I've had quite a few characters in the 6 or so years I've been involved with CoX, but there's only one that really deserves to be mentioned;
Jay Reynolds - The Crimson Archer
Jay was the second character I ever created in City of Heroes, and my first proper RP character. He arrived in Paragon City as redneck trailer trash from Tennessee, striving to be a hero on his own, but soon fell into good company with The Militia (although his first impressions left a lot to be desired!).
Over time Jay grew as a character and his back story grew with him. He acquired a mutant sister and an ex-military father, a taste for bourbon and a dislike of bullies, and he came out to his friends, becoming in time an openly gay hero and role model.
He sacrificed a lot over the years and his story was not always a comfortable or happy one. Disrupting the Tsoo plot to take over the gangs of Paragon City became a major part of his story, with Tub Chi taking a personal interest in his fall from grace. Jay started using metabolic enhancers to try and keep up with his super powered colleagues, leading to lapses in judgement and leadership. He lost an eye and witnessed the death of his cousin, the archery hero Redsight, while involved in the rescue attempt of kidnapped friend, Amber Banshee.
After losing his eye, he lost his confidence in his prowess as an archer and pushed himself too hard to get back in 'The Game', eventually accepting the help of his greatest enemy and receiving Tsoo tattoo magic to give him back his aim. But the magic was also designed to warp his mind, and bit-by-bit he alienated himself from his friends and team mates, culminating in his near murder of Hope Jensen, a young hero who was under his charge.
Jay's story ended sadly, after spending time in The Zig for his assault of Hope and quitting as a hero, Jay was eventually killed in a mid-air explosion aboard his private jet caused by the Tsoo leader, Tub Chi, who was eager to draw a line under the feud now that he had truly engineered the fall of The Crimson Archer.
But it wasnt all angst and sadness... Jay made many friends and had adventures which still make me smile. The cover photos for Paragon Pride magazine; the Crimson Archer action figure line he was forced to endorse and got teased about; His always missing dinner at White Vampyr & Britannic's apartment... So many good memories and so much laughter that even now makes me smile.
In many ways, the character wrote himself. Sometimes it felt more like he lived through me rather than I was making him up. I'm immensely proud of Jay because he felt alive and real to me, and I've been told by others that they felt the same way. Without CoX, he would never have existed and I would never have had the pleasure of his company or the thrill of his adventures.
I am extremely thankful to everyone that has ever worked on City of Heroes for giving me the chance to know Jay, and I hope that, one day, I can find myself playing him again... although maybe a Jay from happier times! -
In the words of Patrick Stewart... "This is going to be EPIC!!"
-
What exactly does this have to do with the Player Meet??? :P
-
That's great, Ransim... It'll be great to continue to use the site to host characters (old & new) for ongoing forum rp.
-
Same here. I'm going to try and find a baby sitter so that I can at least come out to raise a glass on Friday night.
-
I'm certainly going to continue paying for the webspace which The Militia forum is currently hosted on and I will continue to administrate/maintain it, so it's not going anywhere in the foreseeable future. I certainly hope that people will continue to write stories and RP plots on the forum, even after the lights have been turned off over Paragon City.
EDIT: I'm sure there are other forums and webspaces where other groups do their RP, so there should be plenty of space for us all! -
Yes, we should still get together and raise a glass to the game that brought us together.

As much as I hate to be devil's advocate, but do we really need The Joker in the next Batman: Arkham Whatever game?
Don't get me wrong, I love Mark Hamill's interpretation of the character and he really is my number one choice for being Mr. J, but I'd kinda like the character to be rested for a bit... :P -
Hmm.. Have to decide now whether to create a Carnie-verse character or stick with my hero for the crossover. :?
-
In my head, Jay Reynolds (the original Crimson Archer) has always sounded like Nathan Fillion, albeit with a slightly more exaggerated southern accent!
Jacqueline Lyndon, aka Wild Cat, would sound like Eliza Dusku.
Aurelian, my Roman God-Avatar, would have either Dolph Lungren or Ray Stephenson's voice, I reckon.

