The Ice tank in question was like 2 bubbles off 42, so I decided to wait till he dinged to do it. Sorted it all out last night juuuust before the server went down for the patch, heh. Madly buying SOs, etc while the red text glared at me. Probably only finished with a minute or two to spare.
I understand that. I took my old, 3 years mothballed level 44 Warshade out for double XP and got him to 50 on his old build because I didn't want to waste time respec'ing over the weekend. Now when I have a chance I'll make the changes.

I do, and am IOing him for +recharge as well as slotting Siphon Life as a heal. Somewhat unconventional, but experience with high-end content has shown me the value of a spammable self-heal while tanking overlevel opposition.

I'm still taking a bunch of +Def pool powers in order to have a high base to work with, and plan to add the PvP +3 Def unique as well. I may slot what few res powers I have with Impervium Armor to 3 slots (incl the +3 Psi Res IO) for some Psi +def to stack with the pool +def, although I'll have to see how the build plays out as it's still in flux at the moment.

Siphon Life is the reason I went with DM over the other sets, as I've leveled other Defense-based sets to 50 without a heal and really wished I'd had one when bosses or higher mananged to break through my 'shell'.

That's not to say Ice Armor needs such a backup plan, but the way I build I would rather have and not need than need and not have, especially as I tend to IO for extreme tanking so that if the team is light on support it's not a problem.

Since I took Shovel (Battle Axe) for theme reasons, I went with Aid Self. MOST of the time it works a treat. When I am being just hammered I can't get it to go off, but an AOE knockdown and I can usually get that beautiful green number up in time (if not, I can always hibernate, heh).

As the aggro king, does Ice need Taunt or can it rely on it's two auras?

Current:

Gadgetron - Grav/TA (Lbrty)

I went without it, but i kind of regret doing so. It can hold aggro pretty well, but sometimes when i activate hibernate my target leaves me and goes for my teammates.

Taunt is still great IMO. The two taunt auras will let you easily take aggro from those SD scrappers, but that's about it in terms of threat generation. I use taunt to get mobs off of softies, pull AV's, and to keep ranged mobs on me without moving. The taunt auras don't let you do that.

How is the survivability of Ice?

Does it take a large effort to reach the softcap?

Does it have any synergy with Kinetic Melee?
1. With IOs and the fighting pool it's decent and different from my Invulnerability tank (who's also got IOs and the fighting pool), and while both seem sturdy - the Invulnerabilty one "feels" sturdier BUT I enjoy tanking with my Ice Tank more.

2. I'm not sure what one considers a large effort but 3 sets of Smashing Haymakers, Taunt slotted with either 4 Mocking or 6 Zingers, Steadfast IO in Permafrost, Combat Jumping and Fighting Pool (for Weave) and I'm at 50% S/L (or slightly over).

3. I've only played (to a high degree or to 50) SS and Fire. I cant imagine that Ice would be bad with any primary.

Related to the topic, but a little off. Does Energy Absorbtion stack?

Energy absorption gets a certain amount of defense for each enemy and a bonus amount for the 1st. The per enemy amount stacks between applications, but the 1st enemy bonus does not.

I got my ice/mace tank to 50 this week. Just now I did an ITF. I am not fully IOed yet, have no purple enhancements, and didn't slot my alpha until right before I logged off, and I rocked it. I essentially soloed the 1st 2 missions. It was a long road to 50 for this tank, but I was very pleased with how it came up (and certainly will get better with IOs etc). I focused on getting enough recharge for EA to be up often and that made all the difference, both in end and defense. I didn't die the entire TF and I didn't have my health below around 75-80% throughout. I thought I would rely more on hibernate (my lvl 49 choice), but I didn't use it.

Someones tanky could drop first for simply being the better aggro magnet. Many a reason.
