fire/fire/fire build advice

Trying to figure out a good direction to go for my recently turned 50 fire/fire/fire tank. I'd like to stick to the less expensive route, but if there's some good stuff worth spending the money for, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Current build (don't have Mids, prefer to build little by little based on availability, drops, and current market, and ask advice rather than plan the whole thing out in advance.)

Basically have all the primary/secondary powers except [Taunt], Fighting pool for [Tough], Speed pool, and [Char], [Melt Armor], and [Fireball] from Pyre.

I'd rather not respec, but it's not out of the question. I easily could lose [Breath of Fire] and could possibly lose [Temperature Protection]. And I could eventually respec to re-order slots if needed.

Current Alpha: Cardial uncommon

Current S/L resist: 71%, E/NE 50%, Cold 30%

Thanks for any advice!

What are you trying to do with your Tanker? Farm? Play general content and tank occasionally? Either way, your defense should be higher. The defense you choose would depend on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. You will definitely need Weave, and Combat Jumping is a good toggle that costs almost no endurance.

Every character should have received a free respec for Issue 20's release, and we get another one on April 28th or so for the anniversary celebration. All you have to do when you're ready is type "/respec".

I'd just rather not deal with the hassle of /respeccing, I know I used one to respec into inherent fitness, but not sure if it was before or after the most recent freespec.

I'm using him to play general content and tank occasionally. Going cardiac alpha, I could add a couple more toggles, but is the defense given by [Combat Jumping] better than the slow resistance given by [Temperature Protection]? I suppose that answer depends on what I'm fighting at the moment, though.

It sounds like you don't want to put any effort into your character. It takes less than 15 minutes to do a respec if you have a build you can quickly look at. Slotting it takes a while, but it is worth the effort.

Even the inexpensive invention sets can make your character twice as survivable. Investing between 500 million and 1 billion can likely make your character almost ten times as survivable.

Your current build is basically random junk thrown together. You don't have enough slots in some powers and you have too many slots in other powers for an IO set build to be done well. The only thing worth saving is the Steadfast Protection knockback protection.

If you don't want to put a reasonable effort into making your character better, I don't want to spend more effort trying to help you. Good luck and have fun.

Syntax, your reply came off as kind of mean, not everyone is a master of Mids, or wants to master it in order to have fun in COH. (I happen to love Mids myself.)

Bubba, I'm not a king of fire tanking by any means, but I am gonna post a Fire/Fire tank just to give you an idea of some options. I went Mu instead of Fire as it gave me what I wanted in two power choices instead of three, giving me one more slot for another power.

This is not the perfect tank build, just some ideas, I know there is probably plenty wrong with it, but I believe it softcaps Smashing, Lethal, and probably also Energy/Negative with one small purple luck. I chose full invisibility/sprint to allow a tank to run up and position himself just where he wants to without aggroing most enemies before he cuts loose with his alpha (since Stealth also adds almost four percent defense).

I usually post the short form post, but I'm gonna post the long form here as I'm not sure if it might not help you more since you aren't that into mids. Just use the parts that do help you and ignore the rest.

And in my opinion, Combat Jumping's defense is better than the 20% slow resist in Temp. Protection.

Some of these can be expensive but if you don't have a lot of inf, do five tip missions a day on every character you can manage to and you'll soon have just about any IO you want.

PS If you don't love stealth, you can substitute Maneuvers.

I have no problem helping someone make a build if they show an effort and desire to have a good character. He refuses to use a free respec when we have another coming in a week because it is too much of a "hassle". If you aren't even willing to spend a few minutes to move powers and slots around, why bother spending hours crafting IO sets and slotting them? That just seems lazy to me.

It was nice of you to post a build, but he can't use it without respeccing.

I think you are coming across as harsh. The OP doesnt have mids. He has used Titan Sentinel to get his ingame build on the forums. He said he'd rather not respec but its not out of the question. He doesn't know if he has recently used his freespec and we do not know if he has anymore.

