Greetings! I am a red-side player who is looking to branch out a little. I have 3 lvl 50 brutes, plus a lvl 45. I also have a 50 cor and 50 MM. I played a dom once to maybe 12.

I like to play with my family. My wife is pretty good, but my kids are young and inexperienced. I want to play a foursome with them, and I've dabbled with a 4 cor team, but it's pretty tough.

So my new idea is for my boys to play ss/fa brutes. You know, just pure smash. And I want my wife and I to play toons that can really make them as survivable as possible, so they don't have to worry about dying. To make a long story short, I ended up with both of us playing controllers, because we never have, they have the buffs we want to toughen up the brutes, and I want to play Mind and see if I can keep all the heroes slept on the RSF like a perma-mind-dom.

So, leveling up I should mostly be with that foursome. The first goal is to provide as much res as possible to the brutes. Second goal is not to die myself. Third goal is to control mobs. I need some stealth that is closer to invisibility. I need to be able to fly. I need to have the endurance required to run all these toggles. I don't know that I need perma-hasten, but something close to it.

I will be able to run tips on many alts to get A-merits to purchase the really expensive IO's. I haven't checked the purple holds and confuses and sleeps, but I don't think they are TOO expensive for me.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I should be getting an extra 25% defense to all from my wifes plant/cold. 16% from shields, 4% from maneuvers, and 5% from arctic fog. /FA is one of the squishier brute sets, but with the extra 29% defense (from my wife's stuff and my maneuvers) and the 39% res to all but psi from me, they should be very durable to go with their high end offensive output.

Unfortunately, there are so many ways I could go with this build, I'm not sure which is best. I am also not sure if I'm choosing the right epic. I like psionic mastery on the surface because I want some status protection from indomitable will, mind over body stacks some more res with my toggles, and world of confusion seems like a cheap toggle to go with my other confuse powers.

I'll post what I've thrown together here. I think I've explained most of my choices. I still have 5 slots left, and some of them need to go in levitate and liquefy. I put straight res in the shields because I'm not sure what to go for there. It looks like I might need either cardiac alpha or ageless in destiny for the endurance.

I'd welcome any thoughts, criticism, and pointers on this build. Thanks.

My sugestions:

For stealth, get rid of the proc in Hover, and put the Celerity proc in Sprint. That way you're not wasting a slot.

Also, if you're going to 6-slots your attacks, use the Thunderstrike set. That'll give you 3.75 ranged defense PER attack (so that's 11.25% ranged defense all together) as well as not gimping your attack abilities (Sleep breaks when things are attacked, and enemies are going to be dead before your ST hold wears off anyway, so there's little point to slotting for duration. On a similair note, slot Terrify for damage with Posi's blast or Ragnorok; similar bonuses and you'll get more out of the actual power, as "Fear" is also broken for a moment when a foe is attacked)

Also, by level 50, your flight speed will be capped. You can forgo the flight speed enhancement in fly and put the slot to use elsewhere.

As for slotting for defense: go for ranged, and make sure you're hovering out of melee at all times. It'll be easier to get soft-capped for ranged if you're not also going after melee defense.

Here, I've upped your ranged defense to 36% and upped your hasten-less recharge to 90. Unfortunately you only have 3 slots to work with for Liquify (having never played sonic to a high enough level to use that power, I don't know how many slots it needs to be effective):

The Unbounded Leap stealth proc also works in Sprint, and it is usually a lot cheaper than the Celerity proc.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to work that into my build.

The build that Steele posted is excellent, but I think you could lose the second slot in Sonic Siphon and put it in Fly instead. That would give you another 1.25% ranged def, unless there are already 5 of those (I didn't count). With a 5 second recharge on Siphon it doesn't matter so much if it misses once in a while. You could also add a 6th slot to Confuse for the 3.125% ranged def bonus from Malaise's Illusions, but that does mean that Confuse will have a chance to do damage and draw aggro to you. If you're always going to be on a team with two brutes you won't have to worry about that and the huge def boost might be worth it. Additionally, if you change a few slots around in terms of what level you add them, you can get 4 slots into Liquefy. You have a lot of options, but I definitely think a second slot in Siphon is a waste.

You can also grab Invisibility instead of Grant Invisibility at 49 if you'd rather have that, because both of them take the LotG +recharge enhancement.

Here's a build that should be a little more affordable, with almost the same defense and 5% less recharge:

Yeah, he could go for extra def, but his wife will be playing a /Cold and will have shield buffs, so close enough. As-is, he should be soft-capped with just Glacial shield.

