Lag since the server move
I've noticed there's a change in lag since we had our servers relocated.
It seems to me there's a direct correlation to automobiles. When we had the servers in Germany, the lag was like a BMW: Everyone had one and if you didn't you wanted one and it was high quality, and lasted forever. Now they're moved to the USA the lag is like a Chevrolet: Badly constructed and consumes shedloads of bandwidth, but never lasts long. |
My ping has gone up since the servers moved to the US, but my lag has decreased massively.
My ping went from 160ish to 250ish, however with the Frankfurt servers I got frequent but irregular red spikes on the netgraph, lost packets both inbound and outbound, and the experience was choppy as hell.
Since the changeover, I've had none of that choppiness and the netgraph is in general a sea of unininterrupted and even green.
I know that I can't speak for anyone but myself, but for me, I'm happy with the new situation.

The above post may contain Cynicism, sarcasm and/or pessimism. If you object to the quantities contained, then tough.
Yeah, count me as confused as hell about the analogy too, but what Canine said above rings true here:
Some increase in Ping.
Way less Dropped/Lost In Packets.
Less Consignment House Shernanigans.
Outcome: Smoother play experience all around, both in missions and out of them.
Gotta agree with Zortel.
Less lost packets, less red and yellow spikes (none actually).
And the mothership raid on sunday was actually playable, we had 6 or 7 teams and i didn't experience any powerlag (graphics lag yes, but thats due to my poo comp). As opposed to when the servers were in germany and 3 teams would cause like 5 secs of power lag.
The only thing i noticed was my ISP dropped connection twice during the raid, if the raid was cause of it, or something else. i dunno. Probably just some random fluke.
The only noticeable lag i've seen so far, is when using elevators in missions. I always get a second of rubberbanding when i exit an elevator.
I've ran 1 or 2(ish) ITF since the transfer and I can attest that they're now smoother than a baby's bottom. I do, however, experience the odd powerlag now and then and very infrequent rubberbanding. But all in all, I'd say it was a smoother experience than before.

Add to that that I can now use the market without having to 'claim' the same item 3 times. And that almost all the lag in Lag Hill on the ITF is fixed and I couldn't be happier with the new servers.

I had one Massive lag spike on.. um... thursday or friday night.. and got DC'd. Otherwise running better than ever.
I have to admit that being based in Germany I don't recall that I ever suffered much from lag. But now I do. Yesterday's play session on the almost deserted server Zukunft was pretty choppy. I don't want to imagine how it must have been on the English servers which indicated their business upon login with two yellowish dots on the login screen.
I really hope that the servers weren't moved to appease the English players whose ISPs seem to have a notorious bad routing to German servers, while at the same time forgetting about all the real European players.
In case it was a resource constraint maybe someone could assign the same amount of resources to Zukunft as they are assigned to the English and American servers? Please?

Since the server move my game experience is far better. No lag spikes, no Dropped/Lost Packets, and WW is faster now.
So everything working better for me, at least from Spain
Wentworths is a dream to use (no more "has it placed? has it? Oops, no, drag it again... has it placed...").
Ping is elevated to the 220-250 region (where before I would typically see 150-180), and I defy anyone to actually notice an extra 70ms on signal return, but packet loss has been almost completely eliminated.
For my wife's computer, which as seen some utterly AWFUL lag at times (it's an older machine and gets hammered in high-population areas), there are still some punches when she hits somewhere with a lot of people, but they're shorter than before, and (oddly) "cleaner" (previously she would frame-lock for a couple of seconds, then stutter, before rubberbanding - now it just pauses for that same couple of seconds, no stuttering, and doesn't seem to rubberband as much).
An extra 70ms of ping is essentially meaningless until you get into things like full-on attack chaining for optimum DPS, and even then chaining attacks effectively eliminates the difference - so the fight starts and ends 70ms later than it did before? Ow. The pain.
All in all, for me, a service improvement.

It would be interesting to see if it's just the UK who have better service, or if the rest of the EU (barring the Germans clearly from Aleph's message) are also seeing improvement.
I think most of us who posted above are UK players.
I'm from Spain and I'm having a better service too.

Just about everyone outside of Germany, however, had problems. Often lots of them.
It's kind of a shame that now you're having issues and everyone else's experience has improved, but I'm afraid that, once again, it's an economic decision. It's become cheaper for them to maintain the EU servers in the US datacentre, so now the rest of us EU folks get a better service, and yours is reduced.
Sorry, but now you're getting to see what we've suffered for nearly 6 years.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
I'm based in England (Norfolk).
We ran a all Fender Itf last night. For the first time almost since the Itf started we ran all the way up lag hill. I found that frame rate was between 15 to 25 most of the time but now again dropped to single figures. In the past I would have had a slide show all the way frame rate 1 to 10 if I was lucky.
So for me a thumbs up
But a Turkish member of the team was having problems with map servers and DCs

South east europe here (Greece) ..... before the transfer, i had nasty lag in Cap, Mercy and GV, also the 3rd mission of ITF was really a drag for me.... now all of the above is totally gone..... Although the last 3 nights i experienced power lag in the 4th mission of ITF

UK here.
I've noticed a marginal improvement in performance and almost no lag.
The only time I did notice lag was for 20 minutes or so last week on Defiant - and we awere all getting the same lag.
I'm happy with the server move

Since the move I have better responsiveness in WW but more lag spikes in all other parts of the game.
Not unplayable but the return of the dreaded rubber-banding
But on a brighter note the sun is shining and its warm enough to go to the beach in November if the lag gets me down
Offhand, I don't recall what the ping was prior to the move, but it's now about 220-250.
I've noticed little or no difference in actual game play, but I did notice that the pedestrians and traffic were smoother than they were a week or two ago.
I don't use Wentworths enough to comment.
