Elec/SD vs DM/SD

I'm wanting to roll a /SD scrapper and have decided on Elec or DM. Is the only difference really aoe vs single target damage? I heard from someone in game that Elec is the farmer build while DM is the single target boss or av killer. Is this pretty much true?

Having played and IO'd both builds to the gills, I can say that's pretty much correct. A top-end Elec/SD is a beast when it comes to AoE damage and a top-end DM/SD is a beast when it comes to single target DPS. In terms of every day practicality, Elec has the edge, but that hardly means DM is bad. We're comparing a hydrogen bomb to an atom bomb in terms of which one makes a better hand grenade.

I'd much rather have Dark/Shield due to its much higher survivability than Electric's massive AoE output but then again I am biased

If I were the team leader, and Demobot offered to join on either of his "IO'd to the gills" DM/SD or Elm/SD Scrappers - I would choose the Elm/SD.

For radio missions, I'd agree with you. For Task Forces, Dark is the better set. The AVs are the real threat, and Dark will down them faster than Elec will. Both sets have stupidly high potential for damage if you pump their recharge high enough, the difference is the attack you're clicking off as often as possible. Lightning Rod is a sick AoE, but you're going to get it off once per fight at most and Energy is the third most resisted damage type in the game, coming in VERY close behind Smashing and Lethal. Midnight Grasp is a sick tier 9 which is entirely negative energy, which means next to nothing is going to resist it.

What do you want to shake in fear when you approach, the Boss, or the 10 minions surrounding him?

Not to mention there's nothing worse for a shield user than to annihilate their own AAo fodder.

Thanks, rolled a DM/SD and he's already a blast! Got him to 10 in a couple of hours, Siphon Life has already saved my butt quite a few times.

Wouldn't a well built Elec/SD beable to have a solid (thought not the best) single target attack chain?

Not to mention, have more AOE, for the riff-raff you're most likely to see?

That said, the Dark Melee would have Drain Life for added survivability.

But back to that Electric Melee, you have all that Knockdown!

Basically...you can't go wrong with your choice!

I think Elm/SD is likely to be the more fun choice in playing however.

I just find that this isn't true at all.

The scrapper is never the only source of damage on any TF I run, or with the people I run with and I never bring a Scrapper along specifically for the AVs.

So when I have a choice, I choose the one that brings the most spawn wiping power to the team.

And that's Elm/SD.

As a side note, I'd choose FM/SD over the DM/SD as well.

My IO'd Elec/Shield does all the farming for me with the nasty AOE.. but my Io'd Fire/Shield is a beast when it comes to single target. He solo's AVs, Pylons, my Ele/Shield can't do that.. the single target damage just isn't enough.
