Best way to make money from tickets and merits
Hello, everyone! You're talking to the plant!
While I don't claim to know the best way, I read your article and noticed you may have missed one of the most important ways to use your reward merits - turn them into hero/villain merits!
Let's look at it economically: 50 reward merits plus 20 million infamy/info/influence equals 1 hero/villain merit. Nothing you do can change this formula, so there's our base.
1 hero merit won't get you many great recipes. HOWEVER, 2 merits will get you ANY non-purple/PvP/Respec recipe you want. This includes such illustrious and universally expensive recipes like the Numina ++, the Miracle +, the Regenerative Tissue +, and the Luck of the Gambler Global Recharge. All of which are almost considered a must for going all out on the Tin Mage and Apex trials.
If you have enough for your toons already, use 2 hero merits, get the recipe, and sell it on the market (crafted or uncrafted - check first for bonus money). When hero merits started, Miracle + were selling in the 250 million range, or 240 merits. Now, for 100 merits and 40 million cash - not a hard feat for a 50 these days - you can get the same recipe.
Oh, and the non-combat purples (Confuse, sleep, immobilize, hold and pet) tend to sell for a LOT less than the combat ones (stun, range, melee, Targeted AOE and PBAOE). I picked up a whole set of confuse (all 6) and 5 sleep purples for the cost of ONE miracle at one point early in I19. 11 purples I needed for one duplicate (albeit expensive) recipe.
As for the tip missions, YES, it gets repetitive at this point. They have added more with each issue. But it's like the newspaper/radio missions - you get through the basics to get to the shiny toy inside. 50 reward merits every other DAY (if you push it) is worth it at high levels - you should easily get the prerequisite 20 million cash for the hero/villain merit conversion.
1 hero merit every other day*20 merits = 40 days. During which time you can still get purples as drops to help fill in the cash or build requirements.
Go for it!

Thanks Plant, I will give that a go. Your advice is always helpful.
I don't have enough merits on some of my toons to try this, so I will go for the random recipe rolls. What range have you had the most success with? I was thinking 30-34.
btw, do you think I am using my AE tickets the best way, by using them for rare salvage?
Also, I quite like running a few tip missions when I first get on. Often I am solo, but I always post in chat in case someone wants to join me. It is a nice easy way to just do a mission or two. I only have a little while some afternoons, and they are usually quite fun missions.
Except for the Carni tips with a Master Illusionist in every other mob. Those tips HURT my Brutes/Tanks which all have Psi def/res as a weakness.
Helps to get the M.Ill badges but.... ouch!!!!
The best use for tickets depends on how fast you can generate them. If you're one of those people who can reach the per-mission cap (1500) in 10 minutes, then a Gold Roll every 40-ish minutes can be very lucrative.
If you can't get tickets very fast, then buying rare salvage is probably the best way to use them. It's pretty much the only guaranteed income from tickets, and some rares are spiking pretty high right now.
Bronze rolls are an interesting beast. They can be a great source of income, but you have to be able to stockpile several tickets to be worth it. To put it in layman's terms:
This is the Bronze Roll pool:
These are in the back of the truck:
But they're mixed into this:
For 60-75 tickets, you get to take ONE shovelfull out of the back of the truck.
Most of the time, you're gonna get a pile of crap. Nobody really wants to buy it, but sometimes, there'll be someone who needs some manure, so they'll give you a bit of cash for it. And if you take enough scoops out, eventually, you'll pull out one of those gold nuggets.
As to why people suggest certain level ranges:
10-14 and 45-50 are the smallest pools, since they don't have all the mid-level recipes. Since there's fewer recipes in the pool, there's a larger chance of getting one of the good ones.
10-14 has the Karma -KB, the Steadfast Protection -KB and Def/Res and the Regenerative Tissue +Regen. Bonus points if you're level 10 and roll one of these.
45-50 Has Crushing Impact and Thunderstrike, which are uncommons, so they're easy to roll, but still fairly popular. There's also parts of several popular sets: Mako's Bite, Numina's Convalescence, etc.
35-39 is the smallest pool which includes Kinetic Combat (not to be confused with Kinetic Crash). Kinetic Combat gives a HUGE bonus to Smashing/Lethal defense, so it's quite popular. As a result, the prices on it can be fairly high at times.
