Back from a 1000 days break with some questions

Hi everyone,

So I was gone from PC gaming in general for the last 3 years. However we recently got cable internet hooked to my new house and I decided to take a peek at my old love.

I have a lot of old heroes that have been waiting for me but I decided to start fresh to get back in the game and I wanted to live as a Praetorian.

On of the only 2 ATs I haven't played are Stalkers and Dominators. After a lot of reading on the forums and on the different wikis my choice is to go the Dominator way.

My two choices are as follow

Plant/Earth: I've always wanted to play a Plant dom but my first 50 was a spine scrapper and for concepts reasons I couldn't wrap my head around anything other than thorns which is almost identical to spine. The thing is I don't see a lot of threads on that build and I'm wondering why that is the case. Is the combo any good?

Elec/?: My two choices for secondary are Electric or Energy. I do not know which one to choose but Electric is higher on the list because I know how much people hate the KB when you are in teams.


So, what I really want to know is if Plant/Earth is any good because that is really my first choice. If Elec/EM and Elec/Elm builds are more efficient I'll take that route.

Welcome back to the fold Dark!


I don't have a good explaination as to why there aren't any Plant/Eath guides out there. What I can tell you is that Plant/Earth is a superb Domination combo made even more uber by the new Incarnate powers. I'm not sure if you're aware of what the Incarnate system is but there are numerous sources for info round these parts that can fill you in.

Elec/? will be well suited to either elec or energy assault sets. Elec has faster recharging melee options with build up for addiotnal damage, a pet and a little added end drain where as energy gives you powerboost for added control power, knockback options and stuns with heavy hitting albeit slower melee attacks.

Plant/Fire is your awesome friend. Great control from Plant and great damage from Fire Assault. Go team.

Fire = more AOE goodness than Earth

Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it. The reason I'm doing Fire Doms is that I have a Scrapper and a Controller already that use fire powers and I wanted a different flavor. Will start a plant/stone troller and see how it goes. Thanks again.

First, Welcome Back!

Of these two, I would suggest Electric/Electric. Regardless of whether teammates like knockback, Electric Control does not do well with knockback. Much of its control is based upon a location-targetted pulsing sleep patch (Static Field) and chaining powers (Jolting Chain and Synaptic Overload). The AoE Immob does not have -Knockback to make Jolting Chain work. As a result, using knockback powers will disrupt your own efforts to control.

My first 50 was a plant/fire Dom. The last time I played him, the Brute on our team said "that's just not right" in the middle of a mission. When asked what he meant, he said "A Dominator should NOT do that much damage."

As I've posted elsewhere in response to this: the knockback is nowhere as bad as one would think from theory. In fact it's excellent.

NRG's knockback is single target, not AOE, which makes a huge difference. Plus anything you are knocking back is likely to be dead very quickly, so the fact it's outside of the sleep patch and Chain ranges is pretty much irrelevant. It's perpetually in the air, probably also held and taking lots of single target blast damage. It doesn't need to be Jolted, Slept or End Drained. Keep those for his mates clustered around you.

Elec/NRG is excellent at controlling the group and draining them very quickly (thanks to Power Boost, which is also gold when used with Synaptic Overload as an opener) whilest you select each target and send them skidding down the road of defeat.

You'll also laugh at traditionally nasty enemies for Dominators like Arachnos bosses, Super Stunners and the like (but not Big Dogs, they still suck)
