Playing Games Screws Up Graphics

Flashfox

Posted

Alright, I have NO idea why, but whenever I try to play ANY game, if it's full screen, or windowed and maximized, my graphics instantly screw up.

With CoH, it happens as soon as I get to the character select screen. Different parts of the costume turn into long angular lines that stretch across my screen. Parts of the UI (including the charcter list) vanish.

With CO, it starts at the log in screen, and I can only see random bits and pieces of it.

With LotRO, the latest update runs the game in full screen, and it starts as soon as the Loading bar appears.

With Bejeweled 3, it happens if I go to full screen, but goes away when I go back to windowed mode.

I just installed the latest drivers from nVidia: 266.58_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql.ex e

My next post will contain my HiJack This!, CoH Helper, and DXDiag reports.

you are not going to like what I think.

This sounds like a heat issue and you'll need to replace the graphics card.

tools like that are not precise, nor are they accurate.

They don't measure the actual die temperature.

The only way you get the actual working temp is if you physically take the heatsink off, lap a bit off of the gpu casing, and run a probe straight across the GPU itself.

If you can trace the event of failure to a specific action, in this case the increase of the clock speed and power consumption from the 2D rendering mode to the 3D performance rendering mode, then there is a clear hardware problem at hand.

What you are describing, an immediate failure of the card to render properly in any and all circumstances, strongly resembles a heat or thermal issue.

Now, not to say I don't like telling people I told you So, I've been telling people for a long time now that Nvidia has thermal issues. Nvidia Products Run Hot

Now, if the card is indeed a few months old, you might be able to get it RMA'd. That should be the next step you take.

Contact EVGA and get the card replaced.

I shut the computer all the way off, and let it sit for about 5 mins. Then, I used a can of compressed air to blow the fan on the card, and over the CPU. Rebooted, and now CoH loads and runs fine.

At least, until I exit.

When I shut the game down, it just hangs. I have to open Task Manager, and end it there.

I was about to say that perhaps its eVGA's precision causing the errors. Wasn't that discussed before?

For future reference the "pointy-triangle geometry error" is formally known as "Screen-Tearing" .

It used to happen to me, for some reason during base editing, and I realized it was because my laptop was hot enough to hurt my hand over the GPU when I checked lol.(Also happens when I'm in a rush(being stupid) and forget to lower my settings before launching again for my 2nd account to run at the same time lol)

You might also want to stop all of Hewlett-Packard's bloatware from running. And you have two different anti-spyware programs running at the same time. Remove one of them, ideally Spybot S&D's Teatimer.
Quicktime does not need to run at startup, nor does Adobe's Speedlauncher.

Screen tearing is usually a heat issue. It may not be the graphics card per se, but poor airflow in the computer case. nVidia cards do tend to run hotter than ATI's cards.
Also, I hope you held the fan still while you used compressed air on the card. A fan is driven by an electric motor, but that can be a two-way event; spinning the fan without power will generate an electric current, and blowing compressed air directly onto the fan and allowing it to spin freely can burn out the bearings.

I'd suggest it might be an idea to try improving the cooling first - adding an extra system fan is a cheap option - preferably blowing directly at the GPU - also make sure cables are not obstructing airflow - cable tie them back to the case out of the way.

Per the following link, your HP only has a 300W power supply (http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-...-33968313.html).

If so, then this is more than likely your problem as the GTX460 is probably pushing your supply past its limit.

I use the nVIDIA GTX460 (1GB) card with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor (no overclocking) and my PSU is a 700W model.

Also got a 460 here. I had heat issue's, but buying a 700watt PSU solved it for me.

Well, so far, so good. I had to reboot the computer one last time, and now CoH no longer hangs when I exit.

Let's hope it was just a dust build up...

Also: There's no way the default 300W PSU would have worked with my vidjacard, so I also bought a 600W PSU when I bought the card.

I just relied on what your model number referred to. I am relieved to read that you did not get the 300W PSU, especially since you have over 21k posts over here ;-)

Yeah, it's definitely a GPU overheating issue when you see that. Hopefully it hasn't been happening too long because each time it does it damages the card just a little bit. Maybe not a lot but it helps bump the failure date just a little bit closer.

If the card is still under warranty I would replace it anyway just because. It should not have been having problems at those temperature readings unless it was defective in some way anyway.

And lastly when I had the same problem with a card in the past my solution was to use speedfan to up the fan speed to 100% whenever I was playing CoH. I managed to make it last another couple months that way until I was able to save up for a replacement.
