It looks like the flight control stick in a fighter jet. There's a red protective covering that you flip up when you want to flick the missle switch... or something like that.

my wife thought it was a pirate ship, and the red section was sail 
heck the kinetic combats almost look like a kangaroo 
but i might be a bit bais there

I always thought it was a helmet, with a big, red plume. Yeah, I realize that doesn't make much sense, but I've never looked closely at it until now.
