Influence is Money

Money is any object or record, that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context.[1][2][3] The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange; a unit of account; a store of value; and, occasionally in the past, a standard of deferred payment.[4][5] Any kind of object or secure verifiable record that fulfills these functions can serve as money.

Seems like it's money to me

I'll give a recent example. Incarnate conversions (component to abilities, etc). Why would money need to be spent to receive increased power with the Well?

I'll give an older example. How do heroes gain influence for defeating baddies? Do they rob them? Seems doubtful in context. Are they paid for by the state? Maybe the April's Joke is real. Or is it that the citizenry admires them more, enough to give them products and services due to their reputation?

I'd wager the same reason we mix dollar bills into our Inventions recipes - as a money sink. Ever notice that all recipes go something like:

-Pour the mcguffin juice into a special pot.
-Introduce powdered plot device and stir gently.
-Stuff ten $100 bills into the mix.
-Wait, what?

I always figured each villain has a bounty on his head. You put this many goons in jail, we grant you this much IOU credits to spend at authorised stores. Away you go!

The reason for this thread?

A while back, people came up with some mcguff when 'countering' the stupid Inf costs we have when it comes to the new Incarnate salvage, most annoying being the cost to turn shards from something anyone with the V.Rare Alpha has 0% need for to something useful (threads).

The apparent reasoning was 'Inf isn't money! It's blahblahblah!'
Well, I once again call BS on that.
*shrug*

So, when you defeat a bad guy and get a recipe for a LoTG +7% and a Deific Weapon, do you immediately destroy them because your hero is giving them over as evidence to the cops? Or do you stuff them in your spandex pockets and keep walking? What justification do you have for keeping them?

Not only that but the stores only cater to heroes. It's a retail establishment selling radiation bombardment, heat-seeking grenades and mystical artifacts. Are these sold to the general public for cash? Do the police or government need to make a run to the corner store to pick up some magical To-Hit DeBuff spells? The only clientele these stores have is heroes and the only currency heroes have is Influence.

I would kind of figure it has to be money. Say I take my 50 scrapper to Atlas and run around taking down grey-con Hellions for an hour, for example. I then present myself at the market to reap the rewards of my "favors and fame" and what would I get?

"Well, yeah Clave, thanks and all but... I mean, those guys are dangerous gang members and everything, um... yes, you certainly did put a lot of them behind bars, a lot, and it's not that we aren't grateful, exactly... but..."

As far as I'm concerned, it's an abstract and can represent anything; money, favors, public respect, etc. From such a viewpoint, everyone wins.
