"The Hobbit" may not film in New Zeland

So, due to a dispute with New Zealand actors' unions, production of 'The Hobbit' may be moved to England or eastern Europe.

I'm guessing this is just a bargaining chip to producers and WB are using to get what they want.

Honestly at this point I am just glad they will be making the movie.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

Besides I imagine much of any kind of "background" or "scenery" could be CGI'd if needed.
Still it'd be nice to know they were actually in New Zealand just to provide some kind of 'continuity' to the other LotR movies.

Oh good lord I hope they don't do something like that.

I've yet to see a film or show where they did that and it actually looked any good.

I think it looks good when it's super-stylized like Sin City, 300, Casshern, or... wassitcalled... Immortale. If they're looking for visual continuity with the LoTR trilogy though, outlook not so good.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

Sorry, you're right. Let me correct myself, I meant I've never really seen a movie or show filmed that way that looked convincing enough to make me think the people were actually there. It always looks just a little off. It certainly can work beautifully in the more stylized films out there though.

I'm sure eventually we'll get there though, and who knows, it might even be soon but not quite yet.

Heck, practical effects still usually look better to me than CGI in most movies.

Let me clarify what I meant: I wasn't saying they'd use OBVIOUS CGI like 300 or Sin City.

What I was talking about is if they had to put something like a mountain in the background to make where they're filming look a little more like the New Zealand outdoor scenes in the LotR movies it would relatively easy and convincing to do. This Hobbit movie is likely going to have a multi-hundred million dollar budget so I'm pretty sure they're going to be able to use the best CGI technology available. At any rate the chances that this movie would "look" bad no matter what they do is almost impossible.

Maybe I am not seeing any of this in the articles, but didn't anyone foresee the Hobbit being made when they were preparing for LotR? They didn't add in a clause saying something like we reserve the rights to come back at some future time to shoot one more movie?

I imagine they had some basic plans/ideas that when/if the Hobbit got made that they'd try to use New Zealand again for filming. But I guess if the union disputes got bad enough the government could threaten to pull their permits.

As sleestack implied I'll bet they'll work out some deal to make everyone happy. I'm betting the union was just trying to pitch a fit in order to get as much money from this production as possible.

Oopsie

It could be a bargaining chip but the studio may also have decided to make an example of this case, showing the unions that now is not the time to pull a stunt like this.

Weren't the rights to The Hobbit still goofy at the time the LoTR trilogy was being made? I could be wrong, but I don't think they got it cleared up until after the last movie hit theatres.

I just hope the union pat themselves on the back for driving out one of the biggest movie franchises ever to be shot in NZ. Good job.

Reminds me of the French and their strike over raising the retirement age from 60 to 62. I'm just waiting for their unintentional blow back from their actions beyond fuel shortages and garbage piling up.

The Hobbit has separate film rights from LOTR, and were owned by someone else. There was some huge major saga about it all that I just don't care about anymore, but that is part of why it has taken so long.

And if this isn't filmed in NZ... ouch. Shame for the movie and for the union.
