Earth/fire possibilities

FIrst forum post, whee. Anyway, I have decided to remake all my characters after returning to CoH from my free month after purchase. (I started dreaming of character creating and massive power frenzies in parties again).

Ahem, getting myself off point.

Anyway, I know a bit about most classes but NOTHING of Dominators. I've been reading the guides here and wonder what Earth/Fire can do. I didn't see a guide about it in particular. Does it work well? Is earth/earth a safer combination?

Welcome to the forums!

I just finished up an Earth/Fire Dom and its a real beast! You have the best crowd control in the game (imho) paired with the best ranged damage set in the game (also imho). I took the ice epic for the shield and sleet/ice storm combo. I just watch spawns melt away while I sit in relative safety. Great combo! (imho)

I will second the carnage that earth/fire/ice brings down upon everything. Mines only 44 atm with SO's but its still silly on just those.

Quicksand/sleet/earthquake/fire breath/combust/consume is my main aoe madness.

I am set up to do the 'ghetto hold' of immob+stun that stone cages and stalagmites when qs and quake are down for almost no down time.

I'm slowly putting together the pieces for a perma build as my second build. no mids out of me but in the thread earlier people give set suggestions to get there.

I know people love the concept of "ghetto hold" but the immob is pretty much unnecessary. Things aren't going to wander far, especially if you drop Quicksand as well.

In fact given how ******* fugly Stone Cages are I consider them more a hindrance than a help.

Here's what I'm working towards. I just hit 28. This is the final build with Set IOs in place. As of now, the toon only has common IOs slotted (and I only put those in place at 27 from SOs). I won't go to the set IOs until 47, and then I'll be using one build for commons and the other build you can switch to for the Set IOs.

Went with the Fire APP, although I considered going Ice (and may still do so). I'm assuming that with the Fire APP I'll get more synergy with the damage from the /Fire secondary and I can BURN! things faster.

I get 73.75% global recharge like this, which is enough for perma-Domination. There are no Purples/PvP sets, as I can't afford them.


If anyone has any comments on slotting/IO choices I'd love to hear them.

I can only assume IO Muling is the reason Stone Cages is 6 slotted while Stalagmites, Fossilize, Gasses and Quicksand are a little underslotted? (not to mention Tough not having any slots at all, even if you're softcapped surely it's nice to have 2 extra slots in here just as a fallback? )

Actually, I would think that Tough would be a complete waste on any build that is soft-capped to S/L. If you think about it, you're only taking 5% of S/L damage already, then Tough is stopping 12.75% on top of that (roughly 20% slotted). So, in total, Tough is really only giving you 1% damage resistance to S/L compared to a build with no S/L defense. For the endurance cost 1% S/L resistance is not worth it, IMHO.

That's bad math logic when you consider that 5% is the Best Case figure for how effective being at the softcap is and a lot of the time if you're in the position of not being in that best case scenario (say if you're fighting anything over even level whom all get Acc bonuses against you)

If you've got Tough anyway (which is does as he needs it to get Weave) and can in any way slot it up (even with one more Resistance IO) it's worth running IMO, especially in situations where you're facing any end game enemy who for whatever reason guts your softcap (DE, Defensive Debuffs, say from the ITF, enemies with ToHit bonuses, either through powers or a higher base ToHit chance).

Like I said I can't see the build, and maybe it is that tight in terms of slots. But if not it could well be worthwhile moving a slot into Tough if possible in order to give yourself a little more breathing room.

Yeah, tough is just a mule for the steadfast +3%, I had to take it to get weave so might as well throw something useful in it. I don't run it in normal play but I will throw it on in crazy situations. Weather or not its really helping much when I use it is open for debate, honestly I think its more of a placebo effect, I just feel a lil safer.

Bottom line is that without running it I survive almost everything. Sure I'll eat floor on occasion but who doesn't?
