Is their a client side .ini file that I can adjust the graphic/audio changes? Also, is their a way to open CoH now without using the ncsoft program also?

There's no .ini file, most of the settings are kept in the registry. You can fiddle with some of the settings using TweakCoH. It's old and outdated but it still works, though it can't change some of the newer settings.

Check out this guide in the Tech forums. Part 3 covers making a shortcut that loads right into CoH:

Guide: How to make the new NCSoft Launcher as unobtrusive as possible.

The registry settings are stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh
You can access them via regedit (the Windows Registry Editor).

Edit: If you're on a Mac, IIRC, Cider stores the registry in some files somewhere as a text file...

Not necessarily. It may be mandatory for updating the game, but I suspect the direct "skip the updater" method might still work... unless they specifically said they are getting rid of that command.

But either way.. the point is we'll all have to have it installed and in working order to be able to update and play... so best to get it sorted out ASAP. lol

They have already or will be removing some (all?) of the -PROJECT switches you used to be able to use to directly launch CityOfHeroes.exe instead of using COHUpdater.exe. I'll have to check it out and see if they still work.

I'm fairly sure this is an NCSoft-mandated change specifically to force everyone to use the launcher.

Even if they do remove the -PROJECT switches, the NCSoftUpdater program HAS to call CityOfHeroes.exe somehow and tell it that it how to load. Odds are they will just change the switches and someone good with a process monitor or decompiler would be able to fairly easily figure out the new switches.

I checked already. My other shortcut still works... but like you implied, it doesn't mean it will still be available afterward.

Did they state they are getting rid of the other tags? I didn't notice that in any announcement, but I could have missed it. If they didn't, then my point still stands that we don't know for sure, and could still be a possibility.

Either way, like I said before, it doesn't negate the fact that people should still get the new launcher working so they can get updates anyway... and with the customization of shortcuts for the new launcher, it'll load just as fast anyway, so there wouldn't really be any need to skip it, IMHO.

The first time the update server croaks without there actually being a new patch will see some Dev give out the secret tag word to bypass the updater so they can get into the game.

From there, the word will spread.

If they just change the arguments around, it'll take all of 30 seconds to figure the new ones out (I already wrote a program that could do that years ago, when testing my own launcher for CoH actually).

If they do sneakier things, people will still be able to figure out what they've done... and really, why would bypassing the updater be a problem to them? I'd say there's even less reason for it to bother them now that they've moved the EULA in-game.

Edit: On the plus side, the NCSoft Launcher uses plain-old HTTP to distribute manifests and patches... looks like resurrecting City Launcher would be fairly easy, along with adding support for updating internally

Where's the fun in that?

(I was also passing stdin/stdout/stderr between the two and recording it, just in case there was any magic going on with that)

Also... I think NCsoft ripped off my manual patching format I used multiple times back when Paragon's patching servers exploded at the start of open betas! (and took it back in the past with them... damn Ouroboros!)
