Babel's Journal

The Modern World is a muddled, confusing, paranoid, violent place.

I fought with Civil on Friday. I had little choice as he was possessed by the shapeshifter, Tyrannix. He had wired the base up with explosives. We fought, I revealed the true extent of my powers, subdued him and was able to extract the disarming codes from his poor, tortured mind.

A few days before I had revealed my secrets to our leader, Rogue Manipulator. He reassured me that I was still welcome within the team.

I wonder how much of that battle Civil remembers.

And now Civil will not submit to the law - he appears to have ended the life of a woman called Jessica Granger whilst at the same time defeating Tyrannix. And so I find myself writing this journal, in the vain hope that he might read it and realise just how much he would be throwing his life away by running back to England.

And the more I learn about him, the more I realise that we have been cast in similar roles. I just hope that he can see sense.

Voice Recording initiated by Lady Babel

Iron's predicament is affecting us all in different ways - Conall is the most notably affected. I would have liked to reach out to him when Iron denied all knowledge of the past two months, but my mind was focussed more on a way to restore my teammate to her proper self.

I think I have found a method of drawing Iron's energy back to the same place. I admit I wasn't there to witness her encounter with Tyrannix and Lord Chill, so I may be totally off the mark, but Monty has handed me a ritual spell as reward for my efforts in aiding him and the Midnighters.

The writing looks to be mid-sixteenth Century, old English. I had to control myself or risk the words rising from the page and entering my head again - who knows what damage an absorbed incantation could wreak? I translated to modern English on a piece of old parchment and showed Conall.

There was, sadly, a shopping list of the kind of ingredients that only amateur witches bother with: spider webs, newt teeth, silver weed... all very banal. But there is one thing that is missing - it's called an Ambient Accumulator Lens - and of course it's rare and elusive!

I spoke with Civil, Conall, and our ally in all of this, Megan. Civil mentioned Konrad was versed in magic. Megan was being very cagey about the subject - she didn't like the look of the crudely-drawn lens I had copied.

I left Conall to go out and menace some Circle of Thorns mages. He thought they would most likely have such a device, or know of its whereabouts. Civil left, possibly feeling out of his league where magic is concerned. I forget sometimes that my gift of understanding can often lead others to believe I am truly confident about a subject, when in fact I am as nervous as they are about the unknown. And I have always said that understanding is not the same as knowing.

Now I need to find the switch for this blasted machine. I need a drink and some quiet meditation before I attempt to capture my voice again. Where is the-

I...have returned. I think. Truth be told, I'm not sure.

Something's off. I can't acess my old powers. Or my true powers. Thank the gods I overprepared and fitted the Golem and Homonculous with armour with their own fusion generators, and power gauntlets. They'll do.

Hah. I spent so much time complaining about my "gift", and now it's gone, I don't know what to think. I suppose I should be glad. I'm back.

...I think.

What happened in my "absence", I don't know. The memories of it feel just out of reach- like a dream that just escapes you upon waking. Maybe it'll come in time.

I'll need to ask more later. But for now...I'm glad that I'm..."back". For what it's worth.

Team-mates

I do not know what to say.

The return of Iron or Dana as Babel referred her as, was a momentus event for our team.

Whilst I do not want to soil this happy occassion, considering our misfortunes as of late, a tragedy has befallen myself.

I don't know how, or why. But my once skeletal, ethereal form has changed. It started with a simple itch, but I began to rapidly feel unwell, which was interesting for I never felt unwell.

The one called Megan 'comforted' me as I collapsed in the hall way. Like I mentioned, I know not how this has happened, but my once dead form has been imbued with life.

This is not a good thing.

I am a vampire, and I haven't fed in hundreds and hundreds of years. I believe it a matter of time before I will do something I regret ...

Do not let this soil Dana's return, though I do openly ask for help, for my concern is with you, not myself.

Recording Initiated by Lady Babel

Lady Babel: This is Lady Babel of Liberty Force. I'd like to record this little gathering for posterity.

Conall Seolfor: Hm ... time to wake him up I think.

Iron Vanguard: Him? C'mon, if I'm staying awake...

Lady Babel: I, Lady Babel, promise to uphold the principles of justice, to face future threats, and to protect those I have come to know as friends. It's cheesy, but it works for me.

Conall Seolfor: It is okay

Megan Incarnate: He's been in doggy mode the whole time. Jeez.

Conall Seolfor: He did it for my own good

Lady Babel chuckles

Iron Vanguard: ...Typ-ic-al.

