My Tab key is gonna drive me nuts :(
I've changed my ~ key (tilde) an all my toons to target closest enemy. Its right above Tab anyways and I can still cycle thru enemies with Tab if I want to.
/bind TAB "target_enemy_next"
Copy the above into your chat and hit enter. From now on, Tab will start cycling through the nearby targets, getting further away.
You can also do what I do:
/bind X "target_enemy_near"
This one brings your target to the closest enemy to you. If you hit X and the TAB, you will start at the closest, work your way out and then circle back when you run outta targets.
Though one problem with X key: if you fly, that is by default your 'move straight down' command.
True, I usually make D = Down for Flight.
Whether you use X or D or another key, the formula remains the same. Plug in whatever key you're comfortable with.
/bind <Key> "target_enemy_near"
/bind TAB "target_enemy_next"

Tab is just junk.
I use the following:
/bind tab "targetenemynear"
/bind shift+tab "targetenemynext"
Tab brings my targeting reticle as close as possible, then shift+tab starts cycling through them from there, out (most of the time - like I said - tab is junk and sometimes doesn't work properly). If you prefer to use tab as your cycle, you can switch the two binds.

Ctrl-Tab is the default to target nearest foe.
But, yeah, I have been complaining about the Tab targeting system preferring to always target foes furthest away from you at the most critical moments. I even posed it as a question during one of the Ask a Dev events - with no response.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
I've never noticed TAB acting any differently than designed, despite all the complaints about it I've seen over the years.
What I think creates the problem for example:
You defeat a group of foes, and still have one of them targeted.
You move down the hallway to the next group od foes, and hit TAB.
The previous target was 80ft away now, so it cycles to the "next" foe, at 85 ft.
But wait, the foes are right in front of me! This isn't working! ARRRGH!
That's what makes having a target_near bound to a key a good idea, like Aggelakis mentioned.
You can also hit escape to clear the target first, then hit TAB to get the closest foe.
Personally, I use tilde for targeting as well, so I don't have to use Control+TAB.

If you hit escape, then try to use an attack, it'll automatically select the closest foe.
|
On a side note, that doesn't really help if your intention isn't necessarily to attack the nearest foe, but to simply start your cycle back to nearest, and cycle forward again until you hit the boss for debuffing or whatever else you might have wanted to do.
I used to use tilde (technically the grave accent key) for toggling my travel powers... but since I switched laptops a few years back CoX completely ignores that key for binds
|
I still call it tilde, because my targeting binds for that key all say "/bind TILDE ". Then again, since the game always treats it as the ~ instead of `, that could be why it doesn't work on some system or keyboard layouts. Either way it kinda stinks.

"If you hit escape, then try to use an attack, it'll automatically select the closest foe."
Escape also puts away your weapon, if you have one. I got into the esc-tab habit on a nonweapon character and now whenever I'm playing a sword -type scrapper I swear a lot.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
I just learnt to cope with using the mouse

You have no idea how much the loss of the ~ key for binds pissed me off. Every one of my characters used it for travel powers (except my Warshade, which used it to target dead bodies... necrophiliac!), I had to rebind every character, and try to figure out wtf key I would use, and is probably a large part of the reason I began ditching travel powers (I definitely couldn't do stuff like switching between SJ and CJ mid-fight... I like my combat mobility ).
Now I have my favorite key back... woooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

* Except when it was, or when the attack was faster when you drew with the attack... apparently the original animators just put random numbers!

Had the same problem. Tilde's always been my go-to key for not-quite-attack-chain powers. Glad you could fix it.
Isn't the Tab key supposed to cycle enemies from nearest to furthest? Mine is cycling through enemies alright, but it actually starts with the FURTHEST away enemy then cycles through to the nearest. It's extremely annoying and frustrating and I always find myself forced to use my mouse to select targets which is a little inconvenient for me. (Yes, I did many tests. It really does start with the furthest away enemy).
Is there a way to fix this? Or at least a string of binds to simulate cycling through enemies starting with the nearest one? I tried my hand at a couple binds but none are working. I always end up targeting the closest enemy but not being able to cycle through.