A thought did just occur to me, OP: do you and your wife HAVE to be sonic and cold, respectively? You'll have plenty of def/res buffs and foe debuffs, but you have little healing (spirit tree at most), and little buffs outside of def/res. No +ToHit, no +recharge, no +recovery, no +damage... things that would really make your kids' brutes shine. And since you and your wife will be playing controllers, it'll be even harder for the brutes to build up fury, as the foes won't be attacking back.

You could easily alleviate this by going */Kin. The only issue is that ID would need to be recast every minute or so to keep up the resistance buff, but speed boost + siphon power + fulcrum shift + transference = faster killing (and debuffed foes), so they won't be taking as much damage anyway.

Just a thought. Rad might also work (+ recharge, + damage, foes res debuffed, the ability to rez someone if things go south, etc)

-STEELE =)

Allied to all sides so that no matter what, I'll come out on top!
Oh, and Crimson demands you play this arc-> Twisted Knives (MA Arc #397769)

One thing that stuck out for me was the amount of -KB. The original build has 3 -KB IOs for mag 12, which seems like it might be unnecessary on a non-melee type. EmperorSteele's build gives you mag 8, and Melancholia's has no -KB, which I'm thinking might just be a case of her moving slots around and accidentally leaving out the Zephyr -KB instead of the other one?

I'd personally go for a single -KB IO on a ranged character, for mag 4, so a single Zephyr would be fine and would free up a slot or two. I don't see the point in going mag 8; in practice, it offers virtually the same protection as mag 4.

Wow, even more responses.

Melencholia, thanks for the idea that sonic siphon is overslotted. I moved a slot to liquefy. But as Steele said, with my wife's /cold buffs, I won't need the extra ranged defense.

Steele, the reason we're playing the /sonic and /cold is to make the boy's brutes just as tough as possible. /fa already has one of the best heals in the game with healing flames. They already have an endurance recovery tool with consume. They have +to hit and +damage with rage.

/fa's weakness is being kind of squishy. If I give them some decent IO's they can have in the neighborhood of 22/17/23 defense for Melee/Ranged/AoE and 50/50/31/31/90/21/15/9 res to S/L/E/N/F/C/T/P.

The /cold (with my maneuvers too) can soft cap their positional defense. I'll add 36 to all res except psi, the ice shields can give another 22 to cold, frostworks gives 15 to toxic, and the fog will give 18 to cold and energy, for final res totals of 86/86/85/67/90/90/66/9.

I don't what will hurt something is soft capped to positional defense and nearly hardcapped to smashing/lethal, fire/cold, and energy, and 66 res to negative and toxic. Plus, those shields are on four minute timers. I like that we will only have to apply that often. Doing every 60 seconds or 90 seconds gets old.

And Selina, you are right, I put in 12 points of KB because I'm used to playing melee. In my final build here I went down to just 4 points.

So here is my revised build for everyone. I will welcome even more comments.

Heya Evil Tim...

Have you thought of putting the set of 5 Coercive Persuasion into Confuse and the 5 Malaise into Mass Confuse? Just think that you'd get better results having your Confuse working like a mini Mass Confuse with the Contagious Confusion in the single target Confuse. I hope I didn't confuse you talking about all of this confusion stuff. LOL. You'd still get the same set bonuses...or...if it's not too late, I'd think of going Mind/Kin to complement the /cold and /fa's that the wife and kids are playing.

Posted

About the power set topic. I also think Kin would be godly for a duo of brutes. If you like the "buff" idea Thermal has abit less resist debuff than Sonic but has a damage buff and strong heals along with resist buffs, and a resurection power.
Mind Control also has abit too much hard control, if you lock down everything 2 brutes may have fury issues. Maybe a Sonic Corr would fit better, or Ice or Fire Control.

I've come close to perma-sleeping the heroes on RSF with my mind/kin but couldnt quite manage it - but my build wasnt completely finished. I suspect it is possible but obviously not as easy for a troller as it is for a dom.

If you are still wanting to do this then perhaps you should free up an extra slot for hasten. This would put the recharge time down to 125s leaving you only 5 seconds of downtime. To perma-sleep the heroes you need mass hypnosis up as much as possible so getting hasten as close as possible to perma would be a good idea.

Life is one big practical joke that we as the human race have yet to see the punchline to. Once you work that out the rest is easy.

I'm planning on going spiritual alpha, which would make hasten perma.
