Ok so I am sitting here fluatruted and truely considering ending 5 years of support for this game because the security behind my accounts has become more diffecult then my banks. all I wanted to do is log in and purchase the animal pack for my account, but as I am not at my home for a few weeks my IP is different then what they want. so I have to anwser so security question that I think I set 5 years ago. And I got only one chance. Then the heavy handed and machine like mechinism comes into play asked for programme codes and 20 digite logins given to me at issue. what the heck? so I answer the beat I could and I got the reaponse. You didnot answer between the lines.. Arrggggg. so question do I have to do this now or can I wait till I at home?

No because you'd get it there too.

You're going to have to call NCSoft and have them reset your questions.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Many of us went through the same problems when they first instituted the higher security options.

If you keep responding to the emails, or, if in a hurry, call them up, they will reset your security questions.

Hi Laser I hope this problem gets resolved for you fairly quickly because I went thru something similar with my Guild Wars account a while back and I wanted to shoot someone even tho I had all the info they wanted onhand.

This is a perfect example of why I keep multiple copies of everything I get for all my games. Yes it seems like a pain in the hind quarters but it saved me a lot of frustration that you are going thru.

I have a copy of all my codes/security question answers for all my games in a folder on my online email account.

I saved a duplicate of that folder on my hard drive.

Another copy of that file is backed up onto a RW disc.

And I printed a copy of that folder which I keep in a $30 dollar portable safe/lockbox along with the flattened original game boxes and papers that came in the boxes.

I realize what I'm saying doesn't help you much right now but maybe it will give you an idea you can use in the future to prevent a similar occurance from happening.

And once more you have my sympathy and I hope this problem is resolved without any more frustration for you.

I got my security question wrong several times before I got the right combo. Either you messed up far more times than I did and locked yourself out, or you're mistaken about the "one time" thing. Just try it, it'll work out.

No Safe Deposit Box at the bank? Or you could just tatoo everything on your body like the guy in Memento.

I got stuck on this, contacted support, and followed the link they sent me. I added the needed pack shortly after that.

P.S. Sony says "Hi."

It's a habit I picked up in the military. Everything in at least triplicate to CYA.

As to the safe deposit box, I'm on a fixed income (disability) and can't afford that expense.

Tattoos are unrealistic because they are too expensive to keep updated as more codes get added, passwords/security questions get regularly changed, and personal info changes. Moved three times in past 7 years, switched banks and used different cards for payment.

This is what I just did. I am screwed I guess. I cant even log into the game, but sure enough I can log in here on the forums :/

I ran into this recently. You can call, but I just did it through the online customer service. They had to elevate it once, but the second support level I got to reset things for me just fine. I should also mention that while I think I had it lock once or twice, it was a temporary lock, so you can try more later. I'm not quite sure when it unlocks though.

Yes, the lock is temporary, in a day or so you'll be able to try again.

Why not just contact support like everyone is suggesting rather than moaning about how "screwed" you are?

Yeah, these security measures wouldn't have helped with Sony's little fiasco...

People moan for far more reasons then having sex. That aside...

I ran into this myself and I just filled out what I could in the email that support sent me. I had very little of the information that they asked for, but I provided all the Serial codes that I did have (from online purchases). The credit card I used when I created the account, I haven't had for 5 years now and to hell if I could remember the number of it. I most certainly didn't have the time cards that I originally used when I bought the game. And since both my brother and I bought the game, I didn't know which box belonged to who's account. It was kind of a mess, but I managed to get everything unlocked with support via email in only two communications.

Best of luck to you.

I had to go through this for seven accounts, so I tend to agree with the OP. Is hacking of City of Heroes accounts really that big a danger?

Forum rules prevent us from naming the other NCSoft games that had an issue about 2 years ago where peoples accounts were getting stolen because of a bug that gave people access to other players master accounts by repeatedly logging into their own master account.

All they had to do was login and out repeatedly into their own account using their own login and password and suddenly they'd find themselves in someone elses account.

That issue started a whole slew of security reforms in those games that were eventually applied here.

I had the same problem and pretty much decided they didn't want my money.

Why the heck would they want to make it hard for you to buy something?
you should only need minimal security to SELL STUFF!

Because gold-sellers stealing MMO accounts is a flat-out epidemic problem in the industry.

Because as angry as you are over this; and as many accounts they might lose over this; you would be worlds more angry if your account was hacked and people would be definitely more likely to cancel accounts if hacking was regarded as a general problem.

So, they either chose to lose some good will and accounts now, or, lose *a lot* of good will and accounts later.

It's because of things like hacking an account, using it to buy stuff and then they make money. When it is found out, not only does the NCSoft have to refund the fraudulent charges but if the bank was brought in by the customer then NCSoft can get fines and black marks.

Well, after needing to verify myself a few times now, all from my home, I can say that the security is ridiculous, and for multiple reasons, requiring me to complete this every time my IP address changes. My IP address changes every single time I turn on my computer, not to mention that eventually, someone else on my hosting service will get that IP address which makes the entire act of checking my IP address COMPLETELY USELESS!!!!!!!!

The only way that this could be of use is that if no one can EVER, EVER, EVER get the IP address that I was on when I had to answer the stupid questions and set it to allow another IP address.

They have set up something to make it more secure that cannot possibly make it more secure and there is nothing more irritating than making me do something that does not matter and telling me it is to make my account more secure when in fact it does absolutely nothing to make my account more secure. Obviously whoever thought this up hasn't got a clue how IP addresses are assigned.
