should I bother slotting for defense and enhancing survivablity on an ss/elec brute?
If you can reach 32.5% S/L defense and use a small inspiration (to reach 45%) during tougher fights, you will notice a major difference over having no defense. If you make it so the debuffing enemies have very little chance to hit you, then your defenses will stay high for most of the fight. An attack has to land for you to be debuffed by it.
Also, being at 0% defense does not mean you can't be debuffed. You can go into the negatives. Even-level minions have a 50% chance to hit you. If you get debuffed by 10%, they will have a 60% chance to hit you. Sitting at 0% defense means you will quickly give your enemies 95% chance to hit you when you do get debuffed. If you have 45% defense, the chances of dropping into the negatives are much lower.
Another thing to consider is that not many mobs debuff heavily at 50. Cimeroreans are the biggest threat, but outside of ITF your defenses are relatively effective.
Slotting for regeneration can not add a significant amount of survivability.
Look for other Electric Armor builds on these forums. Melee sets are fairly easy to swap between so the builds don't have to be SS/Elec.
I thought Defense but is it pointless because Elec armor has NO def debuff resistance? All it takes is a whack from a Cimeroran or countless other mobs and my IO bonuses may as well not exist. I can get about 30% smash/lethal defense, 22% in others through creative slotting. But with no def debuff resist, should I even bother?

Here's a pre-incarnate build with a G-HM-KO-P-G-HM-P attack chain (which isn't perfect but is decently close) and all the AOE offensive niceties. Defensively, you've got softcapped SL defense and 58% SL resist, capped energy resist, and a decent 15-20% defense and 30-40% resist to everything else.

I have a basically bottomless budget right now [ripped apart a few alts i never used and made billions. ahh, if only the real market were so easy.] and am looking at making my SS/Elec brute into a powerhouse. My problem is this:
I have no idea how to enhance an elec armor brute's survivability. Or should I slot for regen? It seems pretty hard to get Elecs regeneration anywhere decent however, even with near-perma Energize. I like doing lots of damage. I like being tough to kill. I want to be a tank mage in the melee sense. Please help me out. |
After that I'd work on recharge to have both Energize and Foot Stomp coming back asap. Energize to keep regen high and Foot Stomp to mitigate damage with kd.
Lastly I always advise with /Ela that you open with Power Sink and have at least some end mod slotted in Lightning Field to keep mobs drained. The end drain adds a large chunk of survival to the toon for any fight that lasts longer than the recharge time of power sink.
Global: @Kelig
Try this on for size, softcapped to S/L and 2 seconds off of permahaste. No purples too, so if you wanna invest a couple billion you can do it even better.

In the long haul, they'll eventually chisel away your defense, yes. But in the short to medium haul they'll all be dead.
And by the way, there is a way to for anyone to get defense debuff resistance now, with Incarnate Ageless (I think). It tapers off over time, but you might take a look and see if it works for you.
Really it depends on what you're doing with the brute.
If you're running tip missions on x1 or x2 then ... no. Elec's resists don't start getting overwhelmed until x4 or x5.
If you're AE farming energy farms then... no. 90% resist and purples as they drop.
If you're doing TFs or the Incarnate trials then... no. Your team will save you before your resists fail. Especially on the Incarnate trials.
If you're showing off on a TF and splitting from the team constantly to do your own thing then yes.
Which leads to showing off in general. If you're trying to solo pylons or avs or TFs, etc then yes.
Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."
On topic- building for multi-layered defense is always a good thing. I liked my mainish /fa brute a lot before I added IOs. I added in a good mix of IOs and got a few bonuses and noted her survivability increased tremendously. After getting her defense softcapped to S/L type damage and getting even more bonuses, she is a blast. Barely touchable and like an energizer bunny, she is hard to take down.
/Ela will benefit similarly. It is a rugged resistance set to start, and adding in more mitigation will be a worthy investment. You will notice your time spent in action increases while time spent popping inspirations will decrease.
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.
"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."
- Vitality
Ok. Your team or inspiration tray will save you before your resists fail. I do know from experience my own Elec with no defense bonuses does burn through her row of large purples and large greens, especially on Lambda when people often still do split up for no good reason.
For me if I had unlimited money it would fall into the category of 'sure, why not'. You WILL be a lot more survivable with defense bonuses than without, and that's always nice even if it's not necessary.
Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."
If you had to choose only one character to slot expensive IO's in, SS/Elec is a good choice.

Agreed. In fact I'm in the contemplation stages of doing just that as a new 'main'. With almost 2000 hours played, all incarnate abilities, and being fully IO'd my sm/wp truly is 'complete' until new incarnate abilities come out.
