The Oscar Nominations
Yes, yes I know, blockbusters have been nominated and win. But look at best and supporting actor and actress nominees and tell me how many of those films had a wide release (<2000 theaters) or broke $100 million domestically?
Yes this isn't a popularity contest, it's about good movies and good acting but I would hazard a guess that the majority of the films with best and supporting actor/actress nods only popped up in art theaters and the only one near me (within 25 miles) closed last year. Edit: Or were only released mid December in limited release to qualify. Rabbit Hole?
All I'm saying is there is going to be a lot of the general population who never even heard of most of those films, except being mentioned winning awards.

They opened it up to 10 last year (if memory serves me right they originally did larger numbers but it was pared down in recent decades) to allow more nominations for independents, genre flicks and animated movies.
Edit- It looks like they started doing the 5 picture nominations in 1944 up until last year; before that there didn't seem to be a set number(1934 had 11 and '35 had 12) . |
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

But anyhoo. This year five of the nominees (from both best supporting actor and actress combined) were in films that have either grossed more than $100 million so far, or have released to more than 2000 theaters. Both The Town and The Fighter released in well over 2k theaters and True Grit is in over 3k theaters and has grossed almost $140 million domestically so far. They're actually doing better (according to those requirements) than the best actor/actress nominees. Only three of them meet your criteria.
Oh, and five of the best picture nominees fit that criteria too. I think you're neglecting the fact that 'blockbusters' very consistently win the academy awards. Going as far back as 1990 there've been a total of two films that had a total gross of less than $100 million and four that grossed less than $100 million domestically and were shown in less than 2k theaters.
Don't get me wrong, a lot of the times I really don't agree with the Academy Awards, and there are a lot of films I honestly though have been robbed with many more that their being nominated just baffles me. However it's a stretch to imply that they don't showcase 'big' films along with the more 'artsy' ones.
*I tend to get all my movie 'numbers' from Box Office Mojo.

I only have one hope, and that's for an absolute nobody in Hollywood terms but a bonafide legend in Australia in Jackie Weaver getting a Best Supporting Actress award.
She's sixty-three, a damn good actor and I hope she doesn't get overlooked after the awards for work in America. Look her up, she's acted with all the Australian 'big names' like Jackman, Kidman and Crowe.

Alright, I know we've all been asked not to do this, but I have to say what's in my heart--I can't help.
I hate the Academy Awards. I have some reasons for this that sound pretty good on paper, but the reality is that...they hardly ever pick my choices.
That being said, I'm utterly fascinated with them.
I never watch the awards, but I enjoy discussing the merits of the nominees with my friends and I root for certain people to win and I can't wait to find out after they're over who won and I'm offended when my picks don't win.
I don't want to care about the awards, but I totally do. I can't help it.
And seeing as how I've gone this far, I'll throw in my two cents.
Best Picture: Should be: Inception
Will be: The Social Network
Best Director: Should be: Christopher Nolan (I know he's not nominated)
Will Be: David Fincher
Don't get me wrong, I dig Fincher's work and I think Aronofsky is a genius and the Coens, I mean, even my least favorite of thier films I've seen more than once, but the only other director out there right now that can come anywhere near to what Nolan's doing is Danny Boyle, and he's not nominated either. This is another reason I hate the Academy Awards: I don't understand their reasoning behind alot of the choices they make. Sometimes I do understand and just don't agree, but in this case...I just don't get it.
Best Actor: Should be: James Franco
Will be: Colin Firth
Although there are actually alot of great contenders for this one and God knows Colin Firth's performance is amazing, but I still personally prefer Franco.
Best Actress: Should be: Natalie Portman
Will be: Natalie Portman
She hasn't done anything worthwhile with her career since The Professional...until Black Swan. She's easily the best nominee.
Best Supporting Actor:Should be: Christian Bale
Will be: Geoffrey Rush
Rush is great, don't get me wrong, but wow...I actually think Bale started smoking crack in real life for The Fighter. He's unreal.
Best Supporting Actress: Should be:Hailee Steinfeld
Will Be: I'm gonna say she has a shot at it. So, yeah, Hailee Steinfeld.
Like most people, I don't too care much about the rest of the catagories, although I will say that it's a shame that they disqualified Clint Mansell's score for Black Swan. Hans Zimmer should still win for Inception, but I'd have liked Mansell to have been nominated for Black Swan as I've been a fan of his for years.
Okay, I'm done.
Predictions were made, let's see how uber we were.
Wow I will admit I was way off my predictions.
The only film that I saw ahead of time this year was Inception, which immediately jumped to somewhere around my top three favorite movies of all time. I knew it didn't have a chance at best picture, and I wasn't surprised when it didn't get writing either, but I am pleased that it still managed to get four wins in the technical categories.
Now it's time for my annual adding of a crapload of movies that sound awesome to my Netflix list.
Proud member of Everyday Heroes (Infinity Heroes), Dream Stalkers (Infinity Villains), Devil Never Cry (Freedom Heroes), Enclave of EVIL (Pinnacle Villains), Phobia (Infinity Villains), Les Enfant Terribles (Freedom Villains), Gravy Train (Virtue Heroes), and more!

By the time the Oscars aired last night I've seen Inception, Toy Story 3 and The Social Network.
Now I skipped over to the Oscars every few minutes so I wasn't as bored as some may have been if I watched the whole thing from start to finish. The parts I hung around for I enjoyed. Also James Franco could have been an animatronic and nobody would notice. And someone needs to cut Anne Hathaway off whatever she was on because I could here her whoop every time a presenter was announced, sounded like that super school spirit girl that's found in every high school. I think she went through ten dresses during the broadcast.
The good news was I missed most of the terrible skits that was put on, except for the Jude Law, RDJ banter leading up to the special effects Oscar.
Happy that Trent Reznor won best soundtrack for The Social Network. The special on the music that's on the 2nd disk of the DVD set was fascinating to watch.
Biggest wow moment was when I flipped over and saw Mandy Moore and Zack "Chuck" Levi sing the nominated song from Tangled. Forgot they prefer to get the original singers for each song. And Randy Newman has been nominated 20 times?? And they weren't all Disney or Pixar movies??
My biggest surprise was that Kirk Douglas was still alive and walking. I expected him to be in a Captain Pike chair if at all.
Edit: Lastly, Batman is a ginger? Well at least his beard was.

No Country For Old Men is one of my favorite films ever.
So I'm pulling for True Grit.