30-34 is an interesting spot. Only a handful of recipes have a maximum level lower than 30, and (not counting purples) only two sets have a minimum level higher than 34 (and they're both snipes). As a result, almost anything that can be earned with a bronze roll can be found in this pool. However, compared to the other ranges, you've doubled the number of gold nuggets, and quadrupled (or more) the amount of manure.
For the Merits, you've already got the best advice you're going to get: Convert them to A-Merits and buy big-ticket Rare recipes (don't waste them on purples or PVP IOs, the return ranges from slightly better to WAY worse, and it takes longer to get anything at all). If the 20 million is too much for you to come up with, run Tips to get A-Merits the "normal" way, and get one or two of the good recipes, and use that money to convert the merits.
@Roderick
I thank you all for your great advice.
Excellent explanation Roderick, that helped a great deal.
Also depends on your level. I quite often run levels 1-10 in AE. The only sensible use of tickets at level 10 is to bronze roll them, because the -KB IOs are a relatively common result and sell well, and you have a small chance of the regen tissue and kismet uniques. Just roll the tickets, delete the crap unless you have a lot of patience, and craft the good ones.
At 50, you have the full choice, bronze roll at 10-14 (lvl 30 steadfast res/defs, the two -KBs and a few other useful things), 30-34 (what you can get from 10-14 plus some other useful things that start at 15 or 20, but in a larger pool of recipes), or 35-39 (to get a load of useful uncommon IOs that you might want to use, and where the average non stellar uncommon will sell for more.
A-Merits if you have the patience, I feel it's most lucrative to buy the PvP 3%def IO. I bought 3 of these for 30 A-merits each, and sold them for 4BN each via the market forum. To make the same $/merit off LotGs, you'd need to be selling them for 295M or so with market fees.
Ordinary merits, either roll them or convert them to A-merits.
If you decide to get into bronze rolling, I'd recommend levelling a load of alts to level 10, not necessarily on the same server you normally play, and using them to sell the loot. You can either use SG storage or email to get stuff to them, and they can send the cash back.
It's true. This game is NOT rocket surgery. - BillZBubba
Personally I find a recipe such as an end proc as way of example, or a lotg defence that has a buy value of say 100 to 500 thousand or so vs made enhancement sale of say 10 to 15 mil, I note the rare salvage and then use ae tickets to buy heaps of said rare salvage than I bid on 100 or so recipes and make them up to sell for about a 10 mil profit a pop. I usually get 100 to 200 mil a log in and then upgrade to more expensive recipes as I get the capital. I have found as a rule about 50 mil profit per recipes for the more expensive ones is about the maximum I have been able to achieve. Often rare recipes with 3 particular enhancements capabilities such as dam/end/rech are the best to look into.
I have a set that I always use and always have about 4 toons selling and buying at all times and I have one ae farmer churning out the rare salvage
Also the 2 bil a toon limit is pretty annoying they could keep the market cap at 2 bil and allow toons to hold say 100 bil to alleviate swapping cash between toons or fake bids to hold cash in limbo.

I know there is a dedicated forum for answers to this, but whenever I look there I always feel slightly more confused.
Just wondering what ways you peeps use your Merits and AE Tickets to get the most influence. I have a few old toons that have a few tickets and merits and I want to make as much as I can. I don't have a lot of either, so can't experiment as much as I would like, so I thought I would ask for some suggestions.
AE Tickets: currently I just use them to get the rare salvage but I have heard various people say you are better off rolling for recipes. But I hear so many different opinions on which, like Bronze 10-14, 30-34, 35-39, etc.
Merits: I tend to forget about these, as I don't get to TF/SF as often as I would like. Hopefully that will change with new update. Maybe we can run a few more (fingers crossed). I would like to go for recipe rolls, but as I don't have oodles of merits, it would be nice to hit the best level range for the random roll. Think last time I did a couple it was 30-34. Seem to recall that being OK.
Hero/Villain Merits: I was planning on getting to 20 and getting a purple, but I just don't seem to do enough tip missions to get there. Once again, hopefully will have the opportunity to do more now.
I really look forward to hearing from you all.
