Freedom Deal breakers...

I've played CoX for more than a few years and was initially very excited when I heard the rumor that there might be a F2P version coming out, and that I would be able to get a lot of my friends to come over from other F2P and PS games, but as I read the http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/fre...es.html#tabs-4 tables I see a few things that will more than likely end up as deal breakers for them

1. The lack or whispers/tells is going to be a big one. I never send a team invite without first sending a tell asking if they would like to join first. its just common courtesy.

2. the inability to join a sg.

3. only 2 slots, this should be at least 4 slots.

4.No In-Game Mail?

I understand that some of this is because of a worry that there will be an influx of spam, but from what I've seen from other F2Ps that I have played it is normally not the case.

What I see CoX ending up with, if anything, is the non gamers, there are other games out there that allow for a lot more freedom for their F2P players, and the potential CoX customer base is just gonna stay where they're at or find another game that allows for greater freedom, and not with us.

RMT spam would be a big issue if free accounts were allowed to send tells. I dont see that changing. I can remember just a few years back when you could not go 2 min without getting spammed with tells and your mailbox was constanly full with crap.

On the plus side, anyone can play the game, figure out they like it, then spend the smallest amount of cash they can spend and unlock everything you mentioned above except for cha slots.

As far as that goes, I think we should go the same route most F2P games go and do 2 per server, not 2 total.

Returning players who haven't resubscribed to get a VIP account will have a Premium account, and for the princely sum of $5, someone could purchase 400 Paragon points and get all the benefits of Premium-ness, plus some points to spend on stuff.

Considering the abuse of trial accounts by RMT companies before the trial restrictions were put in place, it was wise of them to put these limitations in place.

Nope. 2 slots, for all servers.

/this.

I actually logged onto a character who i hadn't spent much time playing or, for that matter checked email on in... a while. (I'm used to it just having the "stuff" I'm holding/transferring at this point.)

It had 66 emails.

5 of them were things I was transferring... the rest, spam from back then.

Yeah. Don't miss those days at all.

They could always offer influence for sale via Paragon Points.

Pull the rug out from under the RMTers by offering the same thing they're selling securely and in the game itself, and you might find they will start seeking greener pastures.

They won't stick around if they can't make any money.

Unfortunately, it would solve one problem while creating another: Your performance in the game would be greatly enhanced by how much disposable cash you have to spend on buying influence. (That's almost always a bad thing where online games are concerned)

Like I mentioned in another thread, one possible solution to the freebie player's tell situation is allowing them to send tells to friends.

Nobody friends an RMTer, not unless they're a masochist.

Sure they can't exactly send tells to strangers but it would make tells more useful for free players while keeping the spammers out.

Or just let them reply to tells. They can't initiate so you've dealt with the RMTers, but their buddies can send a tell to get them to team up.

Check out the Repeat Offenders network of SGs! You'll be glad you did.

Agreed strongly with 1 and 2. 3 isn't a deal breaker but could be better. 4 is unnecessary.

I would add that I think global channels should be made available to free players, so outside communities can easily join the game together. The limit would be that channel admins could choose to allow/disallow free players from joining their channels, or to silence free players.
