Just how do MM PvP?
I haven't had much experience with MMs in PvP. A MM would be great at area denial, but the way that PvP is formatted with no base raids, arena maps with no goal but racking up defeats, and the predominance of open zone hit-and-run, a MM just doesn't seem all that well suited for current PvP.
They sure are tough buggers though, as most PvP builds ignore their AOE attacks. And you can do some interesting things with Team Teleport. For what it's worth, keep three pets in Body Guard Mode and macro your three most powerful offensive pets to attack. Juggle between surreptitiously exiting body guard mode and having pets attack while quickly re-entering partial to full body guard as your MM gets attacked. If all you are doing is standing around in Body Guard mode, your pets will just not react fast enough to inflict damage. They must be proactive when you are not taking damage, and reactive when you are (Body Guard)
I would assume that a MM is better in arena duels than in open zone PvP.
I've tried MMs in PvP before and honestly haven't had much luck, especially after stuff like dimishing returns and other PvP power balancing shenanigans got implemented. MMs are better suited to smaller arena duels anymore, because open-area hit-and-runs or being teleported too far away from the pets (which can be, oddly, just around a corner or behind a wall not two feet away.) is too likely. Your best bet as an MM is to force your enemy to come to you after you've prepared the area with traps and the like (the Traps set in particular might just be handy) and have your commands easily available with the push of a button, because an AoE toggle debuff can be directed on yourself, and all of your pets would get affected unless you're intelligent enough to have them stay away and quick enough to keep them away from you. Any AoE powers at all can seriously derail your plans, as unless you have a high defense against them (force field, dark miasma) you AND your pets get hit, and any pets that are in bodyguard mode get hit for extra because they take some of the damage off of you. All of this, I've discovered through my many PvP defeats as an MM.
I haven't played a MM in PvP, but I have both seen and faced them.
I believe at one point the Dev's mentioned they thought MM's would fill the role of tanks redside in PvE, which isn't precisely how things evolved there.
I mention this because thats sort of how they are in PvP in a way.
With bodyguard mode active they won't go down quickly generally, and PvPers often don't bother with AE's( which are generally weaker in pvp anyway), which is the one thing MM's are vulnerable to. If you catch a MM not in Bodyguard or too far away from their henches their usually toast. What this means often their comparitively slow moving( since their not constantly jumping around), they have an excellent reason to have TP Foe. On the other side, they would be the first ones who would want a TP Protection IO if the dev's ever made one, since that is one tactic that works great with them.

Plus there are some set IOs that give TP Resistance.
Edit: I just recently came back, but a year or two ago, I routinely took my MM into some PvP zones and IIRC, I did pretty well.
Double Edit: And it was a Mercs/ MM at that.
MM's used to be pretty decent, heck even savage, in zones, back before TP-Foe recieved it's "un-affected" state. Now in zones, they really are only good for a "defensive" fall back.
They're sorta like a "mobile fortress." They can, albiet very slowly, move with the battle and keep a sort of "front line" for players on your team to fall back on and recieve buffs/support. So in all essence, they really are a mobile, slow moving, fortress, if built and played correctly that is. It's actually quite effective, especially if you have 3-4 good MM's working together to hold ground as the zone is gained, since they can spot heal and/or buff even "non" teammates as they fall back to them, plus they can even provide pretty solid damage support.
I've had MANY times in zone pvp where I've been "on the run" with a toon of mine and about to die, when I've spotted a clump of about 2-3 MM's and have had to dive right into the center of them for refuge. I recall one time in particular when I was on my Dominator that I was forced to do this while solo; SO first off, I recieved an instant BURST of buffs simply by diving into the middle of the pack thanks to all of their various "aoe" buffing powers. Next came heals and ally granted buffs when they noticed I had taken refuge amoungst them. Two of the Scrappers chasing me followed me into the pack carelessly, and lets just say, that between the MM's combined damage and debuffing, as well as my own....those Scrappers left via hospital trip, within about 10 seconds. The other great thing was, the rest of their teammates stayed at bay as well, after seeing this lol
Anyways, MM's aren't awesome in zone pvp, but they can/do provide a very helpful role. That role, however, can be tedious, and you'll want at least one to three other MM's on your team to truely carry it out effectively. MM's can definitely clean up in duels though, which is their strong point, imo. In fact, there are many people who simply will not fight an MM in a duel, because a good one can be just that invinceable.
Anyways, ymmv
Now imagine this-with i18, you can spot an MM, and dive in for refuse, only to find out they're on the other side.
Anyone had that happen yet?
Stacked mm´s can be hilarious in zones. You can have 3-4 mm´s and a villain team driving back 20 heroes back to their base.
Unsupported between npc´s and hero heavies its not much fun.
Ok so I quit somewhere around i5 and came back cause i heard there was.. PvP! I like pets, I like PvP! Sweet 1.2.3- KILL!
Or not.. Everyones got some kind of superspeedy power, even when TS'd they still move faster than pets Teleport foe makes people intangible Caltrops doesn't slow people down near enough for pets to start whackin away Web grenade SAYS 2.9second immobilze, more like .5 seconds-- and then they are immune for 15 seconds? Just how exactly do people even kill anyone in open PvP with MM? It seems like all anyone does is use builds that kill in 2 shots, then stealth/speed off if their attack succeeeds or fails. Is there any real viable option to PvP'ing with a MM? Granted I really like the bodyguard mode, but that means my stupid pets don't attack people as they come. I wish Attack/Defensive was still in BG mode =\ Anyways I rant cause i'm tired, CAN MM PvP seriously and get kills without people always runnin off? If so I'd love to hear =D |
As for help PvPing, can't help you there, I havn't really done so since Issue 15 or so.
