Cannot Start up game

Hopefully this is the correct spot for this. . .I recently downloaded the update and every time I try to start up CoH i get this message:

CityOfHeroes.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

Anybody know how to fix this so i can play?

I've got the same error as well, any suggestions that don't involve SP3. I refuse to use it because every time I've tried in the past its allowed viruses to override my computer before I could even install the anti-virus.

I'm having the same problem. Updating to SP3 on my XPpro install destabilises several of my drivers, so that's out of the question for me. Anyone else receiving that error message?

Sorry but I believe SP3 is now mandatory.

Just as at some point in the past Win 98 SE support went away, XP support now requires SP3.

You're doing it wrong.

Are you running XP (as implied by your post) or Vista/7?

You can go back to the old updater (for now) (if it's possible to roll back to it).

Getting the same using win 7

Two things to try. First, run the updater/launcher As Administrator. If that doesn't help then what I found pre-launcher is that initially I had to copy the updater + cityofheroes.exe to my desktop (or anywhere that isn't the game folder), run the updater, let it do its stuff and then I could quite happily run it from the game folder again - something to do with how the updater locks the executable and then can't write to it when it needs to update it.

I also am on Windows XP SP2. Upgrading to SP3 corrupts a driver of my laptop, which corrupts the OS, I have to restore the OS from the recovery partition when this happens, which restores back to SP2, etc etc.

I am not destroying my OS again for the game. Can someone post detailed instructions of removing the NCSoft Launcher and instructing Cohupdater.exe to use the old launcher instead of queue the NCSoftLauncher to launch?

I can't afford to buy a gaming computer(or any really) with Windows7 right now just to continue playing. I am gonna be really pissed if this needless crap phase-out is what makes me leave CoH indefinitely(ie: when I can get a new PC).

ISSUE 20: INCARNATES/NCSOFT LAUNCHER OFFICIALLY=DOOM.

(From what I can get from that error message it appears the game won't run with XP2 because it's unable to tap into my processor data with it's current coding. I don't see how it's any of an MMOs business what type/power/speed processor I have anyway. maybe with their Techhelp exe they give when players have problems with the software. But it certainly doesn't seem required to me for the game itself.)

Your issue is related to all the "security" measures the crap that windows vista/7 comes with. The Spad's post above my last one give's instructions that I believe will fix your issue. (Copying and pasting the files he named from C:\program files(x86)\ to the desktop and clicking them there)

It'd be far faster to right click on the City of Heroes folder -> Properties -> Security tab -> Advanced -> Owner tab -> Edit -> (UAC prompt) -> Click on your user name (Or 'Other users or groups...' if it's not listed, then type your user name -> 'Check Name' -> OK), check Replace owner on subcontainer and objects -> OK -> OK -> OK, and you should be done- and now the permissions are appropriately setup, without having to copy several GIGABYTES of data.

NCLauncher really should check the permissions itself and adjust them automatigcally, I've no idea why they'd try the switch before they had it fully supported and all that goodness.

That's simply silly. The game uses GetLogicalProcessorInformation() to find out information about the processors/cores makeup of your computer, i.e. which cores are on a single processor, how many processors you have, and how many cores- this is important to know for threading, and making the game FASTER and MORE RESPONSIVE. It's not like they're looking through your address book, no need for totally misplaced paranoia.

Sounds like the driver is 100% to blame, not in any way NCSoft/NCLauncher/CoH. I'd suggest uninstalling the driver, then trying to upgrade to SP3, and then finding the latest version of the driver (not some crappy ancient one that came with the system), and installing THAT. If it's for an unused piece of hardware... just leave it gone.

Cohupdater.exe IS the old launcher! Just make a shortcut to it, or use your old shortcut to it, you can have both installed at once (hell, I still just use the old updater since it's already on my taskbar and I've been too lazy to switch it).

And that's not like it's going to fix your problem... Your problem is:
1) A crappy driver (update it!)
2) Refusing to upgrade to a 3 year old Service Pack (FYI, even Microsoft has already dropped support for you!)
3) Those damn space pirates.
4) ???
5) Profit!

Run:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\city of heroes\cohupdater.eu.exe" -launcher -auth 64.25.36.15
or
Code:
"C:\Program Files\city of heroes\cohupdater.exe" -launcher -auth 64.25.36.15
for the EU or US versions of the game respectively (obviously change the path if you haven't installed CoX to "C:\program files\city of heroes\").

Can't verify that the US version uses the same auth server (or even that you need to specify it), so it might not work but someone with a working US version and a copy of Process Explorer should be able to get the right authserver IP

May break at any time. I take no responsibility for anything, etc.

I'll try it for US and let you know!

The US updater needs no special flags, and, still works perfectly fine. AFAIK, that -auth parameter tells the game to use the EU authenticator server instead of the US one. A shortcut created to launch CoH back in i6* would work just as well now.

* And probably i0, but I wasn't around back then so can't say for 100% sure.

Every time I try to run the updater it wants to repair and then it closes because it has encountered an error.

Edit: and I mean the old updater not the new NCSoft Launcher

hey thanks Kitsune goin to try that now. Sorry about my "testy" posts....just so dang fustrating...let ya know if this works

You say that, but if I run ye olde EU updater without specifying the auth server I get a serverlist with "Unnamed" in it and nothing else (and a Failed to Connect to DB Server error if I trying to connect to it) - it was working fine pre-i20 update

Edit: Actually, it's sort of my fault, but still a change in behaviour. If it run the update without any switches, it works, but if I run it with -launcher than I have to specify an auth server to avoid the "unnamed" server. Still, it worked yesterday with -launcher and without -auth. Serves me right for all the unsupported fiddling really
