Cannot Start up game
-launcher is a special flag we're not supposed to be manually using And I'm fairly certain it provides no benefits from repeated use...

Like I said, serves me right and at some point I'll get around to using the launcher but right now it's more trouble than its worth until I find a way to get Steam to use it and track the game properly.

Kitsune I did what you said in your post changing the user name and it didn't work. Still getting the same message:
Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NCsoft\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe' is denied.
any other ideas?
That's simply silly. The game uses GetLogicalProcessorInformation() to find out information about the processors/cores makeup of your computer, i.e. which cores are on a single processor, how many processors you have, and how many cores- this is important to know for threading, and making the game FASTER and MORE RESPONSIVE. It's not like they're looking through your address book, no need for totally misplaced paranoia.

Sounds like the driver is 100% to blame, not in any way NCSoft/NCLauncher/CoH. I'd suggest uninstalling the driver, then trying to upgrade to SP3, and then finding the latest version of the driver (not some crappy ancient one that came with the system), and installing THAT. If it's for an unused piece of hardware... just leave it gone.

Cohupdater.exe IS the old launcher! Just make a shortcut to it, or use your old shortcut to it, you can have both installed at once
|
And that's not like it's going to fix your problem... Your problem is:
1) A crappy driver (update it!) 2) Refusing to upgrade to a 3 year old Service Pack (FYI, even Microsoft has already dropped support for you!) 3) Those damn space pirates. 4) ??? 5) Profit! |

You should then be able to delete the copies on your desktop (along with any other temporary files it's created) and run the updater/launcher again as normal. It seems to be some specific to 64-bit windows 7 (and possibly Vista) as I came across it when I did a clean install during i19 a few months back.

I found the old updater. After installing the NCcrapware it makes cohupdater.exe summon the nclauncher, and creates another exe in the C:\program files directory named old.cohupdater.exe. I have it running now. Strange how I downloaded/applied Issue 20 with the NCLauncher and the old launcher is now "fixing files" . I'll edit this post/reply to the thread when it finishes patching with whether or not the game can now launch.
Edit: The old launcher gives the same error when you accept the EULA to start the game, the XP breaking code was added to the game itself, not that NCLauncher.
Issue 20=worst one I've seen released. There are like 5 thread's on this issue, and everyone with the error has a reason they have SP2 instead of 3. Hopefully this will be changed, otherwise I'm locked out of CoH for a minimum of 5-6 months.

sounds like nobody wants to except the fact that this "New" download launcher is flawed! I'm tired of trying to "get around it" with all these fixes when it should be ncsoft's problem. They designed it, face it, its not worth all the hassel unless you all just don't care about keeping your players playing.....I'm Done! Maybe i can get a refund on my 3 months left to play...yea right.
*sigh* so what the heck changed that made the game so different from yesterday? I had to do so much to get the new launcher to work now i'm positive that after xp is done updating i'm going to have hours of work to do on drivers that are at odds with the service packs I just really want some justification, a reason for all these flashy new hoops i gotta jump through to play the game that was running perfectly fine yesterday........
*edit* I mean I don't hate the new I20 stuff i love the alphas and what not its all the computer issues that are just makin me want to rip my hair out
and than go out to the old quarry and dig up some ore than smelt it down into a nice state, let it get to a nice heat than go out and chop down a tree and carve a nice long pole. Than go back and forge out about a 2 foot block of the steel. Than bolt a couple fasteners to the pole and take it out to my grand dads shop and grind a nice blade on it, hitch a ride from him back into town and than hack my computer into a billion pieces
From what I've read in the various posts about this issue apparently xp sp3 is now required because as of i20 the game supports the use of multi-core CPUs. In order to activate them it has to scan your pc and determine how many cpu cores you actually have.
The command to analyze your processor isn't supported below xp sp3, so it now gives us that error and kicks us out.
For the first time since 2005 I have spent the past 4 hours backing up my harddrive, and my PC is attempting to install servicepack3 as I type this(from my blackberry, which isn't too fun lol)

Edit: Actually, it's sort of my fault, but still a change in behaviour. If it run the update without any switches, it works, but if I run it with -launcher than I have to specify an auth server to avoid the "unnamed" server. Still, it worked yesterday with -launcher and without -auth. Serves me right for all the unsupported fiddling really
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