Conall Seolfor: I have been without sleep for more than 2 weeks…

Iron Vanguard: And I've been … er ... asleep. For 2 weeks.

Conall Seolfor: We have catching up to do.

Tomb Guard chuckles, though there is a tint of nervousness to it, then clears his throat: Hm, excuse me whilst I get myself a drink.

Iron Vanguard: Shouldn't you be sleeping?

Conall Seolfor: Later...

Megan Incarnate: . . . drink?

Conall Seolfor: Right now... I want to be here, with you.

*A Personal recording device in the home of The Thunderar*

I suppose this is the end...I started these logs to give myself some sort of clarity, to see how things had progressed over the past few months, and after listening to them again...I can see that nothings changed, nothings gotten better...It was all a waste of time.

When I first joined Liberty Force I decided, against my better judgement, to give it my all, to hold nothing back, and I still feel I kept to that, when asked about anything I answered openly and honestly.
When Rogue decided to leave for his home dimension, something I know now he needed to do to keep his powers, however that works...He put me and Double A in charge, or at least asked us to look after the place for a while.

Admittedly I didn't just 'take charge', ordering people around or anything, but I kept an eye on things.
When Iron Vanguard vanished, while Conall moped around, I tried my best to find out what exactly happened to her, I studied her logs, I asked Adam to try and track her down, a feat beyond even him apparently....

I asked her friends how this could have happened, what type of being she really was, if not human...I received nothing but a wall of secrets.
I trusted my team mates with everything from day one, and got nothing back, Iron still keeps her secrets, staying a mystery, Babel was much more open, yet something troubles her, I can see it in her eyes...Rogue was gone for so long, Conall seems quite loyal but hes headstrong and has said many times he would kill those who hurt his friends....not exactly hero material.

Civil keeps his identity a secret, even from us, and though he dealt with Tyrannix...he sacrificed someone else to do it, something I cannot....will not, EVER condone, and yet he's on this new 'Council of Founders'?!

Yes, another thing to add, Rogue came back and apparently after some talks with Iron came to the conclusion we needed stronger unity within the group, some form of real leadership, I've been saying that for a long time but at least now he was actually acting upon the idea so it didn't matter.

And then he chose the members without any sort of consultation with the group, Civil who is being tried for murder, Iron who keeps secrets from everyone within Liberty Force, even Conall I think...Aerial Assault is the only member I could say would make a brilliant addition to the Council.

Myself and Lady Babel were there from the start yet were also passed over...Rogue thought I was throwing a tantrum last night, that I just wanted to be a part of the leadership and that's why I was upset, double A thought I wanted recognition....All I wanted from Liberty Force, all I've ever wanted...was their trust.

Its not a team, there is no unity, Rogue was wrong to bring us together, to tell us how much better we could be together yet divide us the first chance he got...Its over, my dream of something better is over before it even got started.

....
I let him know I'll be there when needed, but it will be alone...It always will be...

Things are moving quickly. It seems Rogue has accepted more responsibility as a leader, and is taking to role seriously; he's promoted a more organized command structure. Thunderar didn't take it too well, but we can't please everyone.

Whether because of this, or like he says something else, he has decided to leave Liberty Force. I'm dissapointed, but I won't stop him. Still, I hope for a private word with him. I don't want any bad blood between us.

We followed the adress to what should have been Tyrannix's home. We fought a Nictus named "Quantanimator"- I'll need to interrogate him fully later, but Sunstorm knew him. Which may mean he's sincere. He was killed by a sniper as Megan leveled the apartment block- and destroyed the Shadow Cysts he was hording- but we ressurected him with the "Gift" Civil recieved; he's in holding now. We destroyed most of the Nictus, but many escaped...Sunstorm has been informed.

Speaking of him, I had to do some explaining. He's agreed to keep quiet about me...for now. I'm glad.

Me, Civil, and Conall will be doing some special-operations work for Vanguard, contacting the Resistance about the aftermath. We'll be gone for a few days. We're hoping that on the next alert, the newer heroes should be able to come...provided it's deemed safe.

Hmmm...Ok things have improved...well...not really but for Liberty Force I mean...not for me, well ok yes for me but...god dammit need to start again...

*Various clicking noises are heard*

Ah to hell with it I'll do it live...IT SUCKS! hahaha...ahum.
Ok so things are getting better with the team, after so much hassle and trouble, so much pain...Tyrannix is now a member of Liberty Force!
Bloody insane but...it felt right, as we kept him captive he talked about his motivations and I think we all saw something behind his supposedly evil intentions.

