Hats

I don't often make characters with hats.

I guess I don't often wear a hat in RL although I do like the style of them and they often serve a purpose... but they are unfashionable and often we are more challenged by social mores than personal desire.

However I have a couple of toons that just simply need hats. Except that the hats I want aren't even there (how about a tall stovepipe?) and even if I get the hat... the hair is junk.

I understand the problem: It's tricky enough in a second game about life that I play a lot and that has many many more anchor points and there are serious technical issues. I appreciate that.

In this world all the "physical" content is dev created and so by definition flexibility is limited. Even in the other aforementioned environment, getting the mix between head size/hair/hat is a balance but that's largely left to the user not the dev.

That said it isn't a huge ask to ask for more. In this game, hats = hair. The physical shape is almost as important as the colour choice. 2 colours for hair, 2 colors for a hair and a hat. Wearing a hat seriously limits the colour of your your hair before you even get on with style.

I want a bent stovepipe hat with long hair. I want the hat to be black with a red feather and I want long grey/blue hair.

As things stand it's impossible which is sad - but I have a sneaking suspicion it would be a relatively easy thing to fix. The obvious answer is an extra anchor point for hat, thus devolving hat from hair but if that is totally undoable with current models then how about every hat with a choice of hair?

This is very much a QoL issue but it's been bugging me increasingly over time. The hat/hair ratio is an increasing issue for me now

I just want the option to remove the hair from the hats. Robots and skeletons and other hairless characters need hats too.

This first please.

Then maybe later we can get hair and hats separated.

And among MANY other good hats that we are missing is a few good Flat Caps and some Tam o' Shanters.

I also want option to remove the ears when having a hat. Like when my catears poke out, the human ears are still there. Or at least give some hairstyle options with hats that cover the ears.

Same. Maybe we'll have a wacky zany hat booster pack in the future, who knows.

I am not sure how it would have to work. But Maybe a sub option, like the Short, long, no Hair. I know that means alot of work for the art department, but that small step would being lots of love to them.

Hats with customizable hair shouldn't be as technically challenging as it sounds, considering each hat can come with three or four version of hair - none, short, long, something else. However, the problem is that each hair option would have to be unique to each hat, making for a LOT of work for the art team. You can't just use regular hairs and put hats on top, because hats would normally compress hair they're placed over, which can't happen with a 3D mesh unless it's done manually (or via technology CoH doesn't have) meaning unacceptable clipping.

Precedent for this already exists with Shields, more specifically the Targe and Tribal shields which allow you to pick from a small selection of custom doodads to place over the existing shield.

Ears, similarly, could work like that as well. All heads can be designed without ears, with the Ears category given a "none" option.

Of course, Standard Code Rant may apply.

SHE can have a hat with long hair.
So WHY are we stuck with the god damned freaking horrible bald Cabal hat? Hmm? There is NO good excuse for that;

Sailor's cap, Chef's hat, a decent crown(not that silly BK thing we have now), maybe even one of those 'upside down post-hole digger' hats that the Pope sometimes wears.

And with full masks, too. If I'm wearing a mask that covers my ears they shouldn't just be sticking out there the same colour as the mask. It's a mask, not paint.
