CoX website...someday?
Layout seems really busy and messy, and personally I have no use for social networking so those features would be a complete waste to me. I'm getting sick of seeing every single website with a billion "add this website to your Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/Reddit/ShoutNET/VerbIfy* account!" links on it.
*Yes I made those last two up.

Maybe I'm just more of a private (or maybe introverted) person. I can manage to be sociable when the occasion calls for it. But, on the whole, I just don't "get" the draw of such sites.
I get the need to document things. Hence the extensive picture archive on my site. But I could honestly give a damn how many people link TO my site, or even look at it. It's there for others sure, but primarily it's there for ME.
ME ME ME!
But the idea of
Friday
11:10: On the pot. Somethin's churnin'...Saturday
11:12: OMG! Will it never end! The stench!
11:14: I'm now 150 lbs lighter and won't be sitting down for most of the rest of my life. Anyone know a number for a good roto-rooter guy?
13:00: Just got kneed in the nuts by a girl. I hate them! Swearing them off till "SCHWING! SHE'S A BABE! I'm in luuuuv!" AUGH! Nuts again! Hate! HATE!
21:00: Jaeger bombz. I hink i m durnk! Ooo numy flor! *THUD*
21:00: Okay! I've lost most of the last day. And my head feels like a thermobaric bomb is continually going off. All I know is I woke up in a bathtub full of ice with both kidneys missing and a used prophylactic lodged in my colon. Worst of all, I missed all that quality twit-time! LOUSY DAY!If you're reading this and you're an avid user of these social networking sites, please don't be offended (well, okay if you REALLY need to, it'll give you something to twit about). It's just I understand the concepts. I just don't get the lifestyle.

honestly ive never trusted myspace or facebook (myspace for various reasons, facebook because you cannot delete anything on there, if you delete your account, your profile page and all that still remain in their database so nothing is actually deleted)
aside from those things i just dont really get it that much, i mean the most social things that i use are steam and skype, but i hardly ever touch skype unless im talking to my girlfriend and i mostly use steam for buying and playing games through
technically the other most social thing that i use is these forums too, because well (most) everyone on here is pretty cool most of the time
honestly dont know how poeple can keep blogs and all that lol

Using Facebook as a model for doing anything is a bad idea from the start; I'm not saying things couldn't be improved (Where's our bloody online character DB thing that was being "worked on" before I left 8 issues ago?, for example) but trying to (inevitably badly) emulate existing services is never a good way to go about things as you just end up a) playing catch up and b) looking like you've ripped them off.

The only problem with CIT is that it doesn't provide full character details (as it's primarily focused on badges) so if you want something with, say, full power/slotting info then you're out of luck. Not saying that CIT isn't good - I find it very useful - just that's it's not as complete as it could be.

First thing I thought of when checking it out was: wouldn't the CoX site be even MORE UBER-AWESOME with this set-up?

To me things like Facebook, Twitter and the whole social networking thing is almost like a MMO in and of itself. Basically Facebook is the "MMO for people who don't realize they are playing a MMO".
So when I play an actual game I don't really want to waste time playing the "game outside of the game". If I want to Facebook I'll Facebook, if I want to involve myself in a game I'll do that. But I don't really need to mix the two.
It's sort of the same thing that comes up when people want to have voice chat directly added to CoH. Why would we need our Devs go out of their way to bog down the game client when 3rd party things such as Ventrilo already exist? A game, by itself, doesn't have to do everything on its own. CoH doesn't really need a clone of Facebook created for it - just use Facebook for that.

I have to agree with the distaste for Facebook and Twitter, as well as with the irritation that they're so omnipresent. It seems like every site nowadays has link to "Like us on Facebook!" Ugh... That sounded dirty, didn't it?
I don't have a social networking account, and I'm not interested in having one.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

I here I was about to sacrifice another puppy thinking this was another City Vault thread.

The community has stepped up to the bat and created it. I wouldn't count on the devs making an official version of this or a hero builder due to the fact that player-made tools already exist and are extremely well-done. And best of all, because it's player-made, it's completely 100% opt-in. (I'm not touting this as a model to be followed or even necessarily ideal, but this is the reality we're working with.)

Gonna be totally honest here, I think Twitter is dumb and all, but I would totally follow this account.

I don't get Twitter either though. I see no point in updating people with my exact actions at this exact moment.

CoX has the best online community hands-down, and I wanted to turn you all on to what could be the next-gen for sites like this.
I just started playing a fun new (single-player) game from Europe, and checking out its website, I find that one of the programmers involved with the game designed and created a really innovative site to support it.
It's very Facebooky (so much so that I worry about infringements) but I find interacting with the community virtually effortless, with all sorts of REALLY useful features.
First thing I thought of when checking it out was: wouldn't the CoX site be even MORE UBER-AWESOME with this set-up?
See what you think and maybe we can convince a Mod or Dev involved in Forums stuff to head over there to see what's up as well.
It's got a scrolling "chatbox" Instant Messenger at the top, Newest posts, Newest blog entries, Map uploads, Downloads, Mods, etc. listed on the right. "Friends", status posts, you name it.
Very nifty.
