Storm/? For Solo

What would be the most effective secondary to pair with a Storm primary for purely solo play? PvE only, hopefully able to manage +1 x 8 or better, not interested in soloing AV's happy with Elite Bosses.

Well, if you wanted to do AVs you would probably be best off with /sonic for the stacking res debuffs, but going for +1x8 its aoe damage is less. Also, I suspect most sets could solo AVs since I can do it on my storm/psy.

Your best bets are probably /ice, since Ice Storm and Blizzard use blaster modifiers rather than defender values, or /dark since Dark Pit(aoe Stun), tenebrous tentacles/night fall makes a nice AoE attack chain with some decent control added in.

Although Archery should also be able to get a decent AoE attack chain going, you would have to wait until Rain of Arrows at 38 and you wouldn't get any additional damage mitigation from your secondary.

Although personally I like /psy, Psychic Scream and Psionic Tornado animate slower and have longer recharges than the AoE powers in other sets making it less than ideal for what you're looking for.

Besides what Draggynn mentioned, Dark Blast also has a self heal power.

I really enjoyed Storm/Ice for its heavy duty AoE firepower.

Thanks much all for your insights and advice. I played a Storm / DP to Lvl 10 yesterday out of curiuosity, and was underwhelmed. Think I'll go with Storm / Ice next as that fits the toon theme best.

DP isn't bad with empty clips, rain of bullets and the crashless nuke that recharges very quickly.

I think Draggynn pretty much covered some of the better synergies, so I will just add onto them here with my own thoughts.

Conceptually, I think Ice, Electric and Sonic all work well. As mentioned Ice brings good damage and more soft controls, as does sonic. Electric,,, eh not so much, but it looks pretty.

However one of the combinations that I am just itching to try is Storm/Dark. Having so many alts I just have not gotten around to it. What it brings: AoE immobilize to pair up with Freezing Rain, Multiple additional AoEs which should really mow down spawns, more layers to your survival with -tohit in each power AND, last but not least a self heal in a blast (Life Drain). The synergies here are just oozing. <---hmm maybe not the best choice of words.

The reasons I love Stormy.

Shade of Storms (Protector) is currently level 42, almost 43. I mostly play her with the same group of friends, so the leveling has slowed a bit. But when I first started her, she leveled really fast, with few trips to the hospital. And the self-heal/blast really made a difference in later levels. Now if I ever get around to slotting her efficiently and adding IOs... ;-)

In my experience it actually doesn't matter, and therefore sonic may be the way to go.

The way I play my stormy Lightning Storm, Tornado, and Voltaic Sentinel actually do a huge portion of her damage.

My guess is that Lightning Storm and Tornado on a Sonic debuffed target would do even more damage.

Also, I Highly recommend putting Achilles Heal procs in both Tornado and Freezing Rain.

What about Storm/Rad?

Any thoughts on that pairing? I'm trying one out right now and have found the synergy quite nice. Not a heck of a lot of damage, but, nice debuff on the rad with storm.

To be honest, /Rad doesn't bring a whole lot to Storm. As you note, Rad's damage tends to be on the lower side. Rad's debuff is -defense, which with Freezing Rain, Tornado, and the fact that everyone slots for accuracy, means that it really doesn't bring all that much to the table that Storm doesn't already have covered. There are very few situations in which the debuffs from the blast will be game changing since either you have enough debuff in Freezing Rain, or the enemy resists debuffs so strongly that the additional rad debuffs aren't going to make much difference. Although Atomic Blast can be fun, Storm usually suffers from the toggle dropping endurance crash.

At least that's my take on it

I agree with Dragynn.

Freezing Rain makes the -Def in Rad Blast redundant almost all of the time.

I went with Energy for massive knockback. Works pretty well solo, but you keep plenty busy. Dark or Ice would probably both be better, though.

My first level 50 is a Storm/Rad defender. I went for the bigger dose of -defense. My thinking on it was, even with the best tanks, I can hit targets that the freezing rain misses. I like cosmic burst a lot, and I stacked the stuns of that with thunderclap. I ran hurricane alot because I like the to-hit debuff, and passed on irradiate. I did take the nuke for the "Coda" to many stormy battle symphonies. The rad nuke has a very nice hold secondary effect while you position for power sink on survivors, if any. I think Rad is flashy.

Two points about my Storm/rad:

I made 'hay' on Creys because the -defense in tornado and the rad blast secondaries would chew through the god-mode powers of paragon protectors.

I remember a specific instance before supersidekick, but I had a fairly high sonic/sonic defenders on a medium sized team trying to take down the original version of Diabolique. We ground and ground and churned and churned to a stalemate. I replaced my sonic/sonic with my Storm/Rad defender. It was no walk in the park but steadily we wore that so and so down for a glorious victory.

Storm/Rad is workable. I am not saying it is superior to Storm/Ice or Storm/Sonic, but it's definitely workable.
