It's hard to say what causes more server load. I'd assume things like the banners appearing, zombie-pocalypse, and Rikti Invasions are pretty well tolerated by the servers since they happen so frequently.
The invasion that happened yesterday on Pinnacle in Atlas Park, with countless WarWalkers and 10+ copies of Anti-Matter or Nightstar running around over a prolonged amount of time might actually make the server start to heat up, because that event was 100% GM/Dev/Rep initiated and out of the norm.