I will suggest to the OP to look into the guide section, not to obtain a complete build but to take a look at how individual powers have been slotted and to see if the number of slots in a power equals his enough to slot the same way.

If I posted my build it would mean a respec.

Bubbawheat are you having fun with that Firetank?

A few things:

Thanks to Jericho for the build, I'll check through it and see what looks good to try and fit into my build.

Syntax: I do think you were being a little harsh, but you did make me think about what I really wanted as far as advice goes. Yes my current build is very random - it's a starting point. Also, I'd rather not respec "right now" because I don't want to create a bunch of empty slots in preparation for "my new build" which I plan on building for a good long while. (P.S. we're getting another freespec in a week? Didn't realize that.)

I realize that what I'm looking for is advice on what sets I should start getting that I can slot right away and start getting use out of immediately (especially if they're inexpensive), but will also be needed in a better all-around build. I'm looking to improve my survivability, and if possible increase damage slightly.

New Dawn: Yes, I'm having fun. This is my third fire/fire to hit 50 (previous being a Brute and a Blaster, with a Dom closing in at 43) and it's currently the character that's getting the most playtime - I'm a recovering alt-o-holic, it's been 105 days since I rolled a new alt (number is made up, but probably not too far from reality).

(shrug)

Your communication skills stink, so people are gonna start ignoring you.

Learn.

That said, I hate doing respecs, they are not fun for me. I will play suboptimal characters rather than suffer the respec process.

And ya know what? I have a blast with them. My elec/elec scrap with flight is a prime example.

I just LOVE that toon.

I post on these forums to help others with their builds because making builds is complex and ruining a build is too easy. It can take an hour or more to craft and slot IOs for an entire build. It only takes about 10 minutes to respec. It takes less than 5 minutes for most people to log in to the game and see if they have a respec available. I have spent hours posting to try to help other people with their builds, but the three of you think it is unreasonable for me to expect someone I'm trying to help to spend 5 or 15 minutes on their own character?

Even if you don't have the INF to invest in IOs, you can slot a build with SOs. It won't hurt your performance much if the slots are moved around, but you will be ready for the IO sets and you won't be wasting the free respec that was granted for I20. Basically, there are no good excuses for not respeccing before the next free one comes if you have one available now. Checking to see if you have one only requires you to log in to the game. It will say if you have an unclaimed respec available, or you can type "/respec" and click back or cancel to not use it right away.

My communication skills are fine. My communication style is what you have a problem with. I am blunt and to the point and I don't tolerate a lack of effort on other people's part when I am putting forth effort to help them. If you don't like that and you want a carebear-loving forum, try the Hello Kitty Online Adventures forum.

From the OPs post I could of assumed he plays on the Mac and so doesn't run Mids. There is a alternative on the internet that most people don't use and so it maybe percieved as something that may not get optimum response. The OP has had to use Titan Sentinel to show actual build, I've never obtained a build from it, but it may allow mac users give us a build in a program that most of us use, which is something. Whether the build is good or not, whether anything is good enough or not is a matter, of opinion. So what you may think is a half attempt maybe not be and in this case is simply just how it is ingame. The OP has fun with his build and so the build is fine. Just like the OP 'maybe' I didn't know that there is a freespec coming until you said.

I understand that some people word things like they expect everything on a plate, or make no solid attempt when they can use Mids. You may help someone and never ever know whether or not they returned to the thread. It may mean that you've wasted your time. You like me try to avoid that and as a result I sometimes only like to give up my time when I see the OP replying to other peoples advice, often adapting their builds from the advice given by others. It is then, that if I can see something further to add, I'll add. At times I am too short on time.

I don't have a problem with you using English. What I think perhaps is that, from my viewpoint I think you are being too quick to judge a person. Some of us read the posts and try to take in the words, without adding words nor taking away words. There is what I can truly know from it and what I just don't truly know.

Alot of people have concept builds, I do, they may not be considered great but they are paid for and dearly loved by the people who have them. The people in this game come from all walks of life. A player could just have one arm or something personal going on in their lives and need the game for some sort of escapism. It's not carebear like to be forgiving with people who can't live up to your standards its being human like.

