COH on iPad
How were you playing it?
Well, slow at first. Activating powers is weird because of the whole finger motion thing on iPhones and ipads. My main problem was when I wanted to talk in channel switching channels, selecting the channel and anything requiring a right click on the PC version. Bringing up the keyboard (which overlays part of the game thereby blocking view) is akward.
Graphics aren't high end so the shadows are non-existent. Other than that, it felt cool.
I had no idea that ipads could even install cox, much less run it.
Ignoring anyone is a mistake. You might miss something viral to your cause.
It's not as hard when you use a Bluetooth keyboard. You just have to figure out the mac keyboard commands.
I wonder if I can use a PC bluetooth and have it work better...
iOS is a completely different operating system than MacOS X, not a stripped down version of the same thing. The structure of the apps used for the iPhone and the iPad are significantly different from that of OS X, so I suppose I'm going to have to assume you're streaming this to your iPad from a VPN server.
Basically, ipads are stripped down macs. |
Anyone experiment with touchscreen play? |
At the moment, the gaming industry is quite happy to experiment with casual games for portable touchscreen devices like the iPad and smartphones. The iPhone/iPad MMORPG Pocket Legends, for instance, started by stripping down its entry for the genre to the bare essentials and has been gradually building up features, but their primary goal was something that plays naturally on touchscreen/mobile devices.
You are correct. I am using splahtop to port my pc to my iPad.

are you talking about Splashtop Remote? http://splashtopremote.com/
Anyways, as to your original question, I think you asked if the developers at Paragon Studios had experimented with touch-screen play, given that you posted in the technical issues forum. Touch-screen gaming is probably never going to be implemented in City of Heroes, and I don't think the developers here are going to focus on the tech.
While Multi-pointer / Touch development has been under development for years, such as MPX which dates back to 2005, City of Heroes, as a game, was designed without such input in mind.
The case in point here is everytime somebody wanders around asking about CoH on a Gamepad. Some of lightly snicker and have to refrain from responding, "you play with a gamepad then the team will be asking you to please go back to keyboard and mouse. CoH's interface was largely designed to be navigated with a standard keyboard and mouse, and as such the game makes several inherent assumptions about key combinations and interface placement.
This was one of the reasons why Google decided to not use an existing Linux window manager / desktop interface for it's Android OS. Compiz, Kwin, Metacity, Mutter, Xfwm, Fluxbox, Blackbox, you name it, none of them really fit the objectives of a purely touch designed interface. The interface inherent assumptions and action combinations are also why Google told vendors to not put Android 2.2 on screens larger than 7", and is working on larger screen support for Android 3.x: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/n...-potential.ars
Now, as to whether or not you can make touch-screen work like a mouse, well, obviously, you can.
huh? Splashtop itself is a Linux and doesn't run on iPad.

It's sort of a necro, sorry, but it was linked from a more recent thread.
I've seen Splashtop and Teamviewer, they're both nice for connecting to your home PC and doing some things, but fail a bit with others, especially when it comes to games.
But there's also everyAir which is apparently made to be used for gaming, with a supposedly good framerate and a gaming-centric control scheme. iPad app is out now, with iPhone app coming in a few weeks. Unfortunately I don't have an iPad so I can't try out their app until they release the iPhone version but the videos look promising.
Yeah used something similiar to get it to run on my pocket pc. Fun stuff that. as for running it natively, my 8.9 inch netbook does it pretty well. although CoH is on minimum details, on the tiny screen it actually looks pretty good
I we'll see more of this though. smaller and smaller components giving us more and more powerful devices. This time next year, CoH running Natively on something that'll go in your pocket, more than likely. As for controlling it, touch screen works ok, but a little wireless mouse would be ideal. As far as an onscreen right click, i had one of my pda application buttons mapped to a toggle, if its on, right click, if its off, left click.
Combat Kangaroos, Justice Server. First 50's
Jirra Roo Plant/Storm/Stone/Musculature Controller
Combat Kangaroo Rifle/Energy/Mace/Spiritual Blaster
Kung Fu Kangaroo Martial Arts/Reflexes/Body/Spiritual Scrapper
Tribal Arc Shield/Elec/Mu/Spiritual Tanker
So I was playing COH on my iPad the other day when I had a thought about mouse controls and touchscreens. Anyone experiment with touchscreen play?
