Launcher Warning

All day yesterday, and now today I repeatedly get this warning when I open the NCSoft Launcher:

The NCLauncher has detected a Windows Virtual Store folder for City of Heroes, and an install in Program Files. The NC Launcher would like to remove the folder in your Virtual Store; not removing this folder could cause errors. Can NCLauncher remove the folder below?

Then it gives the location.

I click yes, then the next time I start the launcher it happens again.

Whats going on here?

The Windows Virtual Store folder is where Windows 7/Vista puts things that apps are trying to write to places that they don't have permission to, when you have UAC enabled.

The application doesn't know that they're in the virtual store instead of where they should be because Windows lies (for want of a better word) about it. Removing the virtual store contents is pointless if the application you're using is just going to put them back there again next time you run it (which is what it looks like here).

The "solution" is a properly written application that behaves correctly with UAC. The workaround is to disable UAC.

Either way, it shouldn't actually cause you any problems (contrary to the Launcher's claims) unless you're running in a multi-user environment and multiple users are running the same app (because the virtual store is per-user).

I got the same problem. the stupid thing wants to repair and update the whole time. This is not a multi user environment either. So how to be able to play again?

As of this upate (i assume we got one) the gameclient is dead sprouting errors as above and there is no way to to force the game to start playing since I have the wrong version now.

help?

This works. Disable UAC, restart, update COH, re-enable UAC, restart.

Thanks for the amateurish hassle, NC.

UAC seems to cause a lot of hassle. Why do people leave it enabled?

Because to me, the benefit outweighs the cost. Having control on what can and cannot run on your computer is a plus.

Just because developers cannot develop applications that work properly with a security feature of a whole operating system, I shouldn't have to remove this layer of security (the only layer of security, because I refuse to hog my system down with anti-virus/anti-spyware/ad-block/anti-malware/anti-peanuts/anti-drugs/anti-rainbows/anti-cookies programs).

We share the same philosophy, I just believe in one less hassle than you.

... Why does this sound so familiar...

Anyhoo, I built my rig in Feb of 2010 and have been running without UAC, antivirus or persistent spyware scanning since then. Scanned with malwarebytes this last weekend on a lark, it found nothing.

for the record, the procedure to disable this is described here? in the support section?

How do I disable User Account Control?

  1. Click on the Start button and then select the Control Panel.
  2. Type UAC in the search box with the magnifying glass.
  3. You will see a link labeled Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off. Click this link.
  4. Uncheck the box next to Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. When prompted, restart the computer.

Wooha, that is a thing of my computer. Not the NClauncher. You sure that I have to disable this one??

If you don't know what UAC is, what it does and how it operates then I wouldn't recommend turning it off.

I'm going to try and replicate this issue on my Laptop (Don't run the Launcher on my desktop) to see if I can figure out what might be causing it.

I had to re-emphasize this.

If you don't know what UAC is and what it does, then chances are, you definitely need it. Even if you do, I'd still say you need it. But people disagree with me on that, and for a few good reasons.

The hassle of a few more clicks in NCSoft Launcher and other areas is worth it.

I've seen mention that the old launchers are supposed to cease functioning some day. Does anyone know when that day is to be?

That's for Windows Vista.

On Windows 7, it's a slider bar.

So #4 for Windows 7 is "Slide the bar all the way down."

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I got this today and I have UAC turned off!

Not sure what's up with that.

Or you could point them at reference material and let them research it themselves rather than give vague, ominous warnings.

My problem with that argument is that, in the vast majority of cases, the people who care enough will have already run off to Google and started researching and those who don't aren't going to be swayed into doing so simply by providing them with a handy link

I have decided to not disable UAC at this time, as the game is still playable. I started a support ticket about this, it has been escalated but I have yet to hear anything after the first email. I'll keep you guys posted.

I don't think anyone official has said yet. My guess would be when Issue 21 hits, but that's just a guess.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Well I had to turn the AUC of. A shame because it looked like a good feature. Mind you this is my second day having windows 7. I used to run XP for a long while. At least there, I had some idea what things are doing.

windows 7 got loads of all sort of weird stuff. it will take some time to figure them all out. Next puzzle is what the folder computer files(x86) is for.

Your Windows 7 is 64-bit. That means it makes use of the 64-bit architecture of your CPU. However, 32-bit programs can still run on a 64-bit system (usually).

In Windows, 64-bit program files are organized into C:\Program Files\

Similarly, 32-bit program files are organized into C:\Program Files (x86)\

City of Heroes, being a 32-bit application, would go into C:\Program Files (x86)\ by default unless you specify otherwise.

Update:

Support asked me to disable UAC. I did. It did nothing to eliminate the original NCLauncher error. However, my framerate jumped dramatically, so I am at least happy about that.

Thanks for this information. One less for me to search for

And, yes I can play now, though it keeps asking about deleting stuff. But the I can play now part is most important.

I too got this message. After running an full system scan and searching through the hidden files/folders I found the folders giving the launcher fits. Mind you for me the path given in the error message wasn't correct the folder was actually in Roaming under USERS AppData *shrugs* but for anyone else check the path first then the other folders in AppData.
All three of my COH (Live, Test and Beta) had folders in there containing screenshots and chatlogs. I moved them to their appropriate program folders on the C drive, manually deleted the VirtualStore COH folders, then ran the Launcher. Problem solved.

To find hidden Files/Folders in Win 7:
1) Start
2) Control Panel
3) Click on Appearance and Personalization
4) Click on Folder Options
5) Go to tab "View" and click on the box marked "Show hidden files, folders or drives"
6) Click "Apply" then "Ok"

Note to self: Check AppData for COH folders frequently as I am not going to turn off UAC.