Your post makes it sound like you think I had an issue with his build or how he posted it on the forums. I want to be clear and state that I do not have an issue with it. If he had responded to my first post with his goals for the character, I would have made a build or assisted in helping him make one.

I do have an issue with this:

In my post before that, I said we were given a free respec for Issue 20 (which was on April 5th) and we will get another on or around April 28th. Without even bothering to see if he had a free respec available, he dismissed the idea of using either one to improve his character.

At that point, I don't even want to try to come up with a build if I'm restricted to not moving slots around. The likelihood of it turning out to a quality that I would be satisfied with is very low. It would likely be a waste of INF to put together when a better build could be done so easily by moving a few slots around. It takes much longer to craft IOs than it does to /respec and fill everything with temporary SOs.

And yet you continue to spend much more than 5-10 minutes reading and responding to this thread. If you don't want to help, that's fine, but I'd rather not sit here and discuss over and over about why you don't want to help me.

Nothing decisive so far aye? OP has not said that a respec is out of the question.

Harsh and rash given all the OP has given you to go on and make judgement about.

You again Mr Syntax:

So far not anywhere has Bubbawheat said that he flat out refuses to use a freespec. He just said he'd rather not.

You said his build was random junk thrown together but nevermind my issue is with you acting like Bubbawheat flat out refuses to respec into anything, which as far as I can tell, he hasn't.

We all have one of them weeks so don't worry.

Bubbawheat are you stern about your power choices? I for one wouldn't be without taunt cos tanking AVs with a Firetank and I don't care which AV it is it was never out of the question. Melt Armour is long recharge, end heavy, pants solo and over time not as good as Assault which also offers protection to taunt and placate but nevermind that, what I am saying is I would have something else from the epic to get fireball later with.

Also my aim with my Firetank would be to live long enough for RotP to recharge as she is so conceptually Phoenix like, this means not being the strongest Firetank but being fun. About yours? Would you prefer yours to be all defensive like because Jericho has made a good start and if you'd prefer to stay with your epic I could adapt that start and change it to match your build more. This would only take me 5 mins probably.

I'd heard [Melt Armor] was pretty good... in Thermal, but I didn't realize it wasn't all that great as a tanker. Like I said in the original post, I'm pretty happy with everything except [Breath of Fire], [Temperature Protection], and apparently now [Melt Armor].

As far as what I'm looking for, I don't need tons of survivability, but I'd like to improve survivability and wouldn't mind also improving offense.

Bubba, I have a decent Fire/Fire guide that you can find in my sig if you'd like more info and builds to play with. They are Mid's builds, just so you know, but you can look at them in the thread without Mid's (just a little harder to read, I think). My builds I have in there are meant to be economical, but good builds. Someone recently requested that I make a more expensive one, so I'm tweaking that now to put in there.

Regardless of what build you go with, do plan something overall and respec into that build... you can fill in gaps with SOs for now without spending too much cash. Anything else will just be more difficult and require more respecing: better to go in with slots placed where you know you want them, and go from there. You can also have a tray of ten IOs that you know you really want to place when you go in to the respec to the new build, to get yourself started.

Overall goals for Fiery Aura that helps are more defense (and damage you can outlast), more recharge, more HP. Probably in that order, and also with enough recovery to not get an empty blue bar before Consume recharges again. The type of defense you go for is kind of up to you... getting a lot of S/L defense is one approach that works well. I also like my defense build that covers the more exotic damage you can cover, like Psi. Either one can work, just get at least to 20% to really notice a difference for the type of damage you are facing. As another poster in that thread noted recently (I think it was Fulmens), getting to about 32% defense is pretty nice, as you can then soft cap to that defense type with one small purple.

Last but not least, Melt Armor isn't fantatastic, but it's okay. I prefer it over the constant End Drain of the Leadership toggles, and it does have a long duration. One thing in its defense is that it can go with your other -res sources, like Bruising. Even the Incarnate Interface power if you have it.

