PERC unofficial "suggestion box"

Hello Protector People!

I am a representative of PERC, and since I'd like to give the people what they want. I am making this post the unofficial "suggestion box" for comments, thanks, complains, and event suggestions. I have had some people that really enjoyed the recent story contest on Triumph, and yes we know there were people that liked the Mr. & Ms. Costume Contest and those that did not like it. I just recently along with Dazz volunteered to help represent PERC on Protector.

I am not huge on good ideas when it comes to trying to host events my mind basically blanks out. I loved the forum story event, and I love costume contests. But what else would you all like to see from PERC?

Also would you all like to have the story contest here? I'll post up the poster from Triumph here so you all can look it over and give feedback. I've edited out the end date and server name so you can get the general idea of this contest if enough people like it I'll host it here.

Hey [Server Name], I want you to tell me a story!

This is a complete forum based event, but if you so desire you can give me a screenshot of the character you wish to tell me about.

Here are the objectives:

-Pick a character of yours.
-Write the beginning story of that character.
-USE YOUR IMAGINATION, no real life story of how you created them.
-You may not use any slang or internet lingo; unless you are using it in a conversation.
-No longer than 1500 words
-Punctuation and grammar count!
-You may write in any Point of View! (1st, 2nd, or 3rd.)
-Be creative, it can even be in journal entry form to look a bit more realistic!

Prizes:
1st place gets 100mil influence
2nd place gets 60mil influence
3rd place gets 40mil influence.

FAQS:
How to send in an entry?

Just post it on here. As well as a screenshot if you desire! Those wishing to submit a private entry may PM it to me.

How will it be judged?

Each Reader will read and score your entry using a basic story rubric. Then each judge’s total score will be totaled for the final score.

When they are due?

[End of Contest Date]

Well, I appreciate you stepping in to give us a hand. Thank you.

Yes, we would love to see the story contest here. I was very surprised and disappointed to find out that Protector - a server with a HUGE fan fic tradition - was left out of the story contest.

The main thing I would really like to see right now, however, would be for Ice Knight to apologize to Zek for his rude and insensitive comments.

I can not promise anything, I appologize for it, though it was not in my control.

I am hoping and planning to host the story contest on here to me having one person interested is good enough to make plans for hosting it very soon. I think I'll see if we can start it this Friday, how does that sound Sooner?

Normally I prefer to keep my writings to original universes, but I think I could give in and write some fan fiction for a shot at 100 mil inf.

My only suggestion would be to regularly bump event topics. I completely missed the recent costume contest (didn't even know it existed) simply because the topic wasn't bumped until after it was over.

That makes 2 interested in the story contest wow this is working faster than expected.
I was not aware of that, had I looked at the PERC rep list I likely would have started covering both Protector and Triumph. Then that thread would have been bumped a lot more. Suggestion taken and noted TwilightPhoenix.

So this is different from the Term story? o.o so much writing!

Please count me in though I'm spreading myself way too thin already lol.

I could probably slap a list together of the things I'd do or not do for PERC, however I think TP said it already in that regular bumping of contest and information threads is vital to ANY event anywhere. In the case that an event changes in any way, I'd love to KNOW it. Also, the forums have a public calendar. I went looking for the information in it, just before discovering that my note on what time it started was for the wrong time zone, and obviously didn't see it anywhere. It's the 2nd highest thing in the whole forums, y'know?

I'm not going to hold my breath on an apology, and it wasn't your doing or your fault TS, but thank you anyway. My life is pretty much a wreck just now, and I was really hoping that I'd be able to at least show off my skills at this year's event. I've placed reasonably high before, though I don't recall ever having a contest that early in the day before either.

Actually I did not even know MP was hosting that till she just told me about 8 hours ago. So I look the fool, so too Twilight and Sooner there is a story contest already on here, I did not know that until now.

As for the timeframe I don't remember in the past what times on what servers because I was on the contestant side of things prior to this year. I was not even in PERC last year for this event.

Hey Toxic,

I wanted to draw attention to something those of us who benefit from PERC's activities often forget:

You guys rarely get the recognition you deserve.

In fact, for volunteers who give away their time and resources, your efforts go largely unappreciated. Most people who haven't been in PERC will not understand how much of your available game time is devoted to designing activities, coordinating events, and reporting results - all the while keeping a stiff upper lip and acting as PR officials on whatever server you're involved with.

And all this after dealing with work, family, studies, etc.

You're very often criticized for not giving even more of yourself, and that's pretty much the only feedback you get out of all this, since there's no tangible benefits that I know of for volunteering in the first place.

My thanks go out to you, the other server reps, and Protector's own roster of former PERC reps. I may have left PERC since I found it did not mesh well with our server's mindset and became more of a hindrance for what I wanted to do personally, but I still recognize that you guys work hard to better our gaming experience.

Protector is fiercely independent, but it has some of the most knowledgeable and helpful folks it's been given me the privilege to know.

You'll find most of the "in house" event planners are quite successful already at planning, funding, and running their own activities here and that we actually require very little maintenance in that regard.

That doesn't mean we don't appreciate the extra help, and in fact perhaps you might want to consider ways to assist already ongoing server events. No other suggestions to offer (I keep those for my own events ), but again:

Thank you, and good luck.

