memory leaks when running 2 instances

my other account is sitt with maxinactivefps 5 has settings all the way turned down and i still run into memory leaks.
usually idles around 981 meg and shoots up to 1.55 gig quickly and rapidly climbing.

This is just one of the problems i have had running an alt account since i18.

Other problems are:
-Getting all power disabled on the account im playing and all set bonuses as well then i get knockbacked on a map without knockback then crash.
-Getting locked in the hover/gravity distortion animation unable to click powers breakfrees doesnt work and only escape from it is a raptor jet pack.

And this one, i wasnt aware you could have 34 members on your team:

WTF is going on?

I don't run two accounts often but I have done it since Issue 18 and have had no problems. I wonder if it's an issue with multiple instances running AE stuff. I've seen various wonky behavior from the AE missions.

I second this. I don't often run multiple instances, but this recent free-activation weekend I ran 4 at once for a heal farm without much issue.

I don't really use AE either other than running an occasional random arc, so I don't know how that would react either. Seems kinda weird.

This is not a memory leak. I don't think people know what a memory leak is.

Many people refer to any unwanted increase in memory usage as a memory leak. Even though this is not strictly accurate, it's still accepted usage.

Either way, I agree with you. People have complained about CoH having a memory leak for a long time. I've never found that to be true, but I know it's memory-hungry instead. It's a pack rat of information it doesn't really need. Chat logs, badge and contact info, information about people on your teams or around you...

It's entirely possible that the mission information in AE just collects and collects until it has a fit. Then again.. I don't see why 2 instances (in this case) would have anything to do with that behavior.

The above screenshot is depicting data corruption, as though the data somehow burst from its container and started "leaking" all over other regions of memory and producing garbage. (-:

A memory leak is simply where something is allocated but never freed, which results in available memory becoming less and less (leaking out) until eventually the computer runs out. The only screenshot you'd be able to show for a memory leak is that little balloon tip in the system tray saying that Windows is running low on virtual memory.

I did not say the screenshot was the memory leak did i?

And? The point is the corruption was causing massive amounts of memory to be used, causing the application to reach it's limitations and crash. Did you miss the part right after what you quoted where I said... I agree with you that CoH does not have a memory leak? I know what a memory leak is. I was simply saying that even though it's not a real memory leak, it's still accepted to refer to that extra memory usage as such.

You may not agree with that, but that's not the point of this thread... and if you really want to get strict about it, your own definition is slightly wrong. You are describing the exact scenario CoH is in. It allocates memory but never frees it.. so much to the point of crashing itself. The difference here is that CoH doesn't ever try to free it. A real memory leak is when the program loses the address of the memory for whatever reason and then CAN'T free the memory, causing what you later described as the operating system itself running out of resources... but as I said before, there are other acceptable usages of the term that you are neglecting.

To get back on track... To the OP:
I suggest making sure one full instance is fully loaded and even logged in before loading the second one. This may prevent some of the corruption you are seeing. Also make sure you don't close an instance while another one is still loading. I've run into problems while doing that a well. If you are regularly pushing the memory limits, it might help to reload a client every couple hours, just to keep the levels low. I even start to hit the limits on a single instance while running various standard content for several hours.

You could "verify files" to ensure your CoH directory is in order, but I suspect the files are fine and the error is happening when the information is in the memory... but it never hurts to do it anyway. It might be beneficial to run other system utilities like a virus scan, wiping temporary and unused files and programs, then defragging.

The other standard response is to ask for CoH_Helper and HiJackThis reports if it's still happening regularly.

If too much memory is being used, Windows will halt, and the game may crash as a consequence of being denied block allocation. The screenshot provided is clearly showing the wrong memory being read/written altogether, which must, by definition, be caused by something other than a memory leak.

Since this isn't happening until a second instance of the game is loaded, I'd put my money on either something in the way AE works, or a faulty RAM module.

You can call it a hot dog if you want. Communication works best when there is little or no ambiguity, and in something called a "technical issues" board, I'd say it's in everyone's best interests if technical terms are all formally defined.

The OP gave a description of the events and provided a screenshot. The precise technical terms are irrelevant since he also described the problem in plain English. Are you here to argue semantics or offer HELPFUL information?

Again, the screenshot was not the leak.

I had problem with "memory leak" while running CoH on XP. Memory increase for one instance was 12-16 KB/sec for another 8-12 KB/sec. It will run fine until it hits somewhere around 1.45 MB of memory usage, it will crash shortly thereafter. But it will be the same even running single instance though.

Here you go...

...but as mentioned, it is irrelevant at this point.

Some problems that have cropped up in recent issues related to memory growth:

* Do you have multiple monitors connected to your system? There were some difficult-to-diagnose memory consumption growth issues (possibly leaks, possibly not, hard to tell) connected to multiple-monitor setups a while back; I'm not sure they were ever all tracked down.

* Are you running ATI drivers prior to 10.4? Official word from CoH is that anything before 9.7 is a serious risk in the post-I17 world, and some people were having serious memory growth issues with 10.1 that upgrading to 10.4 fixed. In particular, IIRC one person had a problem similar to yours that upgrading from 10.1 to 10.4 fixed.

* Are you running any sort of keyboard-grabbing software? Viruses, malware, and the ATI Hotkey Poller are common problems here, along with voice chat.

* Are you running voice-chat programs? These frequently come with some sort of hotkey software that can be a problem in itself, and some people were having problems in addition to that.

Posting your CoH Helper output will give us some background info that can help narrow down problems.

As some have said here CoH likes to stockpile data you came across while you play, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is "/unloadgfx". It clears out all the old data from previous zones you've been in this play session etc. My laptop has 2gb of ram and I have a thing that monitors % used, unloadgfx drops it a good 10-15% usually, after awhile CoH will have to be logged out and re-logged to get the rest gone, but this increases my playability when i'm multitasking too much for coh's liking quite well .

(/unloadgfx will make your graphics go insane for a moment, it kinda erases everything on your screen and recompiles it, it's best to do it in a "quiet" area. If I do it in a crowded place or in the middle of an 8man team's fight sometimes the /unloadgfx will actually promptly crash me lol.)

10 50's To Date! Check out Titan Sentinel; it got my CoH presence synced online

Well, I run multiple accounts everday, and I have to say I don't have any real issues other than COH stock piling my memory and not releasing it.

Here is a image of my Task Manager...

I have 12gigs of ram, so no biggie for me, but I have seen it shoot up since I18, as it use to run around 800k max per instance and now its more than doubled.

Fresh Instances...

After about 2 hours of playing.....

So you can see how the game sucks up the ram, and doesn't release it. After I use Tweak Ram, I can free the ram up back to what the fresh instance looks like, or close to it.
