called "You know you are about to die in a anime series when...". I think number 5 was "you're a minor character in a Gundam series"; number 4 was "you're a major character in a Gundam series". Of course this was before Seed and 00 where you can take a beam weapon to the face and pop up again in season 2 or the sequel series.

Ah yes, 0080 War in the Pocket. The university club I use to hang at always wondered if Al ever ended up in a clocktower with a high power riffle due to his gnawing guilt over Bernie and Chris. Al was so broken at the end of that series.

*looks at each movie*

over 2 hours each O_O

Well yea. The original series was 43 episodes. Even if you conservatively place new material per episode at 18 minutes (eliminating the opening, closing and recap) that nearly 13 hours of material. So they cut roughly half of what was there out to make it fit into those three movies.

Just imagine the number of movies they would need to do the same treatment to Bleach.

They actually redid a fair bit of the animation in the second and third movies, after the first was a hit. It was 30% of the second film and 70% of the third that were original animation, according to the little book that came with my DVD box set. The rest was taken from the show as it aired.

Can't blame them, I would imagine the original footage used for TV was initially recorded on 16mm film stock which would look very grainy on a movie screen. Once the first movie was successful they could spend the money to redo and streamline the original series story threads.

I had some friends catch a UC Gundam movie in Japan a few years back, I think it was the Zeta Gundam movie compilation, and they said you could really tell what was original and what was new.

They didn't redo the artwork because the original artwork was intended for a different format that wouldn't look good on a movie screen. They redid the artwork because the original artwork sucked. A lot of it was done in a hurry and with no budget, and it looked absolutely awful. So when they got a budget, they redrew it with people who actually put time and care into it instead of having to bang out a zillion frames a day with the change between the cushions.

That's actually why the episode about Kukurus Doan has never been (officially) released in English: Tomino thought that artwork was just that bad, and given how bad things got later on, boy howdy. Which is really a shame, because it's an important episode in humanizing Zeon.
