The Sword draft!
noone interested huh... the drft part is more to get the sword names then it is a draft >.> but whatever.
Here's a question: Excalibur has had many incarnations across thousands of mediums, when listing it, should we list specific iterations of it?

the last few attempts at a draft have all kind of fizzled out. I'm partially interested, but I don't have 4 good sword picks in me, let alone any historical swords other than Excalibur.
I'd participate, but I know of exactly one anime/games sword and zero Eastern historical ones, so that cuts me out.

Remember this is a battle between swords, not teams of swords so there really isn't need to have all 4 listed it's just a way to get as many as possible ^.^
So since noone seems interested I declare that I am the winner! mwahahaha my sword is the best!
I'd be in... but the categorization just... bamboozles my interest.
i don't see why... The categories are just there to include more swords.

Not a criticism, just not a structure I would ever have considered, and immediately trying to put swords into those buckets left me with... no suggestions.
Probably just a mental block.
Well they're pretty much separated into
Pre 20th century named swords for the West and East.
Swords that came into popularity pre-digital and globalization era.
Swords that came into their own after the digital and global age.
The hardest one for me is the Novels + D&D + Western Fictional Sword... Since I never read much western fantasy or got involved with D&D... I'm pretty sure i could just type in D&D swords or something. Anime just type in Bleack zanpaktou. the other two just type in legendary swords/weapons. It's pretty easy to find these weapons... and like i said if you can't think of a sword that'd go in the category you can just skip it.

It is all on me. I never would have even messed with categories, and I don't think I would have linked the latter ones quite the way you did (novels and D&D together?). Something in my brain just locks when I try to figure where my suggestions would fit.
I won't pretend that I'm speaking for anyone else, but I would have just said - "suggest two swords".
Yay drafts! Good to see you guys are keeping the dream alive. I'd participate, but... Swords? I can only name ones from games. If I could do all game swords, I'd probably do that.
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
I'm amazed that people are saying they only know swords from video games and Bleach. Doesn't anyone read history or sci-fi? Don't the names Durendal, Joyeuse, Tizona, Gram, Stormbringer, Graywand, Scalpel, Sting, Narsil, or Anduril mean anything to you?
Sigh. Much that once was is lost, for none remain who remember.

That should have been fixed by the first question asked... People could look up game, anime, or manga weapons and probably find that many have their roots in western fiction and history.
Of course then again, just cuz I know their origins doesn't mean I know anything about them. Gram for example if I remember right is simple Siegfried's sword...beyond that I couldn't say.
western Historical - Excaliber in all its incarnations this one holds the prize as the one everyones heard of no other comes close.
eastern historical - Any Masamune sword these swords have a legend in the east almost as pervasive as excalibers in the west.
Anime + games Clouds Buster sword not the first huge **** sword but definately one of them most iconic.
novels + D&D + western Fiction Light Saber I dont care how much you hate the trillogy or what ever there isnt a geek or dork in here that didnt sqeee with glee and wet themselves at the sight of luke first igniting his fathers lightsaber in ep 4. Or who didnt run around with a painted cardboard tube pretending to be darth vader. the lightsabers so pervasive it is in pop culture commercials and much much more.
runners up: Sting (first sword I ever heard about when my dad read the hobbit to me as a kid), Hanzo swords (the Bride made Katanas cool again by chopping the 88s up.) Ichigo Kurosakis Zangetsu (one of the most popular animes and a very distinctive sword), The vorpal Sword (D&D who didnt want one fo these as an earlyAD&D player? one nat 20 and Snicker Snack)
So you mean you'll put down your rock, and I'll put down my sword; and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?

Historical swords:
Durendal was the sword of Roland, the greatest of Charlemagne's paladins. It was said to be indestructible, and using it Roland held off a hundred thousand Moorish invaders all by himself. Durendal still exists -- it's sticking out of a high cliff wall in a little french village, where Roland supposedly threw it to keep anyone else from using it.
Joyeuse was Charlemagne's sword. It was said to have the tip of the Lance of Longinus inside its hilt. Aside from looking pretty it didn't have any special powers. A sword said to be Joyeuse exists in the Louvre, but it's widely regarded to be a copy made after Charlemagne's death.
Tizona was the sword of El Cid. The more powerful the wielder, the greater the fear this sword caused in its opponents, and when El Cid wielded it entire armies surrendered rather than face him. A sword that is said to be Tizona exists in a museum in Spain, if I recall.
Crocea Mors ("Yellow Death") was the sword of Julius Ceasar. It killed everyone who received even a scratch from it. It's lost. (And who would want to find it?)
The sword of King Goujian of Yue is the most beautiful bronze sword ever made. It was discovered in an underwater crypt, yet was still untarnished and sharp after nearly two thousand years. It is kept in a museum in China.
The Grass Cutter sword is a japanese 'chokuto', a double-bladed broadsword that pre-dated the katana. This sword could control the wind and cut entire fields of grass in a single slice. It is supposedly kept in a shrine in Atsuta, but nobody is allowed to see it.
al-Battar ('The Beater') was the sword owned by Goliath, David, Solomon, and eventually by Muhammad. It is said to be the sword that Jesus will use when he returns to Earth to defeat the anti-Christ. It resides in a museum in Turkey.
Western Fiction Swords:
Gram was the sword of the Norse hero Siegfried. It slew the dragon Fafnir and could cleave an anvil in two, but Siegfreid threw it away when he found a better sword.
Stormbringer was the sword of Elric of Melnibone. It gave its wielder great strength and stamina, but it had to be fed with the souls of those it cut, and if you didn't feed it it would come after you.
Graywand was the sword of Fafhrd, and Scalpel was the sword of the Gray Mouser. They weren't anything special, they just had cool names.
Sting is the sword of Bilbo Baggins. He gave it to Frodo eventually. It glowed blue when orcs or goblins were about.
Narsil was the sword used to cut the ring off Sauron's finger, but it was smashed into pieces during that fight. When it was reforged and given to Aragorn, the sword was renamed Anduril.
That's all I've got right now. You'll have to fill in the Eastern Fiction swords yourself; I'm not big on anime.

Western Historical Sword
Eastern Historical Sword
Anime + Games Fictional Sword
Novels + D&D + Western Fictional Sword
I'm slightly confused by Western Historical Sword and Eastern Historical Sword. Are you using swords that have (potentially) fictional attributes attached to them, or fictional swords that have been popularized in West or East outside of games, literature, film and television etc.
I was thinking for example that:
Western Historical:
British 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Sabre
Roman Gladius
Eastern Historical:
Ottoman Kilij Sabre
Chinese Jian Double Edge Straight Sword
Magical-Wand-That-Creates-Death-In-The-Form-Of-A-Black-Sword?
Comrade Smersh, KGB Special Section 8 50 Inv/Fire, Fire/Rad, BS/WP, SD/SS, AR/EM
Other 50s: Plant/Thorn, Bots/Traps, DB/SR, MA/Regen, Rad/Dark - All on Virtue.

So...since there is such a debate about what are the top 10 geek swords... Let's do a draft...
Sign ups will be open till aug 30th or until it looks like no more...
after we're ready to start drafting we will make 2 passes over people.
A list will be randomly generated...
people will select 1 historical sword and 1 fictional sword (you can pass on any category you wish)
We will then go in reverse order and select the other 2 types
Western Historical Sword
Eastern Historical Sword
Anime + Games Fictional Sword
Novels + D&D + Western Fictional Sword
The category sword will go against it's categories' swords in brackets with the best fictional sword going against the best historical sword.