He needed a chance, we gave him one and I think it paid off, its been a couple of days and he seems to be doing well, a few ideas of his perhaps need a little toning down when dealing with criminals but...its can work, I believe it can work.

Civil was much more forthcoming as well, his name is Max, he even showed us his face.
Of course he only did this because he thinks someone is going to kill him but....yeah, its something.

I told the team about my condition last night as well, they took it...about as well as can be expected, I don't know...does that mean they took it well or badly? heh, at least that's over.
There's now only one person left to tell, one I feel is important because....well she may be the only one who truly understands what I'm going through regarding my memories and stuff.

Things are going well, Liberty Force is becoming something brilliant....I hope it lasts forever.

...So. Apparently Tyrannix is a member of Liberty Force now. I was away when the descision was made, but...I trust the others judgement on this. That doesn't mean I won't be watching my back, however.

Andrew is dying. It's saddening, but there's nothing which can be done, by the looks of things. So I'll stand by him 'till the end, and make sure that he doesn't go to the void with regrets. Disagreements or no, he's my teamate and my friend- I've despatched Dusk to find as much information as she can on those from the bank, as well as whoever is trying to kill Max.

Dean's in bad shape. He was nearly killed the other day by a Paragon Protector- the same from the bank, I believe. Right arm gone from the elbow down, legs mangled, spine broken, heavy internal injury including pierced lungs, ribs shattered, jaw broken, and his left arm is pasted. I've been working with his friend to make him prosthetics- but there's a lot needed. I'm not sure if Dean will survive the procedure, but he's strong willed.

Things are progressing, but there's a rough road ahead of us yet.

Yesterday we gained two new members, the first was Rorik, a bird man from another planet, a friend of Rogues apparently from way back.
I'm not entirely sure why he came to this world to aid us but maybe that was all the reason he needed, he simply came to help.

The second was Shining Valkyrie, lovely woman, she'll make an excellent addition to the team....heh.
So the next part of the evening....removing my 'Heart', the power core that Erez'Zul used to seal my essence in, before he stuck it inside my body.
At first I tried removing it myself but the scalpel I used was a bit small and to be honest at the angle I was cutting it would have gotten.....messy.

When Civil came along I asked him to use his swords but he was kinda shocked at the idea, I guess I should explain exactly what I needed to do it for to him before he thinks I'm completely off my rocker.
Eventually I asked Megan to do it, she was a bit worried at first but in the end she didn't even need a knife....really not sure how her powers work but whatever, no pain for me.

Of course I was going to test it out first, removing a chunk of flesh, moving it away from the heart and seeing if it remained stable....but whatever! She got the job done.
With the heart removed my body should remain generally unaffected by the corruption and I should be able to stay strong until the very end.

As for where I stored the heart....its somewhere safe, guarded by someone I trust....Not every day you give your heart away, but I believe gave it to the right person.

Record 14. Time is 11:47, 23rd of May.

I am recording this from Talos's shoulder, for I cannot concentrate in the base.

It seemed a normal enough day. Met Babel in the garden. Met a "new" friend, Shining Valkryie. Then I met Adam, Andrew's progenitor.

It appears that both clone and parent are dying, and only one can be saved. With, quite literally, Andrew's heart. Both refuse for the other to die. It's heartbreaking to see this happen once again. I promised Adam I would attempt to persuade Andrew to survive, but...

He may be dead as I speak. He collapsed, starting breaking up. His fate is in his own hands now, and Megan's. If he survives, then I will be glad. If not...then I am sorry for failing, Adam. I didn't...

*slight coughing sound, concealing a sob*

...Didn't realise it would happen so soon. I'm...sorry.

*regains her composure*

...In addition to this, I argued with Rogue. I am becoming steadily less impressed with him. This may be my penultimate record; if Rogue insists on acting the way he does, then I will be no part of this.

*angry tone rising*

Fool. He speaks of authority, yet he has none himself. I-

*cuts herself off, again regaining her composure*

...I will speak to him again on this matter. I will stay until this issue with Andrew is resolved, but if Rogue persists, then I will leave afterwards.

Let us hope that this does not come to past.

A letter arrives at Liberty Force HQ in the main meeting room. The message which follows is written on what appears to be parchment rather than paper and signed with a skull at the bottom.

It has come to our attention that you are giving shelter and aid to a villain.

This will not do.

If you are smart, you will hand over this villain to the authorities, where they will be properly dealt with. If you are foolish, you will keep them safe.

We would like to give you fair warning. We expect the villain to be delivered to the Kings Row Police Station by Sunday anytime before midnight.

