I can't guarantee the accuracy of this, since I wasn't around yet, but what I've heard is that in CoH beta there was originally only one starting zone, Atlas Park. Galaxy City was added in later, although still before launch. At that time, Kings Row's trainer was Back Alley Brawler and there was a gate to Perez Park at the spot you're talking about. Then they added in Galaxy, gave it the gate to Perez, moved BaBs there, and created Blue Steel for Kings.

If any old-timers can confirm, correct, or deny, that would be nice. This is the understanding I've had about it for a good while.

I logged in expecting to find one of those big gates you see in Founders, there also a big gate in the southern end of PP. In that big lake that used to be the cool hang out spot.

The blueside Siren's Call entrance used to look just like this, and then we got PVP zones. I always thought this was going to be the Warburg entrance and then they decided to use a helicopter instead.

If the devs were to just turn that into a highway to somewhere, what's on that side of KR?

I found a map and it would just bump into Atlas.

Old player here.
This was the prez park enterance back in the first beta of COH. Shortly before going live, the devs added a 2nd start zone, GC moved kings down when it was added. (look at map of king and you will see that it fits with prez's map.) The devs placed a new gate in GC for the park, king's gate was left with out a place to connect to because COH was about to go live. The devs didn't have time to rebuild king to take out the gate area, so they just left it.

A guess:

It's a leftover strongpoint from the Rikti War. With the two guard towers and the wall surrounding it, it looks like it was designed to give troops some cover to fight from.

If that's the case, it's kind of a nice touch that stuff like this is still around reminding people that this city was the site of a major conflict not that long ago. I mean, you still see Civil War era forts standing in places, and medieval castles are still all over the countryside in Europe, so it isn't too farfetched that some fortified areas would still exist in a city that was a full-blown battleground less than a decade ago.

Heck, this young whippersnappers don't even remember when you couldn't have more than one armor on at a time, or when Temp Invulnerability was a click power, or when Scrappers had only four secondaries.

They need to get off our lawn!

More fun trivia: if I remember correctly, Back Alley Brawler was called the Back Street Brawler back then.
