Is Sci-Fi dead/dying
Everything goes in cycles. Space Sci-fi enjoyed a renaissance, now it's on the decline again until the next upswing.
Space sci-fi is dead in the same way computer gaming is. |
Yeah I agree with Rush Bolt. Keep in mind the amount of time between Star Trek the original and Star Trek Next Generation (The original was cancelled in 1969 and STNG started in 1987 .. 18 years between shows). It actually had a pretty good run once STNG started with at least one variation on the Star Trek theme being on television until Enterprise was cancelled after the 2005 season. During that same time frame you had other Sci Fi hits emerge like Babylon Five and Stargate and I LOVED Farscape and hated to see it discontinued NOT because it wasn't doing well ratings wise but the SciFi channel simply didn't want to continue to spend that much money to produce it
You are dealing with Television producers who automatically see one new show with a slightly original idea do well and within two seasons there are 10 clones of it..
Case in point.. CSI.. begat CSI Miama and CSI NY along with NCIS. Over the years we have had periods where everything was crime dramas, everything was lawyer shows, Hospital shows, etc, etc. Even the whole rash of reality shows started with the very first season of Survivor.. so if you are like me and can't stand things like American Idol.. blame Richard Hatch LOL
At some point some one will come out with another Sci Fi series that becomes popular and by the time it hits its second season there will be three or four more on other channels.
Were always the good guys. In D&D, were lawful good. In City of Heroes were the heroes. In Grand Theft Auto we pay the prostitutes promptly and never hit them with a bat. Leonard

I dont think its just scifi. Honestly i look at the state of TV and with the cancelation of 24 last year, and just barely hanging on to Glee simply because i like their variations on popular music, almost ever show i watch now is on cable. Cable networks seem to be the only place that isnt content on simply running reality shows or dancing/singing contests to pay the bills.
I pretty much only look forward now to new Burn Notices, Royal Pains, Pysch, etc. I am finding Face Off to be kinda fun to watch as a reality/contest show but atleast they found a fun new medium rather then performance to deal with. And im trying out Being Human on Syfy, but it seems kinda emo and whinny for my tastes, im not sure if the original on BBC was like that also. Unfortunately right now everything i would like is either on break or getting ready to go on break, so im expecting a big blank reason to pay for cable until Doctor Who starts up again in April.
The real problem with scifi is finding a way to do it right. To put characters you like, respect, hate, loath etc all into a intresting enviroment and then create the drama. BSG did this really well, so did FireFly. STTNG also i think had a good run though it ended some time back. Problem is that things like SGU just spent 1.5 seasons and only created one character that universally people seemed to give a damn about. That i think more then the earthly alien worlds and stock recycled footage from past series was more of a downer for that show then simply no one caring about scifi.
For star wars, its far from dead. Clone Wars is a great show IMO. And one of the best rated shows on CN right now. And with the 3d work being done to re-re-release the movies next year, we should see a big resurgence with all those newer fans going to the movies. Last time the originals were in theaters was 97 so fans like my 11 year old son were not even born yet to see them on the big screen.
Star Trek, well give it some time. I cant imagine Paramount not going forward with a new movie based universe when you look at the profits from the 2009 film.
I really think the problem sometime is simply the budgets, everyone wants a TV show to look like a movie. I think shows like Doctor Who and even to some extent the STTNG have shown that its ok to sacrifice a bit on your effects budget when you put forward stories people want to see. SGU could have learned alot from that and made smaller story arcs that drew in viewers more quickly with more intrest then taking the space opera multi season view to their story lines.

Yeah, and the current sci-fi trend seems to be alien invasion flicks. I don't know how many have either recently come out or are coming soon, but it must be a dozen at least.

There are many stories to tell after Sheridan left B5 to setup shop on Mimbar, leaving Lockley and the new generation of diplomats on the station to keep the peace. Plus even though there were books that dealt with the telepath war and fate of Centauri Prime/Londo/G'kar I wouldn't object to some B5 movies about those events.
Babylon 4 prequel series: now THIS would be cool. Sinclair/Valen knows what is coming and what MUST occur and must make sure that it DOES occur. Plus he must wrestle with the fact that he cannot leave a message for anyone in the future to warn them about the Earth-Mimbari war as that would likely alter time and prevent any Babylon stations from being built, as well as the fact that he knows he is only supposed to beat the shadows and not break the 1000 year cycle since Sheridan does it and if Valen does it then history again changes and there may be no Babylon stations or Earth-Mimbari war, etc.
It's gonna take smarter writing, and a network smart enough to stick with it. The days of million dollar per episode franchises like TNG are over.
The new BSG was the right idea, but the show was made knowing there was a definite end in mind. A serial probably isn't likely to happen.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