Here's my suggestion: As an organizer, don't get bogged down in the skewed sense of entitlement you'll sometimes see on these boards. Of course be open to feedback, suggestions, etc. But everything basically boils down to this:

People are volunteering their time to run events. FOR FREE.
It's disappointing when things don't work out or there is a miscommunication. I could see being pissed if you paid for it. But nobody paid anything except the people standing around in Pocket D running the damn thing.

Ice hit the nail on the head--if you don't like how it ran, get involved and do some actual work yourself.

Also, remember that a small minority of the playerbase actually uses the forums for anything. You might want to consider more ingame promotion than updating the calendar that maybe half a dozen people look at with any regularity.

Thankyou Stalemate & FrozenDeath, I greatly appreciate the empathy. I'll say that you are correct, though myself unlike the other PERC reps spend very little time farming for funds for my events, or playing solely for the funding of PERC events. Seeing what little time I get on the game I typically just play to enjoy myself, the company of other players and just have fun. So typically I have to call to my other PERC reps for the prizes. Something I am begining to dread, but I don't really wish to sacrifice "everything" to just sit in game playing the market and farming either, talk about a rock and a hard place. My thanks go out to those that already do this.

I used to never look at the forums myself and only recently began to read them on a regular basis. But sometimes it is hard to endorse in game if do not play every day that peak time of day when everyone is on.

For event money, run tip missions for hero/villain merits. Have them set on an easy level (they're not hard to ghost). So you can get a merit every 2 days, spending maybe 30 min each day doing the missions. When you get a merit, cash it in for the 5 random rolls and then sell what you get. People are typically making 50-100mill on sales doing this.

Alternatively, earn merits for something that is selling well, like maybe a LotG +global rchg or a numina +end+reg (both cost 2 merits, so 4 days to get one). And then craft and sell it on the market.

I was one of the Protector PERC reps for awhile, so I do understand the amount of work and the frustration that goes into volunteering. Again, TS, I really appreciate you stepping in like this, especially in the middle of a bit of drama.

I have flaws like everyone else. I do my best to work with them, however at times they do come out. After doing other things and now that the weekend has been over for a few days, I went back to my post to look at it for a bit. I did come off like a jerk. Pretty insensitive to say the least. I am sorry that it caused issues and I sincerely apologize for my comments, specificity to Zekiran_Immortal and ShadowKitty.

While I can not justify my comments, I will say at the time of my post, I should of known better then to post at that time as my stress level as thru the roof due to no fault of the good people on Protector.

Though I tend to keep my comments to myself (as evident by my post count). I just wanted to note that I had been following that thread and saw the comments. I shared Sooner's opinion and have to say that I completely agree with T's statement above.

So...

+1 from me

Since you now have TWO reps looking out for you there should be absolutely no way that either Toxic or I forget to bump the event threads. Hopefully we will be fighting each other to bump stuff and remind you guys. YAY!!!

Has your server ever done a player auction before???

We did one on Champion and it was a HUGE success. In fact it funded our events for the entire year! It was really cool and had a great response!

Normally... what we do for the auction is get people to volunteer 4 hours of their time to play with the person who has the winning bid on them. We also can get Mod08 and Avatea to volunteer two hours of their time and they usually go for A LOT of money. I also know KJSR DJ's usually volunteer a show to let the winner choose the theme and a four song block. It's really cool! This might be a great way to raise money for PERC so Toxic, Myself, and future reps (hopefully???) do not eat out their own pockets. Lemme know what you think?

I like the idea of a Player Auction, I should remember this when trying to think of an event. Nice Dazz!

Yep. We did one awhile back.

...I still haven't gotten my prize...

Other than that it went really great.

First off let me say this TC, you shouldn't ever feel you need to apologize on behalf of PERC or any player run event. These events are only possible because of the time and effort that volunteers (such as yourself) donate to the player base as a whole. Participation is not required nor guaranted as with any player based event.

I do however think that PERC opens itself up for these types of attacks on a few fronts:

1) It seems as if most of the events being run are subjective rather then objective.

2) There are too few reps per server.

3) Change is good.

Suggestions:

1) I would strongly advise PERC to run less subjective contests. These types of contests only lead to claims of unfairness and being 'rigged'. Contests with clear winners would minimize these types of complaints.
A) Subjective contests: Costume contests; story contests; screen shot contests; etc.
B) Objective contests: Time trials; scavenger hunts; quiz show type of events; etc.

2) There should be every effort made to have 1 player from each server in PERC. Believe me I know the issues with trying to get people to donate time and run events, however, the reason this is important is illustrated in some of the complaints voiced with this most recent contest.
A) If you bring judges in from other servers to 'host' an event, the likely hood that they will be a member of some of the more populated global chat channels is minimal. Therefore, you may miss a good portion of the population who would attend an event (spur of the moment) if you only broadcast in /HC or /Arena.
B) Having a familiar face/name/avatar will lend credibility to an event. "Oh yeah I know that Frozen Death guy, he wouldn't cheat" as opposed to "Who the hell is this Masque guy, I bet he gives the prize to one of his buddies from his server".

3) Change- It might be time to switch up events, it seems as if the same few events keep being repeated. I know coming up with ideas is again a hard thing, however, give the people a voice and you might find some really creative ideas (think of AE... no not the farming, the actual stories that people came up with, some are much better then the current story arcs available to the player base).

Last thing, your donation of time and effort is appreciated. Without players such as yourself there wouldn't be events so keep up the good work, and stop apologizing, it isn't necessary.

Yep. For the economy present at the time, it was a HUGE amount of money.