If you fail to comply, there will be severe consequences.

The consequences are simple. Death. For every week that the villain is not delivered to the police station, we will target one of your members.

To serve as a warning, the first target will be the one you call Babel

We hope you make the correct decision.

((OOC)) From RM:

Just thought people might appreciate a couple of maps of the base,

here you go:

We confronted Joutei a few days a go; the plan was sound; we searched the surrounding area, posted guards around the only exit of the meeting place, and I used a hologram to get close to him. But we severly underestimated him. He managed to get past us and lead us into several traps. Realising that we'd lost our advantage of battlefield control, I challenged him to a duel; no-one allowed to interfere. That got rid of the sniper problem, although it left me dueling with an incredibly dangerous opponent, with no backup. And I was already wounded from a previous trap.

It was close. I managed to force him to forfeit the duel via breaking the terms, although if Megan hadn't shielded me at the last moment, my brains would have been decorating that roof. He fled, and I got medi-ported. Seraphian fighting style is dangerous, but as much to the user as to the opponent.

I managed to arrange a peaceful meeting with Joutei last night, after meeting another of the Eclipse. Despite everything, I trusted Joutei, and my trust was not misplaced. We've called a truce of Tyrannix; I give him 20 lashings and watch him to ensure that he doesn't stray from the straight and narrow; Joutei will no longer attempt to kill him. In addition, he's agreed to help us flush out the other member, who seems significantly more reprehensible and in more need of being dealt with.

Civil appears to be slightly injured, but is refusing to see a doctor. I'll have to talk to him about that. Still no sign of recovery from Andrew...That, I will also need to investigate.

Adam is dead. Andrew is alive.

It appears that matters progressed while I was distracted by...other matters. The news saddens me, however, I will keep my promise and watch out for Andrew. But I'll give him some time. He ran, and I doubt he'll want anyone intruding on him, so I will not. I will seek him out, but for now, he'll need to come to terms with his grief on his own.

We also have a new member of Liberty Force. Unbeweglich. I'd heard about him here and there on the news. A hero, definately. In terms of personality...

...There's no point lying here, is there? Really, I think he came off as a bit of an ***. Aloof, critical. Maybe it was just a bad first impression, but we'll see. Fame and history, even power, doesn't elevate anybody over anyone else in Liberty Force. I hope he understands that.

I've made many of these in the past, but this is the first I'm using for more than just practise. I will document my thoughts as a member of Liberty Force without going into unrelated details. *laughs* Wow. I wonder if I can remain so focused. Oh well, here goes.

Entry 1:

Monday, June 6th

I've taken over Andrew's room. I'm sure none of them understand why and may feel I'm just being callouse and opportunistic. Well, they're mostly right. It is a nice office and the location in the base is great.

Truth be told, the real reason is I didn't want Andrew having second thoughts before taking his journey of selfdiscovery. So I snatched the rug out from under him to be sure he had no reservations about leaving us.

I sense he's never been as alone as he is now. It's wonderful. At last, he can forge his own identity.
Time will tell, not I.

Entry 2:

Thrusday, June 9th

I was treated to a real experience last night. For the first time in many months, I felt something. Such a sweet sensation that I had given up all hope on feeling ever again.
The villain, Pseudonym, used a migic on me which I could only discribe as hellish punishment for my good deeds in the past. At least that is what I have come to understand. I'm sure he has no idea how greatful I am for that. Being completly numb for so long, this agony was a welcome reminder that I can still be hurt.

Unfortunately it was still only pain. None of that which is created by the remnants of divinity can possibly harm me. That would be like expecting the smell of a smoking gun to do me harm. Still, I feel a little more in touch with my old mortality again.

Events once more move apace, and I do my best to keep up.

Dr. Scott, The Rogue Manipulator, has stepped down as leader of Liberty Force. He claims that it is under threat from Lord Chill. I do not like buckling under blackmail, no matter who from, but I cannot influence Rogue's descision.

And so as of the 14th of June, I, Iron Vanguard, formerly known as Athena Dawnlight, am now head of Liberty Force. I won't fail. Not this time.

In other news, we ambushed the Summoner. It went well, but he escaped- to my annoyance. We made contact with the largest demon- or rather, forcibly mutated human- Haaz'kol. But he reclaimed "his property" and escaped. But we hurt him. That's what matters to me. He knows that we're stronger. And next time, he won't escape.

...I talked with Venessa and Claire again. It's a relief to no longer be hiding.

Public record #1

First, an introduction.

