Marcone: Is this a reference?

So, I thought of a villain, and logged in as Ditzy "Pom-Poms" Marcone, an nrg/nrg brute (named for the... distinctive look of energy melee).

Someone complimented me on the name and asked me whether it was a Dresden Files reference.

Hmm. There is a gang boss named Johnny (early books)/Johnnie (later books) Marcone in those books. The first book is copyright 2000, so it predates CoH. Jim Butcher is known to have played CoH at one point or another.

Is the Family name in CoH a pop culture reference?

This isn't WoW, not every name they come up with is referential.

Not every name is, but that doesn't mean none are. I've never seen that name outside of CoH and those books. I mean, presumably it exists, but I happen not to have run into it.

I've seen a lot of references in this game. Here are a few REALLY obvious examples:

Doc Whedon badge
Around the Bendis badge
Unobtanium (Long before Avatar, thank you)
Cor Leonis
Any Dialogue from Family/Mooks
Day, Fillon and Harris from the Instant Army arc
Atlas Shrugged badge

In fact, here. Go read some of this before you think there aren't references in this game.

I'm inclinded to suggest that like many film/culture jokes, they're both inspired by the same things, rather than one beign a direct lift from the other. But that's just me.

I doubt this. Many Council enemy titles derive from astronomical objects — Galaxy, Nebula, etc, and Cor Leonis (which is an alternate name for the star Regulus as well as being Latin for "heart of the lion") fits in with that without stretching for the Italian/Corleone connection.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?

Keyword was "every".

Just because references exist (and nobody's saying they don't) doesn't mean EVERYTHING is a reference.

Which was the entire point of what LL said.

I believe the OP asked about one specific name only. Whether every name is a reference or not is completely beside the point.

I think it might be a coincidence.

Holy legs, Batman! I've seen frogs jump, and rabbits and cheetahs, but man. You got 'em beat!

Jack was a huge history buff so he added a lot of that kind of stuff in.

The more Dresden files press, the better. That stuff is like crack.
