Returning Empath needs help

First off, a big wave to everyone who's been here long enough to remember me. I spent way too much time here back in the day, but that day was quite a while ago. I've missed this place!

Now, my problem. Since it's been SO long, I'm going crosseyed going through patch notes. Over two years worth of patch notes and issue updates is enough to make anyone's brain hurt. So I'm going to pick your brains instead. I'm going to be posting a succession of builds for review, starting with my namesake, my Empath/Psi blast defender. She's my oldest and still favorite character, so be gentle in your review. I will post other defenders later in their own threads. I forgot how many defenders I had.....

I already know that my slotting of fly is antiquated and will be changing. Not sure what I'm going to do with the excess slots yet, to say nothing of the hammis, but that is one change I'm going to be making for sure. She will still be a flyer, concept will not let me get rid of it, but hover may make the chopping block. I think - I'll have to double check to see if I have that option amongst my vet badges.

Also inf is an issue. While I'd love a purpled build, it's just not going to happen right now. I can likely afford most things reasonably priced, but let's not get too carried away.

TIA!

I'm not an emp pro, but in general, when I make any build these days, I ask "where can I slot the LOTG +rch ios?" I count 3 such powers (Hover, Fort, Veng). These would be candidates for where you move the fly slots to, or perhaps even slotting the LOTG over what's currently in place.

Last I checked (and it's been a while) Micros sold for quite a bit so selling those could get you a nice head start on more exotic items.

Welcome back!

First the good news: Psy Blast amazingly hasn't been nerfed since you left. Except for blasters, and to a lesser extent, for widows. For defenders, Empathy's still okay, Psy Blast is still awesome.

Now the bad news: The usual IO sets for Empaths are expensive as duck. Most IO set bonuses are garbage, resulting in huge demand for the few IO's with great bonuses, specifically +recharge bonuses. This drives the market price of those IOs sky high. And, just your luck, +recharge bonuses are precisely what Empaths really need. Some may see this as a market self-correction for the overpopularity of Empaths. Fat lot of good that does you as a concept player, though. Sorry.

Anyway, your first rung on the ladder will be Frankenslotting. This is a strategy where you slot enhancements based solely on their direct enhancement bonuses, with no regard to set bonuses. It results in a mix of basic IOs, mismatched set IOs, and HOs in most powers. You have lots of HOs banked up, so it probably won't cost you much to achieve a Frankenslotted build. Centrioles in Psychic Scream, Membranes in Fortitude, Peroxisomes in Dominate, random Heal/Rech IOs in Absorb Pain and Regeneration Aura, random Damage/Rech IOs in Mental Blast and Telekinetic Blast and Psionic Tornado, etc., still give you a very solid, very endgame-capable build.

Next, start picking up any desired procs and bonus IOs. This will include the Luck of the Gambler Defense/7.5% Recharge Bonus IO, which should probably be your first goal after you have a nice Frankenslotted baseline. This step will be quite expensive, so the time it takes you to save up the influence or alignment merits will be plenty of time to research your final build. Unless you're playing 24/7 with a catheter, you'll probably score a freespec along the way, so don't worry about going through multiple respecs over time.

Finally, your fully IOd out build will revolve around recharge set bonuses. You can safely ignore almost all the set bonuses in the game: you don't need 2% fear resistance, you don't need 1.5% recovery, you don't need 3% enhanced sleep duration. Recharge is number one. Other worthwhile bonuses you may pursue, depending on your personal taste, include maximum hp, accuracy, damage, and either positional or typed defense. All other set bonuses are a trap designed to distract you from a functional Frankenslotted mix and/or to waste slots better put elsewhere and/or to funnel your inf to evil marketeers.

Remember Reward Merits? They've become somewhat deprecated. The usual method of buying rare (red) recipes with merits is now to convert Reward Merits to Alignment Merits, then get the recipe at a discount. This method roughly doubles the buying power of your Reward Merits. This method is also the only way to buy very rare (purple) and "PvP" recipes for merits. If you have more than 100 Reward Merits stocked up, you may want to start converting them now, since you can only convert so many per day. Note that common and most uncommon recipes (the cheap ones) cannot be bought with Alignment Merits.

As far as the incarnate system goes, it can be overwhelming to just jump in and start trialing and crafting right away. For now, just do Mender Ramiel's arc (either solo or in a team) to unlock your Alpha. You can worry about the rest later when you're ready.

Some Paragonwiki reference links:
IO sets that give recharge set bonuses - Check the market as you plan your fully IOd build. IOs on this list that cost the most money are probably the ones you want.
IO recipes that cannot be purchased with Alignment Merits - The box next to B.O.T.L.E.R. in Fort Trident in Atlas Park is the alignment merit vendor.

Welcome back, LadyMage! Good to see a familiar name coming back.

Rigel_Kent's post above was pretty thorough in terms of a good approach to take and he's absolutely correct that the +recharge sets can get pricy in a hurry and that is what you'll want to shoot for as an empath.

Naturally, the best bonuses of this type are going to come mostly from purples which will be slow in coming, at least initially. If you have the inclination, farming and/or playing the market can net you significant windfalls of influence to spend and while farming can be time-intensive, marketeering doesn't have to be and when combined with some farming can be extremely lucrative. So that's something to consider. You may also find that some folks might be willing to float you some start-up capital no-strings-attached.

As for the Incarnate system, while it can be confusing in a hurry, it is also a ticket to a stronger character without the expense and crafting hassles involved in fully IO'ing your character out and you could probably make larger strides there first - at least getting your Alpha unlocked and most likely going the Spiritual path. Once you realized the build you posted, really the only place to go as far as IOs will be additional recharge with Luck of the Gambler +recharge IOs and purple sets, so you're looking at hundreds of millions per IO at that point - decidedly a long-term goal for most people.