Quote:Stop bringing logic and information into this, G. You're derailing a perfectly good rant thread! For those who are complaining about it, they can do a *specific* EU competition...
Of course it would still screw over the oceanic players... because they have their *own* competition rulings...
And for those who say "But big international companies do it...", i think you will find that there are still a few countries that are excluded, and if you do win, its actually the "local branch" of the company that actually awards the prize if anything, and not the "head office" branch, even then more than likely, they will run several competitions for it, and have each region hosting their own...
Just doing a quick search for an EU gaming website i have found this:
Eurogamer for example with their VIP trip to Wales Rally competition, it is only open to players from UK, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Benelux, Italy, Spain and Czech Republic
Gamespot: Their competitions are only valid for certain countries... Gamespot UK for UK players, Australia for Australian players...
Of course, the whole MMORPG.com idea was probably *their own* idea, and NCsoft/Paragon Studios just went "yeah, we will go for it"... -
I normally shave my head, but I would grow hair inorder to allow Posi to cut it if I won this prize!
...but, as I am another EU player and therefore locked out of this competition, it's a moot point. :P -
Maybe they've become aware of our world through some Portal Corp scientists stumbling into theirs, and think that the citizens of our world look like they could use some fun!
I mean, we've been invaded and attacked so many times (maybe they also think we're oppressed by the superhero types), who could possibly be happy in a world like that?! So, they look to take the grumpy versions of people back to their world and introduce them to REAL fun, while their carnival replacements work make our world more like theirs.
What would help to advance their plans? Depending on whether they have their own portal technology, they might want to get hold of Portal Corp technicians and managers to arrange for the large scale transfer of the CarnivalCapital to Paragon.
Presumably they'd target those who can either advance or prevent their plans. Psychics are a given due to their increasing the power of the carnival, but who else? Politicans perhaps? Celebrities who have the ear of the people and can put across a message of fun and other propoganda?
Plenty to think about. -
Yep, officially LOVE that idea, Kiken!
Might make for an interesting finale too, when the Carnival-Captial crosses over onto Primal Earth and all (circus themed) hell breaks loose!! -
Am I right in assuming, using the Primal Earth Carnival as the base model here, that the Carnival-Earth society would be a Matriarchy? Perhaps even a Psychiarchy (society where status is based on level of psychic abilities)?
It might also be quite cool if their are Captial Carnivals, similar to Captial Cities, and the further out from them you get the less circus-y everything feels. Primal Earth characters crossing over into Carnival Earth might notice less differences until they start to travel closer to the Capitals. -
*nods* That was pretty much what I was thinking. Finding burnt out circus tents and broken masks could be a fun way figure out someone is targetting the Carnival of Shadows, but not why.
One additional aside, seeing as the Carnival is very much connected via their masks, I can see a world ruled by them as being quite faceless. By that I mean that everyone in their world is forced to wear masks, which prevents anyone from knowing who is part of the Carnival and who is part of the Audience. -
One question I have is what reaction to you envisage coming from the Carnival on our Earth? Would they be working with this alternative Carnival or would they be opposed to them and involved in a kind of Circus themed Civil War?

Private Jet Crash Wreckage Found, Fuels more questions
Wreckage found by the crew of a Canadian fishing boat has been confirmed as belonging to a private jet previously thought to have crashed en route to Beijing.
The private jet, a Gulfstream IV Private Business Jet, was travelling from Providence, RI to Beijing when contact was lost with air traffic controllers about 500 miles (800 kilometers) west of San Fransisco.
Official search teams have been combing the area between San Fransisco and Honolulu, Hawaii hoping to find some sign of the crashed jet, with no success. However, a fishing boat out of Vancouver, British Columbia found the debris while fishing in the North Pacific.
“We were dredging as usual,” said Michel Rosse, Captain of the Morning Ray, “when suddenly our nets snagged on something in the water. When we brought it aboard we realised it was some part of an airplane.”
The jet was said to be carrying Jamie "Jay" Reynolds, CEO of RCI and formerly the hero 'The Crimson Archer', along with 2 crew members when it crashed. According to Brigitte Barrand, Reynolds Concept & Innovations company spokeswoman, there was no reason for the private jet chartered by the company to be so far off course.
Similarly, a source within the air traffic authority is reported to have said that there is no logical reason why the wreckage should have been discovered so far north of the expected flight plan.
As yet no bodies have been found. -
Looks like I won't be able to make it to the meet up until Sunday morning, however I'm hoping to make it into town for beer 'n' hugs on Friday evening.
Let me know where you decide to install yourselves! -
Great work, Bunny, and loving the redesign!!
As for ideas for the next issue, I'd love to see one which deals with natural/unpowered heroes (something close to my own heart) but I'd also like to see one that looks at British heroes in Paragon or heroes inspired by Britain. Could be fun, I think. -

Private Jet Lost Over Pacific Ocean
A Gulfstream IV Private Business Jet carrying an undisclosed number of passengers from Providence, RI to Beijing has vanished over the Pacific Ocean after flying into turbulence, air authority officials say.
The pilot of the Private Jet sent a message to air traffic control reporting electrical problems soon after take-off, and this followed by an automatic message reporting a short circuit at 0214 EDT, four hours after leaving Providence, RI. It may have been damaged by lightning.
It was well over the ocean when it was lost, making search planes' task more difficult.
A spokesmen for the airport said the chances of finding survivors were "very small".

Ex-Hero Feared Dead In Jet Crash
A Private Jet travelling from Providence, RI to Beijing lost contact with air traffic controllers over the Pacific Ocean, officials said on Monday.
The jet, a Gulfstream IV, was said to be carrying Jamie "Jay" Reynolds, CEO of RCI, and 2 crew members, Brigitte Barrand, Reynolds Concept & Innovations company spokeswoman said today. The flight left Providence, RI on Sunday at 10 p.m. local time.
Jay Reynolds, formerly known as The Crimson Archer, has recently become CEO of Reynolds Concepts & Innovations, a technology company created by his father. He was said to have been travelling to Beijing for a meeting to discuss new business opportunities in the region.
The communication was lost with the plane about 500 miles (800 kilometers) west of San Fransisco, an air traffic control spokesman said.
The search would begin Monday morning , he added, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with air force policy.
A police official said the weather was clear in the coastal area on the night of the disappearance and into this morning. -

There's still a few of us who remember you, Lunk!

Derren Browns - Any mesmorist (used by British characters)
Example: "I bloody hate them Ritki Derren Browns keep putting me to sleep!"
