Anyone Have a Loud Glowie File?

No I don't, but you could always just replace it with one of the other sounds or with a siren or whatever else you wanted.

But keep in mind that the sound the objective makes is also used in a couple other areas of the game as well, so depending on what you use, it might fool you or get annoying.

Personally, if it gets to the point where I really can't find the objective, I just turn up the volume on my system myself. Having a keyboard with volume controls on it helps make it quick and easy. lol

Actually, it isn't. At least not that I've found. There are some sounds that are similar, like at the entrance of some missions, but aren't changed by my glowie sound replacement.

But annoying they can me. I replaced my with Homer Simpson saying "he he". It's very annoying and very easy to hear. But I like it that way, it gets me to hit the glowies asap.

For what it's worth, here's mine. But as I said, it's very annoying.

Oh that's good to know. I thought for sure it changed on me a long time ago when I tried it, but maybe I replaced the wrong file somehow. haha. I deleted it and haven't tried since.

And ROFL at your file. You are right that's quite annoying on a loop, but sure is noticeable.

Who knows, it might have been changed over the years.

The path/file I use is:
sound\ogg\FrontEnd\Objective_loop.ogg

I think I might have assumed it was like the Portals in Peregrine Island and replaced multiple sources. I guess that's what I get for not checking it better.

Also, the I believe the destructible objective is:
sound\Ogg\Destructibles\ImDestructible.ogg

And let's look on the bright side, at least they didn't decide to use sounds for hostage rescues...
This like sound\Ogg\NPCs\FemScream5.ogg would drive me nuts. haha

That's very cool, but I'd just prefer a louder version of the sound as I don't like completely altering the sounds in the game as I feel there is some disruption of the integrity of the game's experience, but simply making a sound louder or softer, especially out of near-necessity, doesn't give me that same feeling of disruption. If that makes sense.

I'm hoping someone has a traditional-but-louder-glowie sound lying around they wouldn't mind linking.

P.S. And that glowie sound-alike in those mission entrances always gets me thinking, "Oh, a glowie!" Been playing for 5ish years and still do that lol.

Well, I went ahead and did it myself out of curiosity. Increase of 15 dB makes it a tad aesthetically unappealing but very easily detected. I'll see if I can live with it. The sound gets raspy very quickly with any increase in dB, making it difficult to find a happy medium between convenience and aesthetics.

I tried the above destructible path with no success (tested in the "destroy sky raiders lab" tip mission).

Also, this is one of the two uses for Stalkers I've found in PvE.*

*Note: I play Stalkers.

Here's a louder version. (click on Download)

The original file's gain is almost as loud as you can get without clipping, which introduces a buzz into the file. So, I went ahead with the over-gain. You might find the buzzing, which isn't as bad as it sounds, helpful in finding the glowie.

If the file causes the universe to implode, I disavow all knowledge. Caveat emptor.

Thanks for the attempt Zombie Man! File didn't work for me, though.

I think the one I have is good enough, but I might make a new 12dB version of it to make it a bit more reasonable sounding.

One issue I noticed with any glowie sound is you have to be within a set range of the glowie for the sound to trigger at all.

I dunno. Would something that sounded like this be more noticeable?

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I've been using parts of the sound Origin sound themes which I got from the CoH Fan Site Kit. They are as loud as I can manage to get them; they are noticeable but not obnoxious.

objective_loop_tech.ogg

objective_loop_science.ogg

[Just edit the file name to be: objective_loop.ogg and put it in the folder: \City of Heroes\data\Sound\ogg\FrontEnd ]

[I am assuming that the slight editing I did to these files doesn't make them "naughty-bad" file sharing. If it is, someone let me know and I will remove them from the site.]

Those are very interesting, thanks for sharing them! I think I'll try them, but as I said I don't like completely altering sounds if I can help it, so we'll see if I like these better than the buzzing of the loud traditional glowie sound I'm using now.

One thing I did to change my Glowie sound for the better was to just chop off most of the silence at the beginning and end of the sound so it "pulses" more often.

If the original sound goes like this...

____ooOOoo________ooOOoo________ooOOoo________ooOO oo____

my modified one goes like this:

_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_ooOOoo_

The extra active sound alone makes it much easier to find the glowie when you don't have to spend half your time just waiting for the sound to kick off again.

Someone needs to make the alarm sound from "A Fist Full of Yen" from Kentucky Fried Movie. It's a guy going "Waa Waa" into a megaphone. Quiet distinctive.

Then again so is "Hey over here".

Why don't I have any .ogg files or those directories on my machine?

The ogg files are in the various sound pigg files. That directory structure, the same that's used by add-ons like vidiotmaps and splasher, is a way the devs set up to allow them to try out various replacement items like textures and sounds (as well as geometry) without the need to "compile" them into the correct pigg file.

You won't have any of those files or folders unless you have manually created them or installed some kind of player-made customization program to City of Heroes that creates them.

They're not part of a regular installation and everything in this post is completely unsupported by NCSoft/Paragon Studios.