As always, ParagonWiki has some helpful information on the subject.

Lady Mage, her defender kinetic spouse, SG shield tank and my coalition cold defender walked into an alpha unlock Ramiel arc. Sadly, there were few Rikti survivors and old Trapdoor and Minotaur were mere speed bumps. I suggest something in the spiritual alpha tree LM: heal, recharge and stun (scrambled thoughts with more duration, mmmm).

Not sure if you are familiar with the alignment tips/merits. It's a great way to earn the A-merits for the unobtainables. Also, don't forget 50s get a roll for content when exemp down, so even lowbie TFs with maximum spawn counts can be tasty for alpha components/shards.

Oh, I definitely will be going for something in teh spiritual for the alpha slot. I'm well aware of how much recharge is a must for a good Empath build, thus all the doctored wounds etc in the build already.

It's good to hear that not much has changed on that front. I have so many characters to play with and figure out what's changed, that it's good to have my rock to cling to. I'll have to crunch the numbers a bit, swap the slots around, and then save up the precious inf for the global recharges and purples.

And I'm going to have to read up on the alignment stuff. That's all new to me, and while my empath is pretty dyed in the wool hero it sounds like there's profit to be had there. I do have some characters who will be alignment shifting.

Good to be back! Time to shake the rust off and get back to blowing stuff up!

Here's a tweaked version of the build in the first post of the thread for thoughts. Moved a few slots around and changed the choice of Resurrect to Maneuvers to be able to add a LotG +7.5% recharge. Even without replacing Rez and without the Spiritual Incarnate boost Hasten is still only a few seconds off perma. Frankkenslotted Psychic Scream for range to make it a rather huge cone effect since a full set of Posi would yield a 6th 6.25 recharge bonus.

Anyway for thoughts (and further tweaking no doubt) here it is.

While I appreciate the effort, Psi scream is a huge enough cone already. I get in large trouble with it as it is I drive the tanks in my SG nuts with the amount of aggro I grab with it I did swap some things around, and added a slot to fort to keep my three hammis and add a LOTG global recharge. I will think over some of your slotting choices though - they're quite different than what I had picked.

Welcome back LadyMage! How is BabyMage doing BTW?

I'd like to add to all of the above good advice my reccomendation that you visit the Market and Inventions forums. There are several excellent guides and information there that will allow you to make boatloads of influence even while you are logged off.

Okay guys, you're slipping.

Lady, I realize that you may never have needed the fitness pool, but it IS inherent now and you CAN put slots into it! At the very least, put a Health IO into Health, and a End Mod into Stamina to make use of your free fitness abilities.

Also, the Purple Sleep IO set, Fortuna Hypnosis, is VERY cheap for a purple set. You should plan on grabbing that to place into Mass Hyp. Better bonuses and everything.

Finally, a question, is there any reason the level ranges on your enhancements are all over the place? Are you planning your build around IOs you already have, maybe?

Welcome back.

I wanted to pitch in here. Don't know if the others play empathy defenders much but I wanted to add some thoughts from personal experience.

1. Doctored Wounds is a very effective and cheap IO set that works really well for slotting about 5 per power that will accept it. DW offers some very nice bonuses in the Recharge and Healing areas. Right off the bat, you can add an easy +20% bonus recharge.

2. For me, Hover, Fortitude, Maneuvers, and Vengeance are the 4 powers I looked to slot that nifty +7.5% recharge proc from LOTG. For you, none of those powers require slotting much these days (I slot 3 Membranes + 1 LOTG in Fortitude).

3. Recovery Aura is a good candidate for slotting the rare recovery set x5. You will see some nice bonuses from that.

4. You should really look into what attacks you can slot with the Positron's Blast set. PB offers a nice bonus to recharge with it. In all, I have 4 of my secondaries slotted (PB set in 2 powers) and get nice bonuses from those sets.

5. Except for the things I mentioned above, you really do not need a lot of expensive stuff to make your character well-IO'd. My empath has 0 purples and the most expensive stuff on him are 6 Membranes (3 in Fortitude and 3 in Power Build Up to use with Vengeance, etc) and a few choice "procs" to boost over all efficiency.

6. I would aim to get the Tier 4 Spiritual alpha incarnate. It offers a huge benefit to an Empath in terms of healing and recharge.

Hope that helps!

I believe they exported their live game build into Mids.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.

Yeah, only ever had fitness on her when I took a hissy fit over ED. Respecced right back out of it when I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought. I believe, but am not 100% positive that I have put level 50 IOs in all the auto slots in the fitness powers now. I'll check into the purple sleep set, and the reason the level ranges are all over the place is that IOs when they first came out were very expensive, so I used a lot of what I could find quickly. That's not a planned build, that's a direct export of what I had pre-respec.

If you notice, I already have both doctored wounds and Posi's blast slotted in most of the appropriate powers. My new slotting of fort (not above) is identical to what you describe. And while I've not been back all that long, I already have the first tier of spiritual alpha power.

Precisely. I exported it to work on out of game, started combing through patch notes to find out if any significant changes to the game would affect the build, quickly became crosseyed and decided to post here for help.

I'd like to add to all of the above good advice my reccomendation that you visit the Market and Inventions forums. There are several excellent guides and information there that will allow you to make boatloads of influence even while you are logged off.
Oh man do I suck at market stuff. I'm always impressed with what other people can do with it, but I suck at it myself.

Babymage is almost 4, and very excited about starting junior kindergarten in September.
