Level-Locking a character questions.

I've heard that some folks will level-lock a character in order to better thier chances for specific recipies with random rolls. I've thought about trying it out, but am unsure of a few things.

Most of what i've heard is that people lock around lvl 30 for the most profitable selections, is that true?

Also, is there a difference between random rolls with AE tickets and random rolls with Amerits? I mean, as far as the pools the recipies come from?

Finally, If I were to level-lock a toon, what is a good at/powerset combo for running at around level 30? I was thinking scrap/brute maybe. I'm mainly looking at getting my 5 alignment missions done everyday so I can random roll with A-merits most often.

Thanks in advance!

AE tickets are split into Bronze, Silver and Gold pools.

Bronze rolls are the uncommon (yellow) and rare (orange) recipes you can get from defeating enemies.
Silver rolls are a combination of the rare recipes you get from defeating enemies, and the recipes you get from completing missions.
Gold rolls are the remainder of the rare recipes. Previously, before the advent of merits, they were the rewards for completing Task Forces and Trials.

Merit rolls give one Gold Roll, A-Merit rolls give five Gold Rolls.

Common Recipes, Costume Recipes, Purples, and PVP IOs cannot be earned from any roll - they must be earned the standard way, or purchased directly with the appropriate type(s) of merits.

The best level to lock at depends on your preference. I'd say that 25, 30, 32, and 35 are the most popular levels for level locking.

Personally, I would roll a Super Reflexes or Energy Aura stalker, with whatever primary you prefer. Stealth and high defense will help you complete your tip missions as quickly as possible.

There are many other options too. My method will work, but won't be the best for everyone.

I haven't tried this in a while, but if you aren't using your second build you can use that to train to the level you want and roll away. I'm not sure if it still works, but give it a try.

I don't think that's ever worked, but I can assure you that it does not at the moment.

All rolls happen at your real experience level, regardless of what level you might be trained to, or sidekicked/exemplared to.

My level 50 has got level 14 (or so, but I think 14) recipes while on, for example, Synapse or Positron Task Force (actually don't remember which one). Exemplared while on a TF may work a bit differently.

I had a bane locked at 30 for awhile, worked villain tip missions pretty quickly. Might have to try a stalker though.

I said rolls. Drops follow different rules.

You know, I proposed making a Stalker specifically to level-lock and run tip missions, and the replies on the Stalker board were pretty meh about the idea for some reason.

One caveat to the OP: you ask if "people lock around lvl 30 for the most profitable selections." Well, truth is, people level-lock because they want to get recipes of that level (or in a few cases because they are altruistically feeding the market with mid-level recipes -- there's a project going on in the Market forums if you're interested), but NOT because mid-level recipes are "more profitable." While it's finally being recognized that some of the entry-level recipes are more useful, almost all prices remain best at level 50 (or top level for the set if that's not 50). So if it's just cash you want, level-locking isn't very useful. But if you'd like a shot at some level 30 Obliterations, for example, and there haven't been any on the market for 4 days, it's one thing you can try.

For a very, very long time level 50 was the place to roll for max inf. I'm not 100% sure that's true anymore because the huge supply may have finally blunted the demand. What you'll see if you level lock at 30, or 32, or 35 is that occasional recipes will do very, very well; for most of the rest you'd be better off rolling with a level 50.

It always seems to me when I random roll at lvl 50 I get far more crap (i.e. not very marketable) stuff than when I do at lower levels. That was what prompted me to start looking at this in the first place.

Level 50 recipes are garbage 90% of the time. Craft them up, and they'll often sell for more (somethimes MUCH more) than recipe+salvage+crafting cost.

Maybe, but that's not why I do it. In my opinion, the sweet spot for IO sets is in the mid 30's - high enough to be powerful, but low enough that you can exemp for most game content and keep your bonuses. I have a level locked toon to take random rolls to get stuff I need, then sell what's left.

Also, I do lots of task forces while leveling and my characters blow all their merits on random rolls when they hit 35, for the same reason.

Good Grief: It sounds like you might be rolling 45-50.

If you roll in the 35-39 zone with a level 50 character, you will still get max-level stuff but you will get sets that cap at 35 or 40. Like, for instance, Kinetic Combat Dam/End/Rech [150 million each, crafted, last I saw] or Miracle: +Recovery.

If you roll in 25-29, which I have only done a couple of times, you lose access to some trendy sets and a lot of level 50 stuff that's in huge oversupply; in return you get some nice stuff that caps at 30/35/40, and a lot of terrible stuff that has no demand.

Either way you can get some miserable sludge; back when I was buying midlevel rolls [I paid in advance, people rolled and gave me whatever they got] I remember someone rolling, I think, 16 stinkers in a row.

Ahhh thanks, Fulmens! That cleared up a bit of it for me.

I guess locking in a toon at a low level only makes sense if I'm looking to hone in on a specific, low-level set of recipies

I occasionally lvl lock one of my heroes for about 15 minutes. Then I think about all the powers I will get in the future so I go back to earning XP.

There are times though when I think it would be fun to have my brute or Controller at a specific lvl just because I like the baddies or something.

So my vote is for you to take one of your favorites that you still play and make a clone up to whatever lvl you like. Then you get to play something you enjoy and earn merits or tickets to your hearts delight.

Enjoy your day please.
