How do you rename a Generic'ed character?
I guess the obvious caveat would be "How do I change my name, without paying for it?"
Or is paying 10 bucks the price of naming a character something that someone somewhere MIGHT find offensive?
You should have been sent an email requesting three alternate names. Reply to that.
If you didn't get one, start a support ticket, explain the situation (genericed, didn't get the email) and put in the requests - and go verify your email and that NCSoft's messages aren't going to the junk bin.
Also, you mention "a few months" but I see a forum date of 2005 - how old was the character? When was the last time they had their old name, and what level was it? It's been a few years, but there's been an "inactive name script" run twice (one around when COV was released, one later, IIRC.) First one affected anyone inactive for 90 days and level 35 or below - the name could be claimed by anyone (but not automatically renamed - if you came back and it wasn't claimed, you'd still have it,) the second time level 6 and below (or below 6... one of the two.) It's been some time since it's been run though.
There is a name I've been using for 30+ years now although I created a character with that name when I first started playing COH, not long after I rerolled him and during the time I deleted and remade the character someone else took the name
Since then I check now and again (with the check name option) just in case. This thread reminded me to check again last night, and it said the name was available! So I now have a level 1 again with my original name.
So I guess either recently there was another script ran or the character that did have the name was deleted or moved to another server.
I had a character I named....well, I named something that I thought would be too clinical for someone to care, but I guess someone had a problem with it. Came back months later, found the character had been turned into a Generic.
QUestion is, how do I change the name to something else? |
Getting a generic'd name should be a badged accolade!
There are a couple of possibilities as to why your name was genericed. 1. The trademark holder himself petitioned it (highly unlikely, but possible) or 2. You were the victim of someone with very little sense of humour and/or highly prudish.
That being said, I can understand why it was genericed. T for Teen and all that.

The OP's board name is Amish Justice.
How bad could the generic'd toon's name have been?

I have a generic'd toon also, so stupid to not allow the name 'Captain Laxative'.
Anyhow, maybe we should get together with our generic'd toons for a generic only team lol.

In most cases, names that make it past the filter yet are found to not be acceptable within the service will be changed. If you are found with an invalid character name, a Game Master (GM) will change your name immediately. A request will be sent by e-mail for three alternative names for each character found in violation. As soon as you reply, the requested names will be reviewed. If the names are not in violation of the rules, the character will be given the first name that is not already in use. |
Otherwise, what Bill said.

I have an old trial account, from back when they did the double-prestige grant. I use it now to check for name availability. The check character is level 1, and inactive, so he'd lose his name if the script were ever run.
Pinnacle, "That guy with bots." 1222 days offline. Name still showing "In use."
The actual Character was an Energy Blaster named "Sperm Donor"

I later gave him a little tail and the Atomic Aura, white around his hands.
I'm still waiting to hear back from...well, from whoever's reading my petition, on whether my alternate names have been accepted. To be honest, I was surprised at the genericking, but I've got a more clinical relationship with sperm, because of my work.
Words fail me.

After a close look at that pic I think I'd one-star you just to avoid the mental image.
Rename suggestions:
Fluid Donor
Body Fluids
Fulltime Donor
The Incredible Sperm
Genetic Material4U
The Love Glove
My pet peeve is people who refuse to acknowledge it when I tell them my character has unlimited power. If I rp attack them they are of course disintegrated beyond the ability of any hospital or magic to restore. Yet despite this they refuse to delete their characters and still keep playing them as if nothing happened. ~Mandu, 07-16-2010
What got him generic'd was the word sperm. I've had a toon or 2 get genericized before myself so I know what the OP is going through. Tadpole donor probably would have not gotten the stick. But who knows.
