Returning Inv/SS tank, seeking build advice.

After a year long haitus, I re-upped Friday and purchased Going Rogue. This is my build in its current form, after a respec to take advantage of the Fitness inherent change. It has served me well, but I'm looking for any advice on improving it. My goals are survivability, and maintaining a theme that omits "overt" powers like laser eye beams. Incidentally, I don't have the City Traveler reward, I just blundered through the build without thinking about the proper order of things.

Just a pointer for those who like to run Hasten.

I would highly recommend you have a lot of end recovery to deal with both the hasten and rage crash. I've had problems in the past running both, and I finally dropped hasten, besides hasten isn't that important on a Invul/SS build a global recharge of 60-70 % will do just fine and its one less power and crash you'll have to deal with.

And I would recommend soft capped defense to all typed damage, not just S/L

I have kind of wanted to get out of Speed.

Anyway, I'd love to see some more builds. I know what my focus was when I tuned this build, and a lot of what I'm seeing runs counter to the advice I was given. Mind you, I don't think anyone's wrong, I'm just curious as to build design.

I'm also not eager to dump a lot of these rare enhancements...

Alright, here's draft 1 of my rebuild. I checked a lot of Inv/SS builds to get this, and tooled around til I found the common threads (which is namely the aggressive pursuit of Def bonuses).

Here is a few tweaks to you build, I personally don't like hasten as I stated before but I kept it in for you anyway.

I moved some powers around and retooled some of the slots.

Unlike Beef Cake, I'm ok with Hasten. I do however think Focused Accuracy on a Inv tank is a waste. Keep it if you wish, but I really found it an unnecessary endurance drain on them.

Here's my revision of your build. I do like what Beef's done as well. If nothing else this will give a couple of things to look at, maybe even give you some ideas. You will be spending more then a few pretty pennies for those PvP IOs.

Anyway, have a look.

Yeah, I figure I've got a grind ahead of me one way or another, but pursuing PVP IOs gives me something to do with my main.

Anyway, is there another good choice for a power beside Energy Torrent or Grant Invisibility? I want to weigh my options.

Beef Cake, you recommend soft capped defense to all damage -- how would you go about softcapping defense to psi? /psi is the big hole in the set so you'd pretty much have to do it with set bonuses alone, and getting to 45% just from set bonuses seems pretty futile to me.

Scrapper Jack (SJ/WP Brute), Sky Commando (WP/SJ Tanker), Curveball (Rad/DP Defender), and a bunch more.

Defense to Psi is the only damage type you can't soft cap, well you may be able to, I never tried. I currently have 18% on my tank, and I didn't even try for it, I just happen to get it. Same goes for Psi resist, its the only major hole in the set.

What's your strategy for dealing with Psi? There's quite a bit in endgame, and it can really take the wind out of your tank sails.

I'll be honest, I don't have much problems with Psi. I run Arachnos/Carnie/Clockwork missions quite often and never had any issues with Psi. I know you can build for psi resist, but I don't feel you have to. Remember, a lot of psi attacks do have secondary damage types like Smashing, which your defense will cover, so that protects you from many psi attacks. And with a well built tank, your regen should cover the rest.

This is a good point; Psi damage really is very rare... and in most cases where it becomes somewhat prevalent it's usually fairly low absolute damage. 9 out of 10 times you face Psi your innate hit points, regen and the occasional Dull Pain are all you need. If it gets beyond that, well, that's what your inspiration tray is for.

Oh, as an added bonus of building for the 45% defense soft cap to S/L/E/N damage (F/C is much lower priority) you'll also be building a fair amount of positional melee/ranged defense that will also apply to most Psi damage. I don't have my build in front of me right now but my soft capped Invuln has something around 20-25% melee/ranged defense; all as a byproduct of building typed defenses.

Remember how damage works in this game.

Most damage has multiple types/positions attached.

As such, in a lot of cases, psi damaged is alloyed with another damage type or position for which you have greater defense numbers.

Yes, there are a couple cases of pure psi in the game. But these are corner cases, not the norm.

Basically, if you're really worried about pure psi damage, chomp a purple before charging in just to buffer yourself.

If you're worried about MASSED psi damage (like on ship raids) eat some oranges.

I actually did not know that Psi usually was multityped. Neat.

Suggestions, if you really want to use the Panacea Proc, I would move that to Health. That way it works at all levels. No sense in putting in a level 44 power only to lose it when you exemp down to a lower level.

Also, the +3 resist isn't needed either unless you have the money and just want that extra 3% resist because its not helping your S/L at all, only your Elements and Energies.

I personally think Rage is underslotted. Rage makes this build shine so I like to slot it well. Show it some love

Maneuvers isn't needed at all, you need to remember with Invincibility and 1 enemy in melee, you are at soft capped defense already, when you add 9 more enemies in melee your defense increases, so Maneuvers is more of a end drain on you. Yes its a good power, but not needed at all.

Any suggestions for a replacement? I really don't want to break my theme by dipping into Concealment or taking Energy Torrent.

Well if you really need that Lotg 7.5 recharge you only have Maneuvers or something from the stealth pool. So if you don't want the stealth pool then stay with Maneuvers, but keep in mind you don't need to use it. But if you're on teams and you feel your end recovery is ok, then turn it on it will help your team as well as you.

This my INV/SS build. I'm softcapped to S/L/E/N/F/C, nearly 300% regen, high recovery/low endurance, and fully slotted fast recharging attacks.

A few things that will stick out is that Dull Pain only has one slot. This is because I have the Incarnate power Rebirth: Regen which i use as my main heal. Conserve Power is only one slotted as well because I picked up the Cardiac Alpha. There are a few pricey pieces here but nothing like PVP IO or purple IO expensive.

Hope this gives you a few ideas.

Excellent, I'll give it a look!

Also, while I've got this thread here, any good suggestions for what I should slot for Interface?

Since the "one in range of Invinc" scenario is the minimum amount of defense you'll have, if you are going to run Maneuvers you can drop the GA +Def. I'd recommend saving the 2 billion or so, or save it for a character that needs it a lot more than a Invul tank. You can move that slot to Taunt and put a 6th Mocking Beratement in there for another 7.5% recharge bonus--and a cheap one at that. (And no, that won't put you over the Rule of 5 for recharge bonuses.)

Also, whether you'll be running Maneuvers or keeping the GA +Def and using Maneuvers as a set mule, you don't really need the 1.88% S/L defense bonus from the ToD set. I'd replace that with 5 slots of Crushing Impact for a 5% recharge bonus. Currently Maneuvers is unslotted for end reduction, so I'd take the extra slot from Haymaker and put some end reduction in Maneuvers--maybe the LotG Def/End or something of that sort.

That is some really good advice. Thanks a lot!

Since I have Hecatomb, and it gives a better recharge bonus, I'll slot that instead. Now, what I'm thinking I might do is change Knockout Blow to five slots and put Hecatomb in there, and six slot Haymaker with Mako's Bite.
