Buff the strongest or the weakest?

The difference on teams between players who move to the right spots in order to help the buffers and teams that just spread all out and move out of range of buffing for no reason is remarkable. You can help the buffers (and therefore the whole team/league) out a lot by positioning yourself for the buffs well.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.

whats your philosophy?
I'd rather have everyone live. Then I can save my resurrect instead of using it. buffing the lowbie makes them fight even harder cause their watching their damage numbers go up so fast from Fort. I know I want to get as many pop shots off once I hit.

I use a simple system of priorities when buffing:

1.) If it helps the person die less (Sonic, FF, Fortitude is a unique snowflake), I default to the aggro sponge on the team.

2.) If it increases killing speed (Fortitude, things that look, smell, and taste like Fortitude, but do not necessarily quack), it goes on the big damage dealer.

3.) If it clears Mez (Clear Mind, O2 Boost when everything is dead and you've run out of all the better things to do), it goes on the quirky Blaster who thought that an Acrobat was some sort of winged rodent.

I'm the opposite. Death of a team-mate = Power Boosted Vengie for all. So I'm not adverse to seeing someone keel over for the Greater Good ("The Greater Good")

Fort I tend to stick on the Crabbies, Domis and Blasters. AB I tend to stick on the Warshade, Brutes and Corruptors.

But that's an incredibly rough rule of thumb which is subject to change according to what powersets people have, what we're fighting and what they are doing (a Scrapper standing toe-to-toe with a Trial AV without other support will also get Fort, the Trapper, Plant Domi or Illusion Controller dealing with the adds may end up with AB on them so they can get their distracting pets up more often).

Tanks only get buffed if they seem to need it (ie are struggling to stay alive). This is more because I play a Plant/Emp and quite often there's plenty of people buffing Mr Tank anyway.

That phrase may be true sometimes in real life but in this game that makes no sense. The actions of one player can carry entire teams and it happens more regularly as you get closer to the endgame.

A specific example would be the sidekicking system moving away from allowing a five level spread. The devs had to design an entirely new system to even things out because its so obvious that all it takes is one overbuffed character to wipe most things the game lets them design.

If a player is underperforming I think its important that they know it and learn how to be self sufficient. I would rather buff someone who knows what they are doing and can make the most out of my investment in them.

Easy answer for me. I try and put my buff where they make the team move along the fastest.

Sometimes the SS/Fire Brute doesn't need a damage buff. Gasp! Give it to another person on the team to raise their damage, and that character will add APPRECIABLY more damage per buff than the single flaming nightmare Brute with all others being lackluster.

If the tanker is cruising along fine with just a heal now and again and the Dominator next to him could become Perma with a single application of Fortitude, guess which one I'm going to give Fortitude.

One particular character dying so much that you have to constantly rez him? That's stealing time you could be using more wisely. Buff him up, tell him to hang back, and keep moving.

This isn't to say that you should always give your buffs to the weakest/strongest character on the team, of course. Just use them where they make the biggest difference for the while group.

Too many alts to list.

COMING SOON: This question will be mostly irrelevant.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Aye - my FF Defender is still passed out from disbelief from the news about the newish team buffing changes.

New answer: I buff everyone... at once!