I would also highly recommend Taunt on any tank. You can see that debated in my guide as well, if you're up in the air about it.

Defense numbers you should shoot for rank as follows: 45% (softcap), 32.5% (one small purple will softcap), 20% (two small purples will softcap), and 12.5% (three small purples will softcap). I have several Brutes who have builds sitting at 20% defense to all damage types (except Toxic) including Psionic, and it is very nice and easily attainable. Especially for a tank.

However, that is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Here I've 'used what you got' Bubbawheat just to finish it, then in the next build I've changed it a bit for something that looks a bit more right that you might be able to get done in as little as one or two respecs (you should have 10 IOs in tray and so not throw away any costly IOs.)

I fell asleep between the two whilst doing it so forgot exactly where I was but its basically using what you've had mostly and getting you to 20% melee def. Melee def is alright if you herd/centre fast and kill fast.

You could aim for 45% S/L def or something else but it should get more and more expensive. I've respeced out a complete build for something completely different before and in order not to throw IO sets away I spent 5 respecs.

Looking at some of the builds and focusing on melee damage at the moment.

Common choices include:
Kinetic Combat - Caps at 35, Health +1.5%, S/L /M Defense - 4 slots
Mako's Bite - Caps at 50, 3% Damage, 1.5% Health, Ranged Defense - 6 slots - avg 10M crafted (and I currently own 3)
Smashing Haymaker - Caps at 35, Health +1%, M Defense 1% - 4 slots - avg 5M crafted
Touch of Death - Caps at 40, Health +1.5%, Damage 2.5%, M Def 3.75% - 6 slots - avg 15-20+M crafted (currently own 2)
Crushing Impact - Caps at 50, Health +1%, Recharge +5%, Psi Resist +2.5% - 6 slots - avg 3-5M crafted (currently own 2)

From there, looking at 1 Mako 6 slotted, 1 Touch of Death 6 slotted, 2 Crushing Impact 6 slotted.
Would gain: 5% Health, 5.5% Damage, slight various Def/Psi resist.

Keep in mind that it's more efficient to build for positional defense OR typed defense, but not both, though you will automatically get some of the other kind.

Personally, I prefer typed defense, but if you want to go the positional defense route, stay away from primarily typed defense sets like Kinetic Combat and Smashing Haymaker. The bang-for-buck for those sets just isn't there compared to Mako's, ToD or Scirocco's Dervish.

Build update and bump so I can find this easier. Current plan is to fully slot everything that's not changing, that way respeccing will be much easier. Definitely giving up [Breath of Fire] and [Temperature Protection] to pick up [Weave] and... not sure.

Also wondering if it's much of a difference for [Healing Flames] to be slotted with 5 Doctored Wounds and a heal instead of heal/end to get that extra little bit of healing instead of 1.26% Psi resist. Suppose maybe every little bit of Psi resist helps? Where an extra 10-20 points of healing might not? Especially if I go at least 2x Crushing Impacts and at least 1x Impervium Armors?

I've been working on a Fire/Fire/Pyre build, too. Costs are running a bit high for my liking, but I really wanted to get within one small purple of softcap for s/l damage and two for e/n. It has over 2500hp after accolades and pretty decent recharge. Not happy with the accuracy of Scorch & Incinerate. I might end up skipping Pyre for Leadership...

Yet another update, finally decided to try my own hand at planning a build. I'm not sure how well I did on this try. It seems to do several things moderately well, there's some good +damage, +recharge, and a bit of +melee defense and +Psi def/res too. I think this is a good start, and I'm already maybe 1/3 of the way there as far as what I currently have. Am open to suggestions on how to tweak this, or if there's anything I'm overlooking that would be a great help.

Anything? Is this recent one ok for a general moderate boost to defense, damage, and recharge? Is there something I could be doing better? Currently about halfway done, hardest thing to get at the moment is the Obliterations. Thanks in advance.