I am called Prince Solar, though once I was called Saul Victorson, and also Coronal Prominence. I am a Peacebringer.

Following a chance encounter against one of their foes, I have joined up with the Liberty Force to help bring order and security to the Earth.

My first official mission as part of Liberty Force
On this day, I detected a great spike of energy while orbiting above the Earth. Though I detect many such spikes while recharging my solar energy, I believed this was significant because it appeared to be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, far away from usual activity. And on closer inspection, it felt like dimensional rift energy. We would soon know it was none other than a portal for a Praetorian invasion.

With haste, I called for assistance from the military and Paragon's heroes. Admiral's Sutter of the US Navy was assigned to us, and together we closed in on the rift.

The strike team consisted of myself, Prince Solar.

Foxienne, a furred archer of great generosity and no small skill.

Phantom Circuit, a hero with a mastery of phasing and ionic energy.

Rocket Girl, a young rocketeer who weilds plasmic energy blasts from her gauntlets.

And Silvermane, a mysterious mystic with some talent for psionic manipulation.

As we rendez-voused with the fleet, we found that they were already under attack by Sky Pirates attack skiffs and Praetorian War Walkers! And there, the site of the rift was none other than a giant jury-rigged ship platform; a massive vessel easily dwarfing the entire fleet the Navy had sent against it!

We liberated each Navy ship in turn, disabling Sky Raider infiltration teams and clearing the decks from the War Walker assault. Phantom Circuit was able to disarm the bombs planted on our engines with his phasing abilities. And on the insistence of our team, we even saved the foundering USS Cook from certain destruction, despite the imminent threat of the Praetorian behemoth and her defence turrets.

With the fleet free to support us, we attacked the behemoth. Bravely, Foxienne volunteered to cut the vessels' fuel lines and stall it in the water. This allowed us to close in, disable the defence turret controls and raid the vessel's bridge and capture the rift generator itself. The Sky Raider Captain put up a fierce fight, but he was no match for us and we returned to Admiral Sutter, battered, but victorious.

But our feelings of elation were short lived
For as we returned, we discovered Paragon City was already under attack by Praetorian and Sky Raider forces! With the aid of Citadel and Luminary, we secured Talos, but as we made our way through the sewers, we discovered that even the criminal gangs of this fair city would fight and fall in its defence. Horrors we fought in the sewers there, psychically manipulated creatures used as suicide bombers. With Silvermane's aid, we put them to what rest we could.

But we could not tarry long, for Skyway was fast becoming ruined! Two devastatingly powerful metahumans were responsible for the destruction, the apparant Praetorian doubles of our own upstanding heroes, Fusionette and Faultline. They appeared to weild more power than our own versions, throwing us around like dolls, but they quickly fell to our own assault.

Everywhere, abandoned cars and ruined homes stood testement to the destruction wrought by this interdimensional war. I quickly searched the skies, and spotted the mastermind behind this devastating attack. Or should I say, masterminds. For Colonel Duray of the Sky Raiders had allied with none other than Colonel Duray of the Praetorian attack force, his double!

Sky Raider skiffs harried us with strafing runs while their commander evaded capture with his personal teleporter and sacrificing identical clones of himself, all while the Praetorian Duray mocked us and launched brutal missile barrages. Again and again we had to seek refuge among the ruins of the freeways to regroup and recuperate. My own supplies of Solar energy ran dangerously low in the smoke choked atmosphere, and I think Rocket Girl's rocket boots were running only on her own determination to see this fight through.

But retreat was not an option we could consider, for the whole city was at stake! In the end, both the Durays were nothing but cunning men united by ambition, while we were heroes, united by a common and noble purpose; the defence of Earth.

Such was their performance, their determination and their courage, that I believe each of my teammates would greatly enrich the Liberty Forcem, and I have made recommendations to that effect.

- Prince Solar

Neither Civil's disposition or condition has improved. However, we're got a plan. I requested Sister Dusk to investigate this "Pseudonym", but she's too busy. She's sent her adjutant instead. I've also sent a message to Silas requesting to meet with him- Pseudonym has connections with Clan Eclipse, so perhaps he'll know something.

Q was hurt in a trap today. It appears that the Council are onto his trick. I'm not sure how he got harmed like he did, but he recovered. And, er...His Nictus -may- have called me mum. ... I hope they get past that stage.

It's good to have Andrew back. He seems unmotivated, but he'll come around, I'm sure. He met that Paragon Protector the other day- stopped Conall and Lance attempteing to arrest her. I think T knows her from somewhere...I don't know where.

I believe that's everything from lately.
