The midlands - advice?

Completely unrelated to CoH....

I have been offered a promotion at work and it would mean moving from the sun swept south coast in Sussex to Birmingham (West Midlands, not Alabama).

I'd appreciate advice as to where to look as far as areas to live are concerned. I don't have to worry about children (youngest is 20, and at Uni) or partner (we split earlier this year), so a two bedroom place (either flat or house) is what I'm probably looking for. The company's office is in Great Charles Street, Birmingham, so will be looking to commute into the city as parking can be a pain.

Solihull appears to feature strongly from what I've seen so far on the internet.

Suggestions welcome!

Solihull is a nice place (In-laws live there) but can be pricey. There is a direct connection to Birmingham from Wolverhampton as well, plus the public transport network is good, so try not to rule out looking that side of the city either.

Harborne is nice, though can be a bit studenty & Edgbaston is very nice (and suitably expensive); of course you could always look at something within the city centre though you'll be paying a premium and obviously won't be able to drive anywhere during rush hour.

Avoid Ladywood. In the brief time I lived there we had a drugs raid and a drive-by shooting within a hundred yards of the house

Don't forget to consider train routes if you are going to be working in the city centre, some nice leafier areas if you do a rail commute and the station is on New Street

In all seriousness come take a look. I never in my wildest dreams imagined I'd emigrate to the Black Country but actually it's got a lot going for it and in good commuting distance to Brum and around it. The people are great for the most part and the beer is reasonable and then there's Edgbaston!

The only thing I would say is avoid the Hagley Road... in rushour it's one of Europe's most congested highways and when it's not congested the toms are out in force, just waiting to give you a round of applause.

Brum itself is fab and has a vibe all its own and well worth checking out.

Hmm, may need to see if one of them "learn a language" CD's is available to cope with the local dialect.

Many thanks for the suggestions, more places to consider added to the list!

This brings back memories of living in Tipton... Took me 6 months to realise what the lady in the corner shop was asking me!

"Ow am ya?" translated "How are you?"

Also I believe yours says "You don't want to be coming by here, else you're going to be late for your tea!" I think?
