FEEBACK: Steampunk Back Options (Wings and Backpack)

Wings Suggestion:

Have the wind-up key twirl when wings are flapping. After all, the wind-up key in the Clockwork twirl.

Backpack Suggestions:

1. There are two bits of the backpack which aren't tintable. A brass section of the smokestack and a silvery section of the horizontal exhaust. Please make them tintable.

2. The backpack is called 'hammered brass' and has tarnish and grime on it. However, there is also an UM reflective surface on it which seems out of place. I suggest as the easy fix to remove the reflective surface. As the pie in the sky wish, I suggest two packs: One a very clean high-polished brass version, and the other the grimy matte hammered brass.

I would quite like a 'fixed state wing' more like a glider type thing, with a steamboy esque booster in the middle. That would have been my ideal steampunk backpiece, though the wings are lovely.

A seperate slider for the packback's scale size would be nice. It seems to scale in size with the chest slider and the physique slider. So if you want a bigger backpack, you have to go all chunky and huge chested... nice tech to do that however!

Backpack suggestion:

Add a version of the backpack that does not come pre-coloured and tints to the colours it is given, not to a browner shade of them. This is what the backpack looks when tinted white/white:

As you can see, I've selected a white primary and a white secondary from the colour picker, and as you can see, the backpack is not white. This is because its base texture is brown and grey, not white like other costume items. The only other place I've seen this tinting is in skin textures, where it's excusable because skin textures are supposed to be impossible to match to costume colours, so adding a tinted base texture is understandable. I see no reason to add a tinted base texture to the backpack.

What Sam said. A second version of the pack, or a drop-down option that allowed 'Original' or 'Tintable' would be ideal. Maybe even the options Zombie suggested.

Mens Hats

I would say colour lock the goggles on the Victorian Hat and allow players to colour the hair, and similar on the Classic Hat. Being unable to colour hair is a very limiting option.

Also, as someone who will be using the wings quite frequently on at least 3 characters.. after testing, I am realizing that, while I love their style, I do wish the wings themselves were slightly larger/longer and folded a bit more elegantly and tighter, not unlike the Tech wings.

Other then that, I say bravo! I have actually made wings like this in RL twice for costumes and I really love how these were done overall.

I think my overall impression of the Steampunk pack is "a really good first pass." Probably not what Cheryl Austin wants to hear, but it's a compliment, honest.

I'd like there to be two versions of the wings: large and small. I'm definitely going to use the current ones on a small character I'm going to make, but they look very much like the sort of thing Wile E. Coyote would get from Acme when you attach them to bigger toons. Both sizes ought to be fully colorable, so we can use them for things other than Steampunk-blah.

As Mega_Jamie mentioned, a fixed-wing (once deployed) look would be amazing, and completely different from every other wing in the game.

I found something else noteworthy now that I've had a chance to actually play around with the Steampunk gear: The baclpack seems to be set VERY far off the character's back. Have a look:

The backpack seems to be anchored at about the level of the kidneys, and there's a huge gap between the top of the pack and the actual back. At this point, I think I'd prefer the backpack to clip with my character's back a LOT more than it does now, so as to feel like it's flush against it, not held by one raised surface and hanging off at an angle.

This is actually a problem with shields, as well, I'm noticing, especially the Vanguard shield - prop costume pieces seem to be set with too cautious an offset off the character, ending up looking like they're floating on air.

How does it look when wearing a jacket?

I haven't checked, but I know for a fact that costume pieces can be placed at different offsets depending on what you're wearing under them. This is precisely what BABs did with Shields back when over half the glove options clipped through them. I imagine this would be a necessity for such backpacks, as well, only without BABs, it's unlikely to happen.

*edit*
Though, are you suggesting that the backpack was intended to go over the Steampunk jacket and as such never even aligned with a non-jacketed back? That would make sense...

Kinda seems like what I see with the crab spider backpack, which is also mounted real ugly-like.

It's possible that this is what's been keeping them from making more backpacks for SEVEN YEARS... Sorry, Caps Lock...

It's possible that this is precisely the problem with backpacks, that they don't align with the character's back very well. Having played with them a little big, it seems like the boiler backpack is anchored pretty low on the character's back, somewhere just above the bottom of the rib cage. What that means is that when the character slouches - and the Huge model kind of always is - it leaves a large gap between the upper back and the pack itself.

What's worse is that because the Huge model runs like an upright gorilla, all hunched over and crooked, the back is essentially curved forward, making a straight-surface pack stick out big-time. Also, because the character is so hunched-over, it shifts the pack really high up above the shoulders.

Personally, I'd like to see that backpack sunk at least half-way into the Huge model's back. There shouldn't be any danger of it sticking out the front, and that way when the character bends forward, there's always more backpack to emerge from the back, making it look like it's still flush.

This really isn't a question of precise, minute detailing, either. I can live with some clipping and inaccuracy that you have to zoom in all the way to see. But this problem is blatantly obvious from a distance and on the character's very silhouette. To me, it looks like the Steampunk boiler pack is is mounted to the character's back on a VERY offset brace, and that just looks... Awkward. If we ever get backpacks, I'd like to see them rendered much more flush against the character's back, and preferably anchored at the upper shoulders, rather than the lower back.
